Sometimes, a song and its singer are melded together into a combination that can't be beat. Though others sing this song well, no one in my opinion does it quite as well as Lyle.
@TheCindella2 You said it. I've never listened to this song just once, always at least twice. I like seeing the look on the face of someone who's never heard it when I put the record on. They always lean toward the speakers while I tilt my head back and close my eyes and smile. And when I say "Mind if we hear that again cause its just so damned good?" they just smile and say "Sure". God bless David Rodriguez for writing it and Lyle for doing it.
I first heard this song in 1982. It was recorded by a good friend of David Rodriguez'...Shake Russell. Shake did a great version too. David lived in and around Austin Tx, for many years and I got to know him when I lived there in the early 90s. He is a remarkable guy who helped me out when I was in a bad spot.....David is also an attorney. I sing this song when I play out.....I am awe inspired to hear Lyle do it. Wow....
This is a superb piece of writing from David Rodriquez. Lyle has brought so many underappreciated songs (and songwriters) to life with his vocals and instrumentation.
They are all favorites, but I do believe this is probably my #1 favorite by Lyle...with Church a really close second. Thanks so much for posting this!
Lyle Lovett's subtle and sublime outrageousness is like a magnet for me. He looks like a protrait of Elvis done by Modigliani, and is still so incredibly sexy. This song is gorgeous.
I could listen to Lyle sing the phonebook. Throw in a great song and he'll knock it out of the park. He's got a long list of songs but, this has gotta be my favorite.
Peter Mathiesen wrote a book about finding himself on a search for snow leapords in the Himalayas. Snow leopards like white whales are metephors for the truth.
The absolute best version of this song was recorded by shake russel, houston, TX in the early 80s. Unfortunately it's only available on vinyl, on the Comin Home album...
I used to listen to Shake Russel & Dana Cooper at Grins in College Station back then. Little did I know then how great the magic was that they made with their music & lyrics. I only know that it still inspires me & I do not have a copy of any of their early music magic from the old times...
As enamored with Lyle's version as I am, I'd really like to hear Shake's version.
The show was the fantastic "Sessions At West 54th Street". Recorded at the Sony Studios New York City. This show was recorded in 1998 and first aired in America on December 18 1998.
I've always liked this song. What's wrong with that. Sometimes I just like to listen to the music and not really think too heavily about it. Can't that be part of it too?
just a footnote, David Rodriguez is a Texas lawyer who lives in Amsterdam,NL. An amazing person and a really nice guy.Beautiful song and Lyle Lovett's version of his song truly does it justice. Thank you.
Thanks for taking the time to comment. Just a reminder that this gorgeous song was written by David Rodgriguez. More relevant details available in the "About This Video" section on this page.
iokay, glad to be educated. I remember hearing this song on a Sunday radio show called Over Easy out of the Indianapolis area. The DJ/host of the show explains the notes on album covers much the same as you note in this case in the "more about this video" . In my haste I failed to read thoroughly. Thank goodness for all the hands behind the songs that stir our souls.

"As rivers run dry and the mountains blow away" is probably the most haunting lyric I can recall. Humbling and perhaps a bit depressing.

Even though Lyle didn't write this one, his poetical, lyrically powerhouse interpretation makes me wish the song would never end.......
