Volvos are already made in China but by another Chinese automaker. geely will take over these plants.SAIC only bought the Rover designs and IP, not the badge. They are made under the new badge, Roewe and they will also be made in UK later these year for the European market under the badge MG, which SAIC owns.

The S40 is currently also produced at the Changan plant in Chongqing. I guess SIAC wanted to wait till they have a mature product. There is no need to rush into foreign markets, since Chinese automakers can test their mettle in the giant domestic market competing against foreign brands. better to be assured you have a good product for export than to damage your reputation if the car is not ready, just look at the US witch hunt on Toyota.

The latest crash tests are very favorable. 4 stars for 1 geely model. Apaprently they want to improve upon the tests by using stronger steel. Chinese automakers learnt their lessons and reworked their car structures to beat the Euron-cap tests. Technically speaking, it's not that hard to modify the structures, and using better steel to score high ratings for Euroncap.
