@nicefrog45 Sorry for the 3 month long wait, and I'm sure that by now you have probably found out the title, but if not then the actual name of the poem is called "Stars I Shall Find" by Sara Teasdale. It is more commonly known though as "There Will Be Rest". When you google it, be sure to write "stars I shall find poem" and it should come up. :)
I want to sing this one day... I really, really want to.
The quality of this is wonderful. I don't know the song well, but if I listen, I feel like I can find each part. I'm going to just sit here and.... listen. <3
i think it's important to find the actual stillness in this piece. there are places where the music doesn't need to move forward. it just needs to be. this song could be so much more moving if the choir connected the actual story behind frank creating the song and the poet who wrote these powerful words. that's the only way for this song to take flight and move an audience.
I have been introduced to this Sara Teasdale poem by the singer Mary Chapin Carpenter. However I can't find the words under that title when I find her poems, so does it go under a different name other then ' Let There Be Rest' ? Chapin also told us to look at a YouTube version by the Choral Project but I can't seem to locate that version.I had not heard of Sara Teasdale before but would like to read a biography. I think Frank Ticheli wrote the music. Can anyone help me find the poem etc.
sometimes i think ms. west pulling out this song for us was a blessing. i really needed this song at that time in my life and it was just absolutely beautiful. i'll never forget it.
This piece is so beautiful. I think I love it so much because of the story behind it. The woman who wrote the poem ended up taking her own life. What a wonderful, powerful, song.
Great job! But the "above" part was DEFINITELY too fast, it's the most powerful part of the piece and it seemed pretty rushed. But other than that the performance was excellent :)
It takes maturity to appreciate and love the dissonance in the beginning. I think the dissonance conveys the restlessness felt by losing someone. Eric Whitacre uses dissonance in almost every single one of his pieces, that's why he's so unique and popular. Frank Ticheli did a beautiful job in using this technique to make this piece truly awesome.
the "Above me" part is the most powerful part in the whole song and u guys rushed through it like yall were on speed... other then that it was very good
@dknj6142 Actually I think that is all up to he conductor's preferences, my college choir is taking it at about this tempo at parts and sometimes even slower just to make sure that we don't rush through the music and leave out it's purpose.
Any commenter that is only listening for minor technical problems, is missing the whole point of music performance...you just enjoy it in the moment and for what it is....I am tone deaf but this founds fabulous to me!
Beautiful build up of the chords and dynamics. Your musicality is great. Very nice blend and balance. My choir recieved gold at the Heritage Festival held in Washington DC during the Presidential Inauguration. You guys sound awsome. I like how the soprano notes soared.
Sure, I have some very minor complaints, some of which have to do with technique, some of which have to do with the interpretation song, but overall, this is incredible!
I heard this song performed tonight by a collegiate choir, and I can't wait to tell my chorus director about it tomorrow! It was so simple yet it gave me chills.
Our a cappella choir sang this my senior year of high school..what a privelage it was to be able to be a small part of this gorgeous piece. It is my favorite piece that I've ever sang in a choir. This choir did a beautiful job as well, it brings me right back.
I think this is an absolutely lovely performance of this amazing piece. Well done! The nuances you created were immaculate! There was NO rushing...only acceleration, completely needed in this piece. Beautiful job!
Some bits of this did feel rushed. I think my biggest complaints are just my being accustomed to hearing it sung by a 32-voice choir as opposed to whatever size this one is. Some phrasings don't make sense, but that's a matter of interpretation. Really, I must reiterate the complaints about the "above me" section. Never mind that the intonation suffered then as well.
i was fortunate enough to sing this in the kennedy center my sophomore year with our varsity hs choir....i will never forget this song....great job guys
Your tone quality is beautiful and the clusters balance really well, but I do agree that the "Above me" section sounded a little frantic. But hey, music is up for interpretation...that's what makes it cool!!
Absolutely beautiful rendition of this song!!! however, i feel that the end of the song after the "i shall find the crystal of peace" section, that the "aboves" go far too fast! they're an amazing part of this piece, so i think they ought to be slowed down
That was a stellar performance. We are doing this song at my school for a memorial service for a teacher who recently died, and we're doing it with piano, partly becuase some of us learned it within two days of when we're performing it... But still. This is a really difficult song to pull off so well, and completely a capella. Really good job.
overall you guys did a good job, there were a few rushing moments particularly in "a reign a rest", "crystal of peace" and the "above me" parts of the piece, which you isn't your fault, it's your conductor's interpretation. She needed to realize though that this song is written from a poem, in which the woman committed suicide, and the song should represent the joy she will find once she is amongst the stars. a good performance, check out Armstrong High School Choir, we sang it as well.
i agree...my senior year we attempted to do this piece but a death in the school made the piece a bit to emotional for some of the members. i've sung it at county, district, and regional chorus and everyone does it differently. our choir didn't go to london...but we were rated one of the best mixed ensembles in the state of pa so i'm satisfied.
oh man, this was fantastic. this song is so difficult, especially with a choir of this size. i sang this in chamber choir my senior year of high school, and it was a big challenge. awesome job.
Wow, that was fucking sweet. I've never been able to say this before but you guys did this better than us haha. Your high sops killed it, as did 1st tenors but thats nothing new haha. Awesome sound.

i just got done a couple of days ago with my high school exactly the same version other than directoral differences...one of my top fav songs to perform and the story behind the compostition is truly sad and really brings the song into context. it is interesting to hear it with a british accent i live in texas (not from texas : ) we dont all have texas "twang" but the american vs. british is definetly different
colorado all state did this song this year and it was really amazing. I am very impressed witht his choir though, especially for being a high school choir!!! Blew me away. A slightly faster tempo would have been niceer, but great job!
Excellent!!! Just this past semester at my college we started on this peice and it blew me away. I want this done at my funeral lol...everyone in this choir has a great pitch-almost no flaws.
great job my chorus is performing this as well

The person who wrote this song wrote it for his friend who had his kid and his wife die on the same day. Quit being an ass.

i didn't know that, and I apologize sincerely for the rudeness of my comment. Had I known that I would not have expressed myself in that way =(
Nonetheless, i still think it was a poor choice of notes in the begining... =\
However, the rest of the song is beautiful.
