First time I watched the movie, this scene gave me the chills. I'd read about Flight 19. All the planes have disappeared, and then, decades later, they show up in Mexico, with no crew, in perfect working order...brrrr. Eerie.
They got lost ran out of fuel and ditched in the Atlantic while thinking they were in the Gulf. They are in the wrong paint for flight 19 but it was a cool scene
@Pyrosity That's very true. If Lt. Taylor had simply switched his radio frequency to 3000 kilocycles (the emergency frequency) like the tower operators told him to, they'd have gotten the radio fixes on their position much earlier, and would probably have been able to get the flight home safely. Taylor and his flight, like you said, just milled around out there in approaching darkness and worsening weather until they ran out of gas and ditched in 15-foot seas.
@Pyrosity recently declassified the last thing they reported was that all their instruments were going haywire and they saw something bright ahead... it was on a documentary on history channel... last words were god be with us...
Hee hee hee! On the TRUE 'theatrical version', we can hear the guys yelling MUCH better when we first see the aircraft.
They're yelling about the planes being "General Motors"--an obvious corporate product placement in 1977, since these planes were made by Grumman.
Note how in this modern re-release, the voices have obviously been buried by the soundtrack music and wind sound effects, so as to hide the mention of the GM brand.
I waited in line for over 3-hours in the rain 31-years ago to see this movie at the Ziegfeld in Manhattan. It was worth the wait! The attitude of the government and the military in this film is exactly how they act and do in real life, when dealing with the vast uninformed public, who experience UFOs, and their crews from the vast beyond.
Like yesterday. It was right before my 16th Birthday, I was a young man, a young researcher and scholar. President Obama is 2 months younger than I am, and I look younger than he does! I remember the 1964 New York Worlds Fair, and I remember when Martin and Bobby were assassinated in 1968.
That's a lot of trips around the sun. I'm ony 48, nearly 49.
We must take better care of the planet we ride around on.
Keep watching the skies. And under the waters! I wated in the rain for over 2 hours in Novermber 1977 to see this film at the Ziegfeld in Manhattan, in 70mm and Dolby Stereo. Steve Spielbergs second blockbuster.
Now AVATAR has become the biggest movie of all time!
I have the DVD speciall editions of this wonderful moviie.

Yeah too bad the number's of the planes dont match the real planes.I like when they start them up after 32 year's of being nowhere.

@ebillyboi Flight 19 is well documented if you'd actually read about it. They got lost and ran out of fuel, ditching their planes in the sea.
