Murcer was supposed to be "the next Mickey Mantle". He never quite lived up to that, but had some very good seasons with the Yankees. Just before the Yankees' started winning pennants again in the mid-late 70's, he was traded to the Giants for Bobby Bonds (Barry's father). He returned to the Yankees in 1980 and after he retired became a beloved member of their broadcast team.
@MegaObserver1: Actually, he returned to the Yankees during the 1979 season. Remember that amazing game that he basically won single handed against the Orioles the day Thurman Munson was buried. I went to the stadium a month later and saw him hit 2 homeruns in a game.
Great person. Shame that Bobby never had that great career that everyone expected. I remember when he was a S.F. Giant- He hated playing in Candlestick so much that he considered retiring from the game after his stint with the Giants.
Reggie Jackson said it best when he commented that if there was a Hall of Fame for people, Bobby Murcer would be it's first inductee. Murcer was a great player in his prime and his enduring popularity amongst fans is not only a testament to his playing abilities but also his great qualities as a human being. My only regret as a fan of his is not being able to have met him.
Right on both counts. The only real shame of the Yanks return to glory in 1976 was that Bobby was not on the team anymore, but at least he got to play for a winner in 1980 and 1981. He, along with Roy White, Stottylmyre and Munson gave the Yanks some real hope during the lean years of the late 60's and early 70's.
A GREAT YANKEE and he had very neat handwriting!!

@cucumberinmypants Bobby Murcer would only suck Thurman Munsons cock after he was done buttphucking George Steinbrenner.
