Mmm, the dubbers fail to deliver the feel of the characters which the japanese crew does so wonderfully. Its not their fault... most of the time the seiyuus work in the recording stage with plenty of asistance from the animation studio, so they have as much support as an actor from a good director. The overseas dubbers have to fend for themselves and its quite hard.

Chiyo's voice is ADORABLE! I like Osaka's accent for two reasons
1. It's not heavy or exagerrated. (like "Molly's" obviously fake and ear-splitting Brooklyn accent from Sailor Moon)
2. Since Osaka is from southern Japan, she would have a (Kansai) accent. That's impossible to recreate in the English dub, so they gave her a Southern U.S accent. That's pretty close to the original and good dubbing to me.

I think Azumanga Daioh is the best dub I've seen. o.O And I LOVE that clip. When I first bought the Class Album (Box set from ADV Films) and watched this, I was banging the desk with my fist, laughing hysterically.
Actually, since it is the only thing being discussed, if you want to hear a bad dub... Watch Urusei Yatsura 2 dubbed... If you want to see a bad adaptation, watch the DiC version of Sailormoon... Once you do that, you'll never be able to hate ADV dubs as much as you do now...
If I was Presisent of America, I would have the CIA do as much cover-up work as they could to make it seem like the English adaption of Sailor Moon never happened.
That's just great, no one in the world could've predicted that while watching it. Also, the dub is pretty good and I like it....but I'm less than pleased with Osaka's soutern accent, though I suppose it does fit her.
P.S. - I'm sure those of you who've seen the English dub of Spiral noticed this, Kanone had the strongest most FUCKING IRRITATAING southern accent possible. I like his personality and role in the show, but that DAMMNED southern accent just had me whishing him dead.

The reason why the dub sounds so bad is because it was not originally in English of course. Do a Japanese sub for an American movie and see how crappy it looks and sounds. Thats why I prefer original Japanese voice on Japanese shows. And prefer English only if the country its from is English speaking. Now maybe the dub fans will understand :p

Well, the Osakan dialect to the "regular" Japanese dialect is the equivalent to the English "country" dialect, so they wanted to keep it true to the vibe by making Osaka have that type of accent both in the English and Japanese dubs.
But, if done correctly (hard to accomplish with an anime like azumanga), a dub can get the point of the creator across more naturally than a sub. I understand Osaka with a southern accent sounds wierd, but that's the way it sounds to most Japanese. I think a well done dub is better than a sub.
I don't understand why there are all these purists who hate dubs because that's not the way the creators intended their anime to be heard. Most English speakers, including myself and many of these purists, can't understand japanese. Therefore, the best way to get the connotations of each character is through a dub. Admittedly, some dubs are awful and a good sub can be preferable.
Well some people like me would prefer to read through the entire show lol. Of course I'll even take raw Japanese before I go for dubbed though. But you gotta admit them trying to find a solution for the Osaka dialect in English must have been hard :p
I like the dub... especially Kimura's voice actor... by the way... if you don't like dubs then don't watch them and then post crap like several of the above posts here...

A word of advice to the lovely Pichuko, I suggest always keeping a sledge hammer within reach while using teh interwebs. If you come across an ENGRISH dub, which you apparently hate so much, immediately smash the HELL out of your speakers, CPU, and monitor. Then, and only then, will you have made it stop. Or...you could just press the little X in the top corner of your screen.
I prefer the dub, hah! In the original Chiyo sounds like she's sucking on helium and a little ganja... Basically, she sounds like she's trying to be about 3, rather than 10... It's annoying... I love the dub, and ADV's own jokes are sometimes better than in Japanese "Ok, dutch boy, let's see what you can do!" TBC
I've watched a number of eps in Japanese and in the English dub, and I prefer the dub in Azumanga's case... There are times where the Japanese voice actors are just bad, like Chiyo... Or Goku in DBZ

lol, I havnt seen that episode yet, but I think the english was ruined making Osaka have a country voice/accent

Well, the Osakan dialect to the "regular" Japanese dialect is the equivalent to the English "country" dialect, so they wanted to keep it true to the vibe by making Osaka have that type of accent both in the English and Japanese dubs.

But, if done correctly (hard to accomplish with an anime like azumanga), a dub can get the point of the creator across more naturally than a sub. I understand Osaka with a southern accent sounds wierd, but that's the way it sounds to most Japanese. I think a well done dub is better than a sub.

I don't understand why there are all these purists who hate dubs because that's not the way the creators intended their anime to be heard. Most English speakers, including myself and many of these purists, can't understand japanese. Therefore, the best way to get the connotations of each character is through a dub. Admittedly, some dubs are awful and a good sub can be preferable.

Well some people like me would prefer to read through the entire show lol. Of course I'll even take raw Japanese before I go for dubbed though. But you gotta admit them trying to find a solution for the Osaka dialect in English must have been hard :p

I like the dub... especially Kimura's voice actor... by the way... if you don't like dubs then don't watch them and then post crap like several of the above posts here...
I prefer the Osaka dub anyways... she sounds more stupid... which makes it seem funny to me...

A word of advice to the lovely Pichuko, I suggest always keeping a sledge hammer within reach while using teh interwebs. If you come across an ENGRISH dub, which you apparently hate so much, immediately smash the HELL out of your speakers, CPU, and monitor. Then, and only then, will you have made it stop. Or...you could just press the little X in the top corner of your screen.

I prefer the dub, hah! In the original Chiyo sounds like she's sucking on helium and a little ganja... Basically, she sounds like she's trying to be about 3, rather than 10... It's annoying... I love the dub, and ADV's own jokes are sometimes better than in Japanese "Ok, dutch boy, let's see what you can do!" TBC

I've watched a number of eps in Japanese and in the English dub, and I prefer the dub in Azumanga's case... There are times where the Japanese voice actors are just bad, like Chiyo... Or Goku in DBZ
