First off, Fear and Loathing was written in 71 and is a lament for the lost ideals of the sixties. It was also a precursor to the paranioa that would overtake America after Watergate. Now what it has to do with On the Road, got me. Great Gatsby is about the twenties. American today is an amalgamation of everything that proceeded it. The past is always an influence on the present, the way the music of the sixties is still relevant today, even more so then back then. America loves its nostalgia.
Honestly, I thought this was one of the worst interpretations of On the road I have ever seen. It's almost although this director doesn't understand the motive and underlying truths behind the beat movement. Kerouac's vision in this novel is not at all represented by this film, and to me it just seems like a cheap perversion of the actual thing.
nice production values. i don't know about that Dean Moriarty...If this thing ever gets made for real i'd like to see someone like Robert Downey Jr. as D.M. even if he is 10 years too late. they need someone with the energy and personality to do the man right.
i larffed my arse off! the funniest send-up of OTR imaginable
from the big caddy to dean moriarity as a swarthy, double-chinned lothario. bahaa khaddaj as edie parker! (and camera) frank booze as director. and after the credits, 'hey cunt.' OTR as pulp pizzazz.
That's near enough for me boys, go ahead and make the movie! Congratulations to all concerned, film makers, actors, music choice, writers. The man's had the brakes on this one for too long.

This kind of music isn't suitable for On the Road! The books soundtrack was jazz and so should the movies be!

On the Road is a template.
Fear and Loathing is about the 70's.
On the Road takes place in the 40's.
Both Americas are gone.
