I drove from Las Vegas with friends to go watch the race. I was too cool!! The roads were all closed only to riders. We got to ride three laps of the course the day before the race. What a feeling that was. We had people running next to us, while we climbed the hills. For a moment, we all felt like champions of the road! I will never forget that! Thanks for posting the video!
great day for SoCal cycling, I was there with my teamates, rode down from Long Beach.
Alexi was not a doper, and neither were the track team.
In '84 blood boosting (blood doping) was not illegal, there are no drugs involved, it is your own blood removed 2 months prior, then put back in before the race.
Watching this video summons a flood of memories...
In the summer of 1984, I was a gangly Texas teenager who loved cycling, and I watched this race live, along with my older brother, & some cousins visiting from California.
I was ecstatic over Grewal's victory, and was jumping all around the TV that afternoon!
And, not willing to miss watching the race live that day, I called in sick to my job at McDonalds, and damn glad I did!
Thanks much for posting this historic race, in US Cycling!
The US men's rad team did not dope. Numerous articles on that, including details on who did.
What Grewal did was ride against his teammate (Phinney) by his own admission, and sit on Bauer's wheel at the right time. It wasn't pretty, or sporting, but it was the way to win.
I concur. The US roadies did not dope, unlike their track brethren.
Grewal rode a superb race, even if he overshadowed Phinney. He saw the opportunity, took it, and ran with it. He won the Gold fairly, and rode with all that he had.
The whiners can second-guess this race all damn day, but the 1984 Cycling Road Race and the Gold Medal belonged to Alexi Grewal, hands down.
A brilliant race and victory, for US Cycling at the LA Games!
Grewal only won that race because of that large water drop hovering over him in the last few miles - cooled him off enough to recouperate and take the victory ...
In an article recently Grewal stated that the only rider he's ever known not to have "crossed the line" with doping was Bauer. We know who the real winner was that day.
And...career wise, I would pick Bauer's career any day...or Lauritzen's for that matter....

If it wasn't for dope, it would have been Bauer winning GOLD, and yes I am American, but a anti-cheater first.

I guess Bauer was the best non-doper in 1984. Touchy Canadians!

Call him a cheat, but he did not blood dope in the '84 Olympics, unlike others on the team.
