Lets talk guys about Claptons equipment. Here he plays brownie ( he used Les Paul for whole DatD England tour) witch should be 1956 strat ( somewhere is written 1957 ) through fender twin amp ( his Album amp was Fender champ amp, but 5w isnt certainly enough in Fillmore :D ). I´ve read he used here wah wah ( dont know brand ) and fuzz , even if theyre tourned off, they produce very nice sound ( true bypass in 60 ^^ ).
@hotmn4u I firmly disagree. Hendrix, is just more excentric than clap... Because I don´t like his experiments, i can proudly say, that Hendrixs best song is red house and little wing:-) And Page however great in Celtic tunes (Kashmir ) doesn´t Touch in late 60s Hendrix, Clapton, Allman... my opinion, word good means good in subjective meaning. :-)
4:32... "Let me tell you all about her..." And then there is that BOMBARDMENT of sheer pain and genuine heartfelt emotion. Thank you Mr. Clapton, thank you.
Eric would be appalled at being called a god. He is awesome, and Lord knows I love to hear him play. But, he is just a man with a whole lot of soul. God bless him!
He actually has stated that he disapproves of his "God" nickname. He's very religious, and doesn't like this title. But who cares, he'll always be God to me, as well as Slow Hand and E.C.
I love the chater of you guitar geeks. Me thinks it sounds like a Gibson, or maybe it's a peddle effect. Saw him play in houston in 70 with this band. I was 14 Blew me away.
This is one of my all time favorite tracks. I play along with it several times a week echoing the riffs just to get the transmission from the Master :)
Clapton's is using a fender and has is wah wah cocked or at least he kicked it on he doesnt use it but still you can hear it clearly around 7:00
i bet it's the same wah wah he used in cream...in the interview he says "i;ve got to kick this to start it" and i have dozens of D&D bootlegs where i here him kick it
Funny, that if this was someone out on the street.. some unheard of individual playing this guitar work, most likely lots would say it sucked. But, it's Clapton so, it's really great, right?
I love EC.. and think he's a fine player.... but, I am also able to separate myself from all of that and listen to people seem as though they're worshiping God or whatever. Kind of amusing in a sick sorta way.. haha!
@margovallen No, I don't think anyone would say it sucked except for people like who continue to diminish Clapton's talent. I am getting so sick of people putting him down. If you don't like it, fine, that's your prerogative, but you don't have to put him down.
@Kaalec I don't diminish EC''s talent.. I think he's great and I am a big EC fan. And I'm also a REALIST. So,m what kind of fan or friend or critic or anything else, would I be if he did something that was less than pleasing.. just look the other way and sing his praises louder than ever? I think not.
I am nobody special in the music world.. and if I played certain things as EC.. some of his less than good solos, I'd get the boot.. but, because EC did it... it's all good.
But someone could say the same thing about Hendrix. That on occasion he could play very sloppy and lack any sort of melody in his solos just for the sake of making loud and distorted noise. And most everyone would call it GENIUS!
@margovallen@iagobroxado yeah I get what you mean! But I wouldn't risk the 335, only because I've never seen photographic evidence of it in use during the D&D era. We have Brownie, a LP Special and a LP Custom. Definitely the tone is kinda "hollow", this clear, low-output humbucker tone... I've come to think it may be the Custom thru some black-silverface Fender amp with his wah set still to emphazise the highs. Cheers!
The tone here is definitely a fender tone... I must say it's one of my least favourite EC tones (The Brownie), listen to a 90's version of this song where he plays 335, it sounds much better.
@WDoAM I'm so confused! :D Definitely there's more of a single-coil tone to it, though it's not a classic Strat tone I'd say (the "quack" thing..)... anyway, sounds a bit different depending on the computer-speakers-headphones I'm using, you know? :) Definitely he has a wah pedal set still to get that screaming tone.
@iagobroxado@WDoAM Not one of my favorites here also - But I wanted to say that I love the Derek & Dominos studio album tone (and that's Brownie there). I don't like his Lace Sensors - Noiseless tone either. I really dig his "Just One Night" tone (Blackie) - really pure, uncompressed, you can hear every note in detail, and you can identify it as a Strat right away. I'll definitely take a listen to "Have you Ever..." with the 335.
@freeformjazz7213 and thats why i love it so much...everytime he sings a line, sounds like he's on the verge of crying. just listen. most times, people sing on 'soul'. he's singing out of total desperation. wow!
@freeformjazz7213 yes are completely correct. also, understand that she decided that she chose to stay with G. Harrison over Clapton, and this buried him. he was burning with a fire called desire...and desperation...and thats why this stands on its own. he was 27 and completely lost playing for HER. not the crowd, the fame, not for himself. and thats totally RARE. my opinion he was in his prime...and i'm grateful.
Clapton ---people come and they go away--he never leaves-for the music is sometimes really good ------and this is really good,,poor George and his family
The emotion, touch, tension, phrasing, architecture and voice-like quality of his playing here simply transcends guitar playing and enters the realm of pure artistry. This track should remind all aspiring blues guitarists, and that includes the more recent 'heroes', that it's not WHAT but HOW, WHEN and WHY.............
@bluefen The phrasing, perfect sense of timing & channeled emotion is what sets Clapton apart from the rest. No one plays electric blues better. He was only 25 years old here!
@margovallen I agree. With the live Dominos he usually had a '54 Les Paul Custom w/ P 90's on the side. (same one w/ Delaney & Bonnie) I also have seen photos of him w/the Dominos playing a white Les Paul TV single cut w/ P 90's. I would love to solve this mystery once and for all.
@rvz77 Well, I always thought he used the 2-tone 1957 strat per the Layla album.. during his Derek and the Domino days. Just thinking is sounds a little different than a strat in some places on this particular recording.
@margovallen He used the 2-tone 57 strat on the Layla album, and the tour after the album... I'd say for a year or 2. Then the band broke up recording the 2nd album, and Clapton went into hiatus for 2-3 years. when he resurfaced, he started using 'blackie' which were a bunch of different parts from other guitars to truly make it 'his own'. then the 2-tone 57 strat from Layla days became his backup...sound comes from the amps, wah pedal...but that 2-tone is incredibly unique in its own right :)
This is a Strat.....it's also some of the finest playing I've heard from Clapton since his days with Mayall....it's rare you hear him play with such intensity now.
@evanguy If you listen to Let it Rain or Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad from the show, you hear Brownie for sure. That cleaner out of phase sound of the 56 with the pickups between the bridge and middle. This has the same grind and tone as Bottle of Red Wine. Not Fender. He used Brownie and Gibsons together w/ D&D at live shows. (1954 Les Paul, Les Paul TV and 3 pickup Firebird) I have D&D live pics with Brownie and a Les Paul 54 (w/ single coils)at the same show.
Mos Def a strat, no doubt about it. Eric had Brownie strung up a bit thicker, so blaring through live speakers its gonna sound thicker. But it's a strat.
Gawd, it's been years since I've heard this version! I still have every note seared in my brain. I've heard it 1000 times since I was first introduced to Clapton music in college 1972. This one song, this particular version, touches my soul like no other song in the world. Live sreamin'-like-a-jilted-woman slow blues leads from the Master. No one conveys the pain of the blues like Clapton. Some are faster, some are cleaner, no one is better.
Wonderful - Eric singing and playing like he means it (which he probably did as Pattie was still elsewhere). Sure Mr Whitlock sounds like he's playing a bad church hall piano, and there's a bum note in the solo (I'm sure he meant to bend it higher!) but this is so good
Duane earned his spot for blues work 40 years ago. Guy was a natural. He started something with electric slide. But he played actively maybe 10 years. Derek has played almost twice as long already-- tens of thousands of hours more than Duane, thousands more gigs. And still growing. His musical vocabulary is huge. He's had so many more influences since 1970 when Duane died to draw from. I've seen him play many times, practically standing next to him. He's the real deal.
Derek Trucks has far better slide intonation than Allman. Listen to some of the tracks on the Layla album such as "I Am Yours" or even "Layla"....atrocious intonation problems. I've never heard Trucks ever play out of tune, even in the most difficult of slides.
The whole point of great music is to enjoy it as it's playing. Both my favorite song and favorite player of all times is the one I'm listening to at the time. They are all great. As are a number of local players I know who aren't famous.
sloppy? nonsense, it's not about technique or tightness - Derek trucks playing has made me weep before - Music is not a competition, the idea of a number 1 guitarist of all time is ridiculous. Hendrix was crap at fingerpicking....
yes i agree mav..i saw eric at his peak and ok the big h probably knocked him back,,but not many people have even heard of trucks,i saw him twice,,very good but he cant cut the inovation and passion coming from duane and erics play at there peak..
Duane was overlooked? Huh? Duane died nearly 40 years ago as a babe at 24. He did some brilliant stuff, but he would have gone on to do tons more. He didn't get the chance. We've had an avalanche of major players since Duane, from Eric Johnson to SRV. Derek Trucks has now been playing slide longer than Duane, is older than Duane ever got to be, and has pushed elec slide into areas Duane never touched (Coltrane tunes).
Yeah, I totally agree.., love the album but I've always missed Eric playing a Les Paul or an SG... for that and my favorite album of all time it's Live Cream Volume II
I heard the original recording when i was about 16 years old, I was simply astonished at how much passion and raw emotion came through his guitar, it made me cry....awesome power of the blues.
I think that Clapton is really interesting. I really cherish what I've heard from his 60s and 70s material. But I just can't stand it when he's playing reggae or "Knocking on heaven's door"
Really I don't understand this guitar playing, this kind of blues it bores me to death. I like the rest of the songs by derek and the dominos but not this. It's the same with BB King... people talk about feeling but it just makes me insensitive
The only other git player I like over EC is Hendrix but this old stuff of his is out there by that I mean it's good. I think at this time in his life he was going thru some changes, that made for some good blues which we all know nothing beats good blues....
no one has this guys touch, i play don't come close after 44 years! priceless....your ears are the best judge, n this is a direct link with erics' soul. The whole album should be in your collection.....especially if you play!
I have played the double-lp Layla album 100's of times, and never get tired of it: Allman & Clapton at the top of their form in my opinion, Jim Gordon's is such an UN-boring drummer, the vocals are astonishing, I LOVE the way Eric sings. I love this live D&D tune here, too bad Duan's not on it, but not THAT too bad.
I'm not sure how to upload that song, however if you want it you can find it on lime wire. They have most of that musictheir. Thatis such a great alblum. Well I hope that helps.
Well I paid for it in 1971 and think I did my part then. I'll only grab something off limewire if my copy is not at a recording quality. I believe strongly that musicians deserve money for they're work.
Oh this is great...when Ec was all fucked up! Excuse my french...just i know he's feeling very raw. Im hoping to upload the version from Albbert Hall where Buddy Guy plays with along with R Cray. You should see Buddy's face when Ec gets into it! Anyway thanks for posting and im sure all will agree there aint enough songs like this one of Youtube. Peace and Love all.

kinggreenbaum1966 2 years ago 3
Yeah, I totally agree.., love the album but I've always missed Eric playing a Les Paul or an SG... for that and my favorite album of all time it's Live Cream Volume II

Was this with the ES-335?
willwelsh816 2 years ago
No, it was on his Stratocaster "Brownie," which he also used on the Layla album and from 1973 to 1985 was Blackie's backup.

assuming the title to this song isn't rhetorical, my answer is yes.
ENDOtactical 2 years ago 3
It is rhetorical. The singer is referring to himself and his own situation.
Have you ever loved a woman so much you tremble in pain?
And all the time you know she bears another man's name.
Have you ever loved a woman so much it's a shame and a sin?
And all the time you know she belongs to your very best friend.
Have you ever loved a woman and you know you can't leave her alone?
Something deep inside of you won't let you wreck your very best friend's home.

That's cause he makes the guitar sing like a human. Cause he's God.

I heard the original recording when i was about 16 years old, I was simply astonished at how much passion and raw emotion came through his guitar, it made me cry....awesome power of the blues.
bluesdog88 2 years ago 5
I think that Clapton is really interesting. I really cherish what I've heard from his 60s and 70s material. But I just can't stand it when he's playing reggae or "Knocking on heaven's door"
He should be playing blues, period
MemphisBlueAgain 2 years ago 4
His guitar's as raw as his voice - it hurts, hurts good to show how much pain your in to so many people standing watching.
Listen now. All the wounds are scabed over, only on the odd occasion to be picked at and get some idea of what it used to feel like.
He was never better than this.

Really I don't understand this guitar playing, this kind of blues it bores me to death. I like the rest of the songs by derek and the dominos but not this. It's the same with BB King... people talk about feeling but it just makes me insensitive

You are right, this soulfull bittersweetness is absolute amazing and unique. In my opinion, today, Warren Haynes comes quiet clos to them.
jprarch 3 years ago
This is beautiful. His emotive guitar playing speaks to my soul.
tomseviltwinky 3 years ago 3
The only other git player I like over EC is Hendrix but this old stuff of his is out there by that I mean it's good. I think at this time in his life he was going thru some changes, that made for some good blues which we all know nothing beats good blues....
shaserv 3 years ago
no one has this guys touch, i play don't come close after 44 years! priceless....your ears are the best judge, n this is a direct link with erics' soul. The whole album should be in your collection.....especially if you play!
rhythm and lead...take note....unbeatable

clapton and duane are such an amazing combination. one of the best sets of guitarists along with yardbirds, allman bros, and skynard.

I have played the double-lp Layla album 100's of times, and never get tired of it: Allman & Clapton at the top of their form in my opinion, Jim Gordon's is such an UN-boring drummer, the vocals are astonishing, I LOVE the way Eric sings. I love this live D&D tune here, too bad Duan's not on it, but not THAT too bad.

its on the same album. I just cant find it
rhoadsnhalen 3 years ago
I'm not sure how to upload that song, however if you want it you can find it on lime wire. They have most of that musictheir. Thatis such a great alblum. Well I hope that helps.
Donincal 3 years ago
Or you could keep Eric alive and well by paying for the album-WHAT A CONCEPT!
pcfxer 3 years ago 3
Well I paid for it in 1971 and think I did my part then. I'll only grab something off limewire if my copy is not at a recording quality. I believe strongly that musicians deserve money for they're work.

im sure eric still needs the cash your right ..

If you look you'll find it here. Someone uploaded it I think in January.

Thanks for posting this. I have never heard this version.
Clapton's cover of this song on 'Layla and other Assorted Love Songs' was/is the reason for my love and appreciation of the guitar.
fretsalot66 3 years ago
You can easily buy this double CD. Eric's tone, playing, ect...
throughout the whole album is so laid back n bluesy.
His wah pedal skills are on display on a few very long jams.
I have had this performance on every format album, cd, ect...
All the tempos are sooo groovy too! Lot's of dope through out.

This is so good it makes me want to quit playing, yet inspires me to keep going at the same time.
