Stupidity....when will the mass production of stupid people cease?
Everyone's minding they're own business when this guy is driving the opposite direction they are...Had to deal with a couple of people on my permit just like this a couple of months ago...rather terrifing.
I think all learner drivers should be made ride a moped for a month, most car drivers suffer from lack of concentration and are unable to read the road. If you are a biker you bloody well learn that skill quick !
Consider this: If a group rides in single file, they still have to leave the same 2 second gap between bikes, so a group of 6 would take up the same space as a staggered group of 12. That would actually make it harder to overtake, and would not be the best option in an urban center.
Riding side by side is not safe, police do it, but they are very highly trained.
Staggered formation solves both these issues, and keeps the group nice and compact.
Here in the states, the lazy cops wouldn't have lifted a finger for this. All they care about is handing out tickets, a form of taxation. But run over two bikers stopped at a light, while you're high on meth, and you get a simple traffic violation. Dunno whose side these clowns are on. Good to see some cops somewhere working for the citizen.
To be honest, the rider saw the imminent crash and if it had been me riding I would have done a much much better job of getting over out the way, its no go saying from the grave " it was the cars fault "

Thanks for your efforts in nabbing this clown. Can you tell us anything about the software you used to clean up the image, and how clean it turned out? It's been bugging me for ages. I had a bit of zoom on the camera which exaggerated the wobble...
Sorry....can't. I can tell you that it was done at the Vic Police Forensic Science Centre but I didn't ask what software they were using BUT, I did get still images of all vehicles except for the oncoming 4x4, so it is pretty good. Mark 1 up for the good guys!!!
@953kel then why don't you explain to the bikers that their spacing/positioning in that situation invites this sort of behavior with this end result or is overtaking banned in your country?
@char19822 thats actually a pretty standard formation, as far as I know it's recommended just about everywhere.
It is the safest formation for group riding for many reasons, one being it discourages drivers from cutting into the group.
In this formation, riders can stay tighter together, The rider directly in front can be kept 2 seconds ahead to allow ample stopping distance, while the rider diagonally in front is only 1 second ahead, thus discouraging cars from cutting in.
@psteverific yes, it discourages most from cutting in, except for a hardcore of drivers that see this sort of formation as a deliberate attempt to restrict overtaking (which it is) and on roads with restricted overtaking opportunities, leads to some outrageous overtaking maneuvers which have a habit of ending one way for the bikers, particularly if the bikers are so passive aggressive as to not let people in like here.

@psteverific I know that in most countries they do not have a pro bike agenda, they enshrine the rights of people who drive/ride in a manner that makes it more difficult to overtake like not discouraging people who do not want to overtake from following too closely and then closing the gap in an effort to prevent people 'pushing in'. This doesn't really discourage the most aggressive individuals and just leads to some of the worst accidents from what I have seen on the road.

There are tailgating laws, but they're virtually unenforcable. And I hate it when I see someone 'close the gap' to stop someone from overtaking... it's just petty!

Glad they got him. I'm always sceptical of the image enhancing thing you see on shows like CSI b/c it's portrayed so badly but I guess it actually can be effective.
car drivers dont overtake as much as bikes, in turn they're generally shit at it. dont learn to experience and think about the dangers. such as blind spots made by car infront.
It's also that they generally don't have nearly enough power to get past quickly, nor are they small enough to get away with it when things do get a little too close.
The first problem was he overtook behind a car that was already overtaking.. He did not know what was in front of that car.. He obviously did not care either.
He should have waited his turn and for some vision if he had to do it at all.

If I was riding With these guys and seen this happen. I would have caught up 2 them and Boot fucked a couple of mirrors off. I just thought about the glass that would spill onto the highway and into the path of the other bikers...hummm maby not such a good idea but certainly would have been fun! I'll have to resort to the phat ball bearings in my pocket. A wind screen will not put so much glass on the highway and be so much more expensive.
