  • MRK460: Jlong, I have a group at school that I'm working with. We decided to exchange email addresses to pass information. . They asked why I have the number 4 in my email address 4 times. I told them that 4 is my lucky number. They replied that in their country (China) the number 4 is a very unlucky number and means death or the devil.

  • @jesselong4444 in hong kong "some high-rise residential buildings omit all floor numbers with "4", e.g. 4, 14, 24, 34 and all 40–49 floors, in addition to not having a 13th floor. As a result, a building whose highest floor is number 50 may actually have only 35 physical floors."

  • A few years back I went on a trip to Panama. The weather was beautiful and the people were very friendly. I learned that the men are extremely protective of their woman. The women there are very attractive and flirtatious. Which is not a good thing at all because if you even look at a guys girl they will chase you down… I learned this from experience. Good thing I can run fast!!!

  • One major thing to know when selling to Sri Lankan Tamils is to be very friendly. We don’t really care about the facts and essays of information; we would usually buy if the seller is nice. Sriskaran K.MRK460MT

  • Here are a few more facts about Italy based on my own personal experience, First impressions are very important so you have to be respectful, dress appropriately and introduce yourself properly if you want to keep a connection. Although all Italian kiss each others cheek as a way to say hello it is not respectful to do so if you do not know the person, a hand shake is the correct way to introduce yourself.

  • I think learning about the language and customs about the other country is very important in terms of marketing.i strongly agree that 'mother tongue marketing' forms a very essential part to promote business. If we know know more about the different cultures then it is easy to understand them and easy to business with them.

  • Pakistan ranks very high among collective societies as compared to North America which is more of a individual society. In Pakistan, people have close ties with extended families. A lot of times they live together or close to each other. Products and services that are family oriented are preferred. Word of mouth is a great way of marketing products.

  • Going through the list, I only see that there is a comment about Filipino people loving skin whitening products. I love Asian culture, so I think it is important to add that the notion of white skin being important applies to many Asian cultures such as Hong Kong, China, and Korea:

White skin is a sign of wealth. If you are tanned, it means that you have to work outside or do physical labour; meaning you are poor, and lacking a good upbringing.

  • I have often found that people from different cultures clash when trying to communicate with one another. I feel as though a lot of us can sometimes be inconsiderate of cultural differences because we may not even be aware that they exist! This course has helped me perceive the conversations I have with those who are different from me in a different light - I will now take in to account what my words and actions may really come off as to others.

  • I'm Macedonian, and at often times, we are mistaken as Greek. Many Macedonians find it offensive when they are told they are Greek. We are still our own country, therefore we are not Greek. We do not speak the same language, we do not eat the same food and although the countries are very close together there are some differences amongst the cultures. And lastly...Alexander the Great was Macedonian, not Greek!!

  • Sydney - thanks for the clarification - i guess it is like Kiwis and Aussies (New Zealand and Australia)

  • @rsyds HEY SYD!! wow I can't believe you had this professor too!

  • It's always been pretty awkward when I shake the hands of older Chinese men, for some reason they always have a weak handshake and I feel like I'm death griping them. Then I learned from your course that a passive handshake is more appropriate in the Asian culture, which I found surprising! I was raised in Canada and was oblivious to a cultural difference as simple as a handshake!

  • I thought about my own country, pakistan, and i spoke to my parents whom i always knew to be very price conscious (a special way for saying cheap) and they told me when they used to see ads in pakistan things always seemed to come down to affordability. i looked into some companies that operate in pakistan and their # 1 cellular service provider, mobilink, focuses solely on differentiation with its packages Indigo and Jazz. i figure that PD is best strategy to market to Pakistan

  • I think learning about the language and customs about the other country is very important in terms of marketing. For example, I heard that households in Spain normally don't have refrigerator that can fit in 2 litre Coke bottle, so Coke had to re-call the 2 litre Coke bottles. There are many incidences involving the translation of the word or slogan: for example, the brand slogan of American Airline was "fly in Feather", which translated into "strip and fly" in Sout America.

Looking at the profiles of the Ghanaian team, most of their players have low educational background and as that communicating with their coach who was a Serbian was a key problem. Thinking of soccer to be one of the businesses that earn these players their daily living, then the barrier of communication should be eradicated. Therefore, for effective communication to promote business, 'mother tongue marketing' should be adopted by recruiting a local coach.

  • From my perspective of watching and listening to this video, i strongly agree that 'mother tongue marketing' forms a very essential part to promote business. From this video, prof, elaborated on communication in business. This gives me a quick reflection about sports or soccer to be precise in some African countries that played in the just ended Fifa World Cup. Countries like Nigeria, Cote-d'ivoire and Ghana presented foreign coaches.

    - When receiving gift from someone, don't open it in front of the person.

    - Simple Chinese greetings would be apprciated, it could be Mandarin or even better in Taiwanese.

    - Many people in Taiwan have warm feelings about sweet potato, because the shape of sweet potato is similar to that of Taiwan. Also, sweet potato can grow in poor conditions, it represents the perseverance of Taiwanese.

    - Name a few famous Taiwanese stars would be a great help such as baseball star Chien-Ming Wang.

  • hello prof,

I really like the way you list all the countries on the website to give people ideas of how to do business with others in different cultural backgrounds.

By the way, I am from Taiwan, and I do have a little suggestions for doing business in Taiwan.

-When formally meeting someone, it would be polite to slightly nod your head when you shake hands with people. Also be sure to look at person's eyes with a smile. Make sure everything looks natural.
