  • What a better way ta spend a winters morning than shooting a few arrows,

    great video Martin,

  • haha, the lamb legs-- last nights dinner right??

  • @masterkiter89 Not quite but I wish it had been. :)

  • @bigbowbrum - haha

  • What A Great Archer ....Respect..Well done on the video...I enjoyed it...Thanks Great Job..

  • An excellent video, could you tell me what the length of the arrows used here is please?

  • @markitisthen Yes of course. The shaft is approximately 31" from the base of the nock to the begining of the head.

  • Smashing video..very artistic! I remember a great thrill of shooting a yew bow near the English line at Agincourt (no I'm not that old) but I was tootling about the place on my Enfield motorycle about 1990 and at the crossroads there was a cafe run by an English chap...he had a range at the back with cedar arrows, bodkins, the lot!...and instead of a latte to finish off you could relive a bit of history. Magic, thanks guys

  • That is a nice war bow.

  • What a great video. Captures the essence of being out in the country on a beautiful morning with your bow. I like the firing at a high arc like you're facing some French mounted knights. And don't think we didn't notice the ballock knife...

  • how many arrows does that quiver hold?

  • @zoopcoolapcar Martin's linen arrow bag holds about 30 arrows. Normally this style of arrow bag has a leather spacer disk sewn into the inside of the bag, cut with 24 holes to hold a medieval sheaf of arrows such that their fletchings will not become crushed. Martin's is a simpler design without the disk so it holds a few more.

  • I thought this would be pheasnt shooting!

  • what was the battlefield purposeof tthe 'towton' arrowhead, andwhatisitthatmakesa 'plate cutter head' special?

  • @elgostine A plate cutter has a short, 4-sided, almost pyramidal shaped front which creates the initial hole, the 4 sides of the massive lozenge head then create small cuts enabling the metal to split & curl back out of the way. The head is thick to stop it bending or curling like a needle bodkin. The head is wider than the shaft to allow the shaft to slip through the hole without further friction. The Towton head was just one type found at the site. I imagine it was a general purpose head.

  • @bigbowbrum could you maybe PM me with a example of one, that hape is hard to imagine,

the shape of the V2 rocket comes to mind though. albeit pyramidal rather than conical

  • @elgostine Sure.

  • What do you guys use as string material, something more primitive or modern stuff? Thanks for posting this inspiring video! -Nax

  • @NaxTactical Hi Nax. We use modern string materials such as Dacron or FastFlight. I do know some guys that have experimented with hemp and linen, but I am not convinced enough about its durability to risk using it myself yet.

  • i agree very nice shooting indeed

  • Nice shooting, you're videos really do help as do your replies to our comments. I know Youtubers can be quite frustrating at times ;D but I must say thank you for posting these videos.

  • @WolfOfBloodAndBone You are very welcome Jason. I enjoy the opportunity to chat with people from all over the world with a shared interest.

  • Can you comment on what Martin is wearing on his belt? It appears as if he has two daggers and a pouch. Are these medieval accoutrements, i.e. something an archer would wear when shooting during the middle ages? Thanks, great video!

  • Good question. Martin is wearing a bollock dagger which is a medieval knife used for general use in the medieval period and which archers probably kept on them at all times. The second dagger he won in an archery competition at Agincourt in France. The pouch is fairly authentic. Medieval hose (trousers) didn't have pockets so they wore pouches. He also has a spare shooting glove on his belt. We wear daggers these days to dig our arrow heads out of the target (or the earth!)

  • @bigbowbrum Thanks for the reply. Had another question, do you do any specific weight training exercises for shooting these heavyweight bows? I handle a 65lb longbow well enough (been shooting for about 10 years) but want to move up to something near the 110lb range. Thanks again!

  • @wkoslo Most warbow archers do no training other than shooting their bows. Guys buy bigger bows, say perhaps 10 or 20 lbs more than their old bow, and simply work with that, gradually getting the string back further as they get stronger. I weight train as a hobby anyway, but I wouldn't say it helps much as many smaller men than me shoot warbows bigger than mine. If you want to train with weight then concentrate on back, shoulder, tricep and bicep strength with pulleys and free weights.

  • Very beautiful bow and arrow , And great video!!

  • 220 yards!

    That's impressive!

  • Thank you, although we have friends who shoot bows around the 130lbs mark who can get these arrows around 270 yards!

  • Nice place for shooting :)

My bows are resting and waiting for spring ;)

    great video...

  • pretty inspiring video, nice

  • very nice and inspiring video

  • Glad you liked it Eriazim. Thanks for the comment.

  • Great video! But I must say, I had expected a 110lb warbow to shoot further than 220 yards. How heavy are the arrows?

  • Distance depends more on the "cast" of the bow and the size of the arrow. 220 yards is actually pretty good with this type of arrow. Martin was shooting poplar shafts that were 1/2 inch at the head, tapered to 3/8 inch at the nock, fletched with 7 inch turkey feathers. They weigh around 65 grams.

  • Oh ok. That says it all. 65 grams is around 1000 grains.

  • I have been thoroughly enjoying all of these videos. But this one is just plain outstanding!! I love the music! I'm a flatbow shooter myself, but have a very soft spot for English longbows.

  • Thank you. Yes, wooden bows don't like sub-zero temperatures. If I had taken the video this week it would have been much the same as Sweden though!

  • This is simply Beautyful! I'm so much missing shooting my own bows, but at -16C it's a lttle to frisky now.Would have been fun thoug, with all the snow and wintery shrubbery out there now... Just Love Your vids and looking forward to sprigtime here in Southern Norway...

  • Hi, yes -16C is a little too cold for shooting wooden bows! ha ha, although I can imagine that southern Norway is very beautiful at any time of year. Glad you like the video. It was a beautiful day.

  • HI...i have an contradiction with someone...they said the bow is yew,, and i told themm the bow is osage with ash, or hickory backing....dose anibody knows exactly from what this bow is made of???thks.

  • Hi. We do have bows made of yew, Italian yew to be exact, and those bows appear in some of our other videos, but this bow is a laminated bow, with a belly of Piquia Marfim and a backing of Hickory. You were half right at least! ha ha. Best wishes.

  • Is this a yew warbow ?

  • No, it is a laminate of Hickory and Piquia, which is a brazillian wood.

  • Would you ever travel and hunt with your bow? Not many people have taken game with a real English Longbow.

  • No it doesn't appeal to me. I am a meat eater, and I would happily hunt with a bow if my life depended on it, but I see no fun in killing animals just for fun. Anyway, I don't think I am a good enough shot either!

  • I'm shooting the longbow since one year now. This video is a dream for every one who love the Sunday morning.

  • Man, you killed me with this video... the video, the music... I need to go out and shoot few arrows!!!

    110 lbs... congratulations!

    Five stars from me!

    Merry Christmas!

  • nice video

so i guess there wasn't any snow at southampton?

  • @Navi1Lo No snow in Southampton, although 12 miles up the road Winchester had roads blocked by the stuff! Being near the coast and the Isle of Wight we have our own unique weather systems.

  • very good

  • we can do it,with every ones HELP .Martin

  • thank you everyone for your comments I really am flattered ,Nick does make an excellent job .Its good to have him as a friend, and as a team we aim to Please ! Keep viewing we may make the Million views, not far to go,lets do it for Nick. Tell your friends. Martin 62 but Young at Heart.

  • Ha ha, only another 340,000 views to go mate before my account reaches the 1 million mark! A film is only as good as the subject matter me old pal.

  • Hats off for him! Powerfull bow and that was full draw everytime. Nice video, beatiful land and good music. Greetings from Finland and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

  • hey English gentlemen, I really appriciate video's like this! Very scenic & nicely done! it's just an pleasure to watch and ik makes you wanna walk outside and do the same as Martin does. btw i started making an ash bow, till now its going well, but it isn't easy! I'll let you know when im finished! well that's all for now,

Cheers from Holland and let Martin know his work is appriciated!

  • Good luck with the Ash bow. Merry Christmas.

  • Nice video, hope more will come soon! Wish you Happy Holidays!

  • @sorbothane Martin is naturally strong, having a physically demanding job (despite being 62 years of age!), and he has drawn heavier bows than this one. However, it does have more to do with technique than just raw strength. Difficult to say how long as everyone is different. Some could do it after 1 year, others could take several years. The best way is a combination of specific weight training and archery.

  • Very Good video !!!

    Beautfull Bow ....and nice shooting..

    Merry Christmas

  • @CombatArchery Merry Christmas to you too Bo. Hope you are well.

  • those arrows could go right thrue a man right?

    very nice vid

  • They may well go through far enough to protrude out a man's back, yes, but padded armour, maille and plate armour would obviously be worn which would slow, stop or deflect the arrow to varying degrees.

  • NICE SHOOTING

  • really good to see another video, and good shooting Martin can't wait for your next video hope it comes soon thanks guys!

  • You want more?! ha ha. Give me time Leonardo! :)

  • Stunning! Top notch!

  • Amazing vid!!! Really enjoyed it! :)

  • Great video man. Keep going.

  • Good to see you're still making videos.

Was that lamb leg cooked? It will lose durability and flexibility if cooked.

  • I think Martin cooked the meat to stop it going off so quickly.

  • As always, a delight to see Martin lob them arrows over distance! ;o)

  • Hey excellent Nick , you are the best!! A new video !!!
