  • am i the only one that thinks this looks a little like a "poor mans" sebenza? as far as blade shape, and overall color scheme.

  • the flipper design is not an extended portion of the tang. it is a separate piece of metal that runs in a track cut into the liners. very cool but collects pocket lint.

  • my mora knife fixed blade plus sheath plus paracord is 3.25 ounces with a good four inch carbon blade, price 10$ and it comes scary sharp.

  • The fact that it's used in surgical instruments (which may or may not be true) would be a detrament to the steel. Because surgical instruments are meant to be very sharp, but they're not durable at all because they're used once and thrown away.

  • Hey Nut'n, if you like this knife you should check out the Ken Onion Ripple by CRKT. You will love it!

  • I just like the color and the traction of Kershaw.

  • any plan to update the video? I think after the review of OD-2 nut can revise this video (annotation is just fine..I guess), it's an old knife but if he plan to keep this vid around I think he need to revise the flipper mechanism and such..

  • @Kylef7725 I already got the Flash I.

  • is it assisted in anyway as I would love to buy one.

  • Hey nutn, would you suggest this knife, the SOG Flash I , or the SOG Twitch ii?

  • @bulldogsfan5953 What is your use?

  • @StinkyCheese9999

and I didn't even mention the nagging issue that skeletonizing knives is only good for those that never use a knife, posers who feel good about having one on them. People who actually USE knives don't want the nooks and crannies building up crap in them, then don't want a special tool just to clean their knife since a paper towel, rag or toothbrush will not clean gunk out of skeletonized crevaces. It just RUINS a knife to make it so that it gets clogged up with gunk.

  • NO! Lighter is not better. It's a mere 2.2oz, it would be insanity to make it weaker by getting rid of what is a structural support!

You are spreading urban myths. No sane person cares about shaving off fractions of an ounce when it comes to structural support. Healthy grown men (typical EDC knife owners) weigh about 200 lbs give or take, if a fraction of an ounce matters you are doing it wrong.

  • @StinkyCheese9999

Don't get me wrong, I like your reviews but on this one point I totally disagree. Not just that, but every ounce MORE the handle weighs to make it more balanced against the blade weight is a good thing. My experience using knives is extensive - boy scout, military, park ranger, outdoor lover.

If 1/4th an oz matters, lift weights or something, oh but then your arm weighs an ounce more. OH NOES. Something should weigh what it does to perform the best it can for what it is.

  • kershaw please make a mini rake, I love my Rake and it would be awesome to have a mini, love the full belly of it.

  • Thats one of the best flipper mechs out there. Open the knife up and you'll see what makes it different. Lee Williams knows his stuff, his custom knives are really sweet and he did a great job on this collab

  • DESIGNED by the wizard of Oz ..........BWA ha ha ha ha lololol!.

  • thats not an extended tang on the blade btw. its a completely different part of the knife

  • way to expencive, + for tha monny there are scharper strudyer niceves

  • ha dont feel bad im just as anal about my blade lockup also

  • hey man, you should remake this vid. a lot of the info is off (like the name).

    keep makin' great vids.

    with respect, Nameless

  • dont like bad lock-ups? what about the sog flashs?

  • @ChAnDoN864430 Amen! I went to test one out and there was play everywhere. So, needless to say, if Nutn recommends it I have to go find it and test it. I can't buy it on the spot off his word. I guess we don't see eye to eye on quality.

  • @ChAnDoN864430 he has admitted there is play in the lock up of flashes. he tells you that he tightens the screw to make it a more secure lock up. i wouldn't really know myself, i'm not much of a sog guy.

  • I don't know if it's mentioned before but they've now have black textured g10 sides only, no trac tec

  • Wish Kershaw would have coated the pocket clip in black. People dont need to know you're carrying a knife IMO. Does anyone know a good product to paint it?

  • @narcolepsysmile Nutn showed a demo video in which he used a substance called "Duracoat", he uses it for most if not all of his paintjobs on weapons as far as I know. The demo video was in the Rat 1 Duracoat project.

    Hope that helps.

  • The Burger "Exkelibur" used the lip as as a deployment way before Kershaw picked it up =p

  • @GunnarTh3Azul

    Burger? It's Böker.

  • @zanuha Do a bit of research before you post. Burger is a custom maker who designed the Exkelibur. Boker started producing a cost-effective production version.

I suppose you think Kershaw designed the Junkyard Dog and the Lahar, as well?

  • @ethancfbz

    Right.

    Also, Leatherman Blade Launcher.

  • @zanuha If you're addressing me, I never said anything about Kershaw inventing this opening system, only that Boker didn't design the Exkelibur.

  • nutnfancy, how could you forget buck? the all american classic

  • Just got the NRG-II (1745) today, the slightly larger version than the 1740. It was a steal for 26 bucks. Looks like Kershaw made a couple of cool changes. First of all they have upgraded the steel to Sandvik 14c28N, over the 13c26 in Nutn's version. Mine also appears to have skeletonized liners... a nice way to keep the weight down. Deployment does take a bit of getting used to though. After being used to thumbstuds, the flipper will take some time to master. Very awesome knife.

  • cut the crap, show me the knife , f,,, your review

  • @xSlavic obviously you are not a knife enthusiast. The company behind the knife is equally as important as the knife itself.

  • What do you think of the Leatherman c33L?

  • Kershaw is by far my favorite knife manufacturer, and my favorite knife designer is Ken Onion. I probably own about 10-12 EDC knives, and probably 8 are Ken Onion designed Kershaws. Thanks!

  • tight locking blades are becoming one of kershaw's main trademarks.

  • Knife Outlet has these for $25. I've never purchased from them and, from what I've seen, their seller ratings aren't that great but for the price I'm willing to give them a try. Fred, the owner, is a member of knifeforums and has a few hundred posts; if anything goes awry, he will be hearing from me.

  • @jrmym2 Got the knife today... no problems with knifeoutlet so far. The knife is smaller than I had initially thought; perfect size for edc, imo. Only qualm is the trak-tec(I think) under the pocket clip makes it a little hard to slip over the pocket and collects tufts of lint.

  • I believe the flipper is NOT part of the tang, but a seperate piece. Don't have one yet to confirm.

  • your correct

  • you're right its not part of the blade

  • hey nutn, kershaw has a new assisted knife commin out called the speedform, you should revew it cuz i heard its around 100-130$ and i really want it but its way out of my price range so i would like to know if its worth the money

  • Do you think it is possible to sand the part underneath the clip down so that it won't rough up your pockets?

  • @rydude07 That part of the grip is actually rubberized so it would be a bit difficult to sand cleanly without tearing up the grip.

  • Just bought an ener-g II at a knife show this weekend, the flipper on the back is actually NOT an extended tang on the blade. It is its own separate piece that pivots flat onto the back of the knife to provide extra grip and is not attached to the blade in any way. Great knife btw

  • is EKT a good brand because i baught an assisted opener from them

  • are autos legal in california

  • if they are under two inches, and if not prohibited in your locality.

  • @bim5555 If they are under 2 inches.

  • nope. assisted openings are tho...

  • i e-mailed SOG last week about some issues with my CREED. Haven't heard shit back from them.

  • I own the slightly larger 1745 but otherwise the same knife. Mine has practically no closed blade retention at all and the only way to fix that is tighten the pivot so much it is unusable. The flipper thing is a device contained within the handle that pushes the blade open rather than part of the blade itself. I still like the knife but would not dare carry it as I am concerned about blade retention safety issues as well as potential legal issues with it like that (think gravity knife).

  • @thebedula that's not a gravity knife, agravity knife is something totally different!

  • acctualy its not an extended tang if you open the knife half way and hold the blade still you can move the flipper. no disrespect, love your vids nutn

  • i found it for 25.00

  • Comment removed

  • Extended tang? I've heard that it is a two-piece cam design, not an extended tang, and so Kershaw should brag on that. Sorry if I missed anotations or other comments but the NRG blades I've been seeing have a two pc cam design.

    Thanks for the excellent video.

  • @2r4j6w It is a two-piece design. The flipper is not one solid piece with the blade.

  • I just ordered this knife as a Christmas gift to myself, I'm PUMPED

  • I think you should becoma a steel snob lol.

You have the ability to atriculate in a way thats easier for guys like me to understand.

    Awsome review man!!

  • Thanks for the great review! Out of curiosity, how thick is the blade?

  • @LouieG7777 lol i was just readin the old comments, this person is a complete idiot, he states that the kershaw box causes the knives to be overpriced, first off if he thinks kershaw is overpriced, he has never owned more than a 10 dollar crap blade, and secondly kershaw uses high quality materials and offer some of the fairest prices on the market, in a fairly simple box

  • @bobmellon Ok sorry mellon head. I still think these blades are over-priced. Anyone who pays 60-100$ for a pocket knife is an idiot in my opinion.

  • @LouieG7777 well you simply do not understand quality, as there are many good knives under that range, but in the 60-100 dollar range are GREAT knives that will out perform your home depot winchester crap blade any day, not to mention you are probably 13 because you just called me mellon head, and therefore have no job, and therefore don't have any money to spend on knives so for you ya kershaw is probably expensive

  • @bobmellon I wouldn't want to lose a $100 dollar pocket knife in a survival or camping situation.

  • @LouieG7777 well honestly i wouldn't bring a cheap knife into a camping or survival situation because it generally means that the blade steel will not be very great at holding an edge or dealing with abuse and tough conditions, and if it is a survival situation, that blade may be the only thing you have depending on your preparedness, and you losing that knife would not be a problem of value at that point because you may have just lost the only tool you had to survive

  • eknifeworks has these for 20$ , just picked one up and a Victorinox Camper.

  • Comment removed

  • the extended dang isnt part of the blade it floats on top of the blade

  • I got the NRG II and it is a heck of a nice knife. Sharpens easy, super fast deployment. The NRG II has skeletonized liners, so isn't real heavy. Hollowground thin blade, kinda like a Sebenza, but slightly thicker, which I like. You will need to bend the clip outward a little so you can get the knife out of your pants though, as it comes from the factory its way too tight.

  • Hey i have this knife and the liners are starting to show tiny little rust spots? any ideas?

    thanks

  • to keep rust from forming, rub oil on the metal parts. it forms a little coat on the steel keeping the oxygen from it. you put a drop on a rag rub it on, then rub it off with a dry part of the rag.

  • Is it possible to drill your own holes in the liners? Will it weaken the knife too much?

  • If you drill it with lubricant to prevent the metal form heating up it shouldn't weaken it. just stay away from the important areas. nutn fancy has a video of him doing somewhere.

  • I got mine for $26.16 +$5.95 shipping. It's 1 of 500 special edition Sandvik 13C26...

    Another great vid my friend!

  • How much does it cost?

  • Got mine on ebay for 24 bucks.

  • just received my NRG. I love it!

  • I have this knife and its Awesome!!

  • does any one know if it is made in the U.S?

  • if im correct, all kershaw knives are...

  • most are

  • yes

  • That's not an extended tang, it's actually a SEPERATE piece... open the knife a little bit and You can wiggle it around. So it is quite unique :)

  • Comment removed

  • @cubixthe no, Hes correct.. it is extended

  • My 1740 nrgy just came today, but it won't budge open??? ive read the papers inside box... HELP please ;)

  • Bitchmade steals ideas

  • i have never heard of this... please explain

  • Just ordered one, cost me $62 but, i love the look of blade, lenght, wieght, size ( in general) sharpness you talk about without having to bother sharpening it right outa box, and new steel sounds promising =-D...

Its just what ive been looking for to replace my currect EDC, my current one is serrated but i really wanted a straight blade edge, and i got it =D hah...

Less than a week till it arrives!

  • One point about hyping the design, sir: sometimes hype is a part of the business relationship with the designer. They may feel like they reinvented the wheel and expect to see that sentiment in documentation. I see it all the time with my public relations interface...

  • he means the general look of the "flipper lever" and function. having it stow away inside the handle is kinda ostentatious, because then you dont have an extended tang to help keep your hand from sliding upwards in a thrusting motion.

  • that doesn't mean he has to like it, nobody likes it when anybody acts like it is the end all superior thing that nothing can come close to. its just annoying.

  • i have one i think it sux so hard. it rips your skin when you open it and i think the deployment is slow

  • never mind i adjusted it now and its awesome

  • I just got mine, and it won't open!? I have the same problem as u.. my index is almost bleeding... how do i adjust it?? ive been trying for 1 hour + .. and its still closed ffs... help me out? thanks.

  • at the top of the knife there's a allen wrench hole. stick an allen wrench in there and turn it counter clock wise a little and see if it opens. repeat the process till it opens or until about 3 full turns. if it does not open i don't have a suggestion. tell me if it opens or not!

  • u gotta loosen that black screw on the top handle with a torques bit

  • My Skyline ripped up my index finger when I first got it. It was really strange but it doesn't seem to do it and just with the slightest flick of the wrist the deployment is wickedly fast.

  • Nutnfancy I just bought an NRG2 today and I did want to point out that the flipper is a bit different than standard, give it a chk, its not actually attached to the blade.

  • Im not dissing, im only giving contructive criticism to help others just in case nutnfancy is wrong because no body is perfect.

  • i had my mind set on a delica but now i think i'll buy this!

  • Hey nutnfancy, you stated "...the same as any other flipper system such as CRKT"

Well, first of all the flipper system in the nrg is a new mechanism.

Other flippers will have the flipper part of the knife. While this is not "an extended tang on the knife", you do notice that the flipper is hidden when the knife is deployed.

Try having the blade opened at 45 degress from opening, you will notice the "flipper" is merely a lever that can be pulled down and up.

  • im whats with the ratings im dissing the other guy not nutnfancy

  • @SmoothShavingCream well spotted..though I personally like the tang as it offers extra grip space..

  • does anybody know kershaws webside?

  • I'm thinking about getting this knife as my first knife ever! But i was wondering if it would be able to handle more utility type tasks like cutting a seatbelt if any one knows plz let me know thx.

    Keep it up nutnfancy!

  • i dont know how you will keep your knife or if you know how to sharpen but as long as you keep it sharp it will do fine i'm sure

  • i have a kershaw 1725 zing jw if youve seen the sort or were planning on a review of it. thnx love your stuff keep it up!

  • Do a review on a your favorite italian stilletto :)

  • dig thease comps

    rock on nutn

  • Hey I have had mine for only two or three weeks and it is already starting to rust on me! I've had it on me every day since purchase but I haven't done too much heavy work with it. Why is it rusting? I apply WD-40 every night. Any comments on how I can keep it rust free and maybe get rid of the rust without ruining my finish?

  • Use a gun oil or 3in1 oil, NOT WD-40. It doesn't prevent rust.

  • wd-40 is a terrible mechnical lubricant(it's really more of a solvent that just happens to be slick). It dissipates quickly and offers no protection. Use gun oil, or even some bicycle bearing lubricants work as well.

I honestly wouldn't be shocked if the wd-40 took any sort of coating off that may have been on the knife to begin with.

  • An alternative to gun or knife oil for preventing rust is VASELINE -if you aply it to your blade it works great and everyone has it, BUT, its probably not so good for your pivot points or inner mechanics.

  • wd40 displaces water, i use it when i am going to store a mechanical item for awhile..

  • I have owned a lot of knives through out my life and my Kershaws have ALWAYS been tough and smooth. They're great.

  • kershaw is excellent !!!

  • on the ener g2 the tang isnt really attached to the blade. stops flat with jimping

  • You say that an EDC knife over $40 is expensive, but the way I see it is that, if I'm going to good coin on a knife (ex. Benchmade 960), I had better be carrying it every day and not letting it sit in a collection. I feel like it needs to be carried and and make it as if I'm defraying the cost day over day. But that's just me.

But I do agree that a knife over $40 is expensive. Just gotta justify it by using it (while still taking care of it.) So my 960 is always in my pocket.

  • did you say...

    october, juliet, badminton?

  • whats "october, juliet, badminton"

  • never mind

  • never mind

  • nice kershaw review, thank you for sharing!

  • my nrg 2 (the bigger one) has completely skeletonized liners, there isnt a section on them that hasnt been sacrificed to save weight. They are mostly there to hold the special flipper in, which you should take a closer look at.

  • how much does it cost?

  • Around $45 - $50

  • Sandvik 13C26 is the standard grade for surgical knives...so its good steel

  • it's not just an extended tang... the flipper uses a cam and pivot system to give you mechanical assistance when flipping it. You need to look at this mechanism closer, it is unique. Not just a standard fixed flipper.

  • yeah thats what i was gonna post in my comment. i own the nrg 2 and it is far from normal.

  • can u make a vid on all your tanto blade knifes thank you i cant decide

  • whats a hollow ground blade mean?

  • it means the grind is concave, ground on a WHEEL not on a flat belt grinder. Knives with that kind of grind cut better, weigh a bit less but they're not very strong (unless thick).

  • which are you referring to when you saw "that kind"

  • the hollow ground knives :)

  • oh so a scandanavian grind would be weaker?

  • Love The Knife :D , Its a knife i may have overlooked if i hadn't seen this video , i have the groove and was looking for something similar but slightly smaller, i'm sure you will agree that you dont miss the thumbstuds :D and without them adds to the beauty of the blade , as for sharpening the groove (same blade steel ) it is very easy to sharpen takes a wicked edge and has decent edge holding , not the best out there but for the money you pay its superb,Keep on posting all the great reviews .

  • Hey RoadRacer, how does the steel compare to, say, D2?

  • pretty good i find the 13c26 easier to sharpen and i mean hair poppin sharp. edge retention may not be as good as d2 but i use my kershaw daily cutting up cardboard boxes and i only need to touch up the edge once or twice a month , over all the steel is very very good and stays sharp for a decent length of time even with above average use,not sure about corrosion resistance as i never got the knife wet , :D hope this helps .

  • Ok, cool. Thanks for the information.

  • you are by far the most helpful reviewer i've watched. there is a knife that i have been looking at lately and that is the kershaw leek 1660cb. would you be able to do a review on it? thank you so much. -Alex

  • hey i got the bantam buck knife do you think you can do a review on it?.....thank you.

  • Yes I can guarantee you I will review that knife... it is EXCELLENT>

  • THANK U:D,,,,,,,hey this is popothugstas main account um when you make the video can you send the link, thank you very much

  • Agreed, functionally it is the same as a flipper. I just didn't think it was right to dismiss Lee's ingenuity and hard work as 'hype' on Kershaw's part.

I went through a dozen or so 3" folders before finding the 1740 to be my EDC. Nice review BTW, keep it up.

  • The NRG 1740 is my EDC, edging out Spydercos and Benchmades, glad you've also found it to be a nice knife.

You dismissed all the work Lee Williams did on that flipper, it is in fact NOT an extended tang on the blade. Take another look. You'll notice that the flipper isn't connected to the blade at all, but rides in a track inside the handle. This allows it to be both the flipper, for opening the blade, and also the stop pin.

  • Yep I did miss that, thanks for that clarification. However to me it functions about the same.

  • what do you think of Kershaw Alaskan blade trader ??

  • It's nice to see reviews from a guy in the military. Keep it up, dude!

  • awsome review
