The problem of removing guns is that only criminals would have them, by default even having one would make you a criminal. So as a criminal, I know that I can kill, rape, or rob anyone that I know is an honest mark. Just knowing someone might have a gun in his coat, or in her purse can be enough to deter the softer criminals, removing that element would remove hesitation.

Again though the problem is that the criminals who do fear their own asses are the ones who wil go for 'soft targets'. They will target the people who look most unlikely to be carrying a gun. Now chances are the victim may or may not be carrying a gun regardless of how 'soft' the target is (a little old lady for example) but I don't buy that carryng a gun is a good deterent because a crim will make that judgment call based on outward appearance which can be totally deceptive.
