I think you can hear Albert in Coltrane in some of the simple melodic cells that Trane would work with --- Meditations starts with a nursery rhyme type melody --- I think it keeps all the abstraction rooted in something close to the heart and earth. Beautiful men, both.
The master of timbral inflection. Coltrane was my guiding light for a very long time, but over the last couple of years, Albert's approach has made me think about things differently. There was no one like him.
I bought a used cd of the "Love Cry" to check him out but was disappointed a bit. His style is very unique and expressive, but it doesn't move me. I don't care for the marching band brass sound that is prevalent.
yeah I was disappointed by the brass band thing at one point, too...but that stuff has its place. His very first records are revolutionary in the field of jazz solist expression, but the brass band stuff is a radical departure. But like many musicians (anybody REALLY excited about the new Paul Mccartney record?) his first stuff was the best, and he went downhill from there. That's just a lot of revolutionary musicians, but I think even that brass band stuff is cool, differently.
i think the live albums from impulse were just as good as albums like spiritual unity. realistically they are even more evolved and refined. But i love all albert ayler albums. Maybe not the one called last album but even that had a couple of songs that were even further ahead than any of his stuff.

ahead of his time...
Art needs artists who are willing to screw everything up in order to see new possibilities and push forward... otherwise, it's the same old crap...
