Joe Louis was a Negro Living in a white mans world i do believe he grew up in the segregational times but when he stepped into that ring he unleashed that furry in rage on his oppenents an is why hes one of the best ever he would have beat Mike tyson he would have probably alos either beat lewis or Holyfield as well
Joe Louise's was champion for 11 years, that's 4 more years than Holmes. His records speaks for itself. The best heavyweight of all time. Certainly better than Ali
@president234 Not necessarily. Klitschko's height alone would neutralise much of Louis' offence. I can imagine that by virtue of people watching this video they are Joe Louis fans and would back him against anyone. But it is a (sad) fact of sport that sportsmen have improved incrementally over the years. Unlike a distance runner, or a swimmer for example, there is no quantifiable way to measure a boxer's ability and that's why people seem to believe in the myth of legendary fighters.
@blllllllllleugh Louis fought opponents that were Klitschko's size and was able to knock them out. Louis' lack of weight was replaced by his tremendous power, accuracy, and defense. And Louis fought better quality opponents, Klitschko is fighting in a heavyweight division that is so incredibly weak.
@president234 If you are talking about Primo Carnera please don't tell me he was anything like Klitschko. He was a 6'6" version of Valuev. Any kind of insinuation that the two are in anyway comparable is ridiculous in the extreme. Both Klitschkos are calculated, precise using height and reach advantages to perfection. Vitali's output is infinitesimally greater than Carnera's and is much more devastating. Both Klitschkos could keep any small heavyweight at range. Louis KO predictions are bizarre
@blllllllllleugh That's easy to say about the Klitschko's when they've beaten nobody worth mentioning. Everything you said about the Klitschko brothers you could say about Louis and then some. Louis was far more skilled defensively, offensively, he had better punching power and he was able to dominate better competition than the Klitschko brothers had ever faced.
@blllllllllleugh A measurement can be made by watching this vid. Louis was an extremely gifted athlete. The film conveys an undeniable fact that the man had the reflexes of a cat! He could turn a punch on a dime & shoot a devastating blow into the smallest window of opportunity. He threw his punches short & powerful, just look at the impact on his opponents! He stands among few such men when it comes to generating this much torque at a close range. Longest reign, most defenses.
@lggriffin The point is that, unlike athletics for example, there is no measurement which you can give which demonstrates Louis' superiority. Many of the fighters he fought would not have been good enough to turn professional in today's game. Many were incredibly out of shape. He thrived on stationary opponents, which is why he struggled so much against fighters such as Ezzard Charles. Louis would effectively be a cruiserweight now and would be completely unable to deal with Klitschko's power.
@blllllllllleugh I agree w/president234. What barometer do you use to measure the ability of klitchko against Louis? Younger Klitchko got flattened by Sanders when Sanders hadn't fought in 2 yrs. For all u know, Klitchko could be Carnera in a much weaker era(today). Fighters were far better schooled and the fight game was packed w/more fighters from all ethnic origins. Times were tougher, people were harder. I think Louis would've clobbered the Klitchkos.
@blllllllllleugh I think Louis beats him because Vitali makes mistakes that would get him stopped IMO. The can work against the heavyweights he's fighting but not against someone like Louis, Louis was a master of parring jabs and I think Louis would have been able to utilize his smaller size and get on the inside and work the body. Vitali pulls his head back to avoid punches, it works for him now but who has he faced that can feint like Louis and then launch devastating counters?
@kenomy66 Vitali rarely makes mistakes. He is punch perfect, if not a little too textbook and awkward. Louis could not punch anywhere near as hard as, for example Lennox, and Vitali took the full majesty of that man's right phenomenal hand. I can't imagine how Louis would ever have been able to stand toe to toe and ultimately knock Klitschko out
@blllllllllleugh The guy ate a lot of right hands from Lennox, his style of keeping his hands low isnt good when you've got a heavyweight who can punch with decent accuracy and power and someone who can feint. Louis could punch hard, not as hard as Lewis but Louis could punch better with both hands, had faster hands and better combo punching, and could also fight on the inside
It bothers me how people tend to simply write off Louis as a good fighter who fought in a weak era. The truth is Joe Louis had 15 bouts against 12 different HOF boxers and had a record of 12-3 with 10KO's against them and Louis was never beaten twice. Louis' era wasn't weak, Louis was just head and shoulders better than the rest.
IMO, Joe Louis was the greatest Heavy Weight ever (even above Ali)! Second p4p fighter only losing to SRR. He was flawless after the Schmeling loss. A true Savage!!!
@1outlawz I rank Louis above Ali, too. I think most people rank Ali above Louis is because of his dynamic style and speed. Louis had it all, speed, power, defence and he didn't waste a thing.

Joe Louis............The most complete Heavyweight boxer in any era..........as a fighter he had it all........Plus he was a true champion in & out of the ring.......a Gentleman.
I think Joe Louis is the GREATEST!! Next Mike Tyson then Ali at third. The only
reason Ali as 3 because he is self proclaimed the greatest. No doubt one of the greatest but it is a toss between Louis and Mike. Today I heared the most disturbing comment that Manny Pacman is the greatest fighter EVER. WTF there are so many great fighters in history and he still has not fought the best Pound for Pound Floyd and tv is making these comments. He is not even close. neither is Floyd.
@biglouielou To say Tyson is better then Ali is laughable. Best boxers of all time were (1) Ali (2) Joe Louis (3) Rocky Marciano (4) George Foreman (5) Joe Fraizer (6) Lennox Lewis (7) Larry Holmes (9) Jack Dempsey (10) Mike Tyson. Tyson just about makes it into my top 10. He only won the title once. The sign of a great boxer is his ability to overcome defeat and make a comeback. He lacked one of the greatest attributes that a boxer and a champion can have and that's " Heart ".
@biglouielou Look at his record. Two loses in his career and defeated both in subsequent fights He beat every fighter of his generation. Techincally he is one of the best fighters. Just because he didnt have the hype around him. He had the perfect physique for boxing. Lok at his record, look at his fights, look at his techical ability and look at his knockouts.
@boscoesarmy Sugar Ray Robinson???? Ever fighter on your list would admit that SRR was THE GREATEST FIGHTER OF ALL TIME. Ali would tell you that today.
@Pleaver SRR was a weltherweight / middleweight boxer. I'm talking about the heavyweights. If it came to Pond for pound best of all time, then half the heavyweights I listed wouldn't be in the my top ten.
wow this is the 1st time ive seen him fight, although he was a tall guy he has very good head movement and his punches look like mike tysons punches. hav a look 2:04 keep clicking to view lovly defence stap back from a coming left hook and counter back with a left hook. good vid the music goes well with
He is just the over all fighter, every fighter has there strength, Ali (speed) Tyson (Power) Sugar Ray Robinson and Leonard (Power) Rocky Graziano (Strength) and Joe Louis (Picture Perfect)
As a boxer and heavyweight. JOE IS BOXING GOD! to appreciate the man is to box with gloves in the ring once in your life. His movements were beautiful he just so fundamentally sound.
Floyd Mayweather isn't a great fighter, he can only be considered a great fighter if he had fought some of the best of his time, the next best contender for floyd would be Manny Pacquiao. I know for a fact Mayweather's cockyness will get him caught with a loss. Joe Louis fought the best fighters of his time, and had won. Those fights being legends, such as Max Baer, and The Cinderella man. Thus making him one of the greatest fighter that ever lived.
This old school bum would get FUCKED UP if he ever had to step in the same ring as a REAL champion like floyd mayweather. You ain't SHIT Joe Louis, you ain't SHIT!
@gazz12345a joe louis was named the greatest heavywieght of all time by the boxing research oranization and was ranked number 1 in the ''RINGS '' 1OO GREATEST PUNCHERS OF ALL TIME . he ruled the heavywieght devision for 140 months with 25 succesful title defences . he made a record of (72 fights 69 wins 55 kos and 3 defeats . he faught the best fighters at tht time even when he was past his best . now prove 2 me why mayweather is better dont jst say he is.
joe louis america's first heavyweight boxing sweetheart. america didn't see a big black man who could fuck you up they just saw a real champ and everyone loved him.
A timeless film which captures the greatness of Joe Louis. It's a shame that time would ultimately have to catch up with him. Still, we have his magnificance etched in time, with films like this one. Seeing is believing...he truly was one of the greatest ever!
@godofthisshit Unfortunately Joe louis, like Tyson, was victimized more by the people he surrounded himself with. Not only did his people swindle him & use him like a race horse;to make money for their own coffers, they didn't protect him from himself. They weren't looking to advise him on his finances, as they were more concerned with their own. Joe made a lot of money & didn't pay taxes on it, as required. Eventually the govmt considered the good he did during WWII, and excused his tax bill.
Didn't the IRS go after Joe because he didn't pay taxes on fights he did for charity to raise money or the war efforts? They should have known better. I don't disagree about the rest of what you said.
@godofthisshit I don't believe so, I think it was the other way around, they ultimately excused him for the good deeds he did; donating his whole purse to charities, and exhibitioning for free for soldiers while he was a soldier, himself, during WWII. He didn't pay taxes on many of the fights he had where he made money, and this is why the IRS went after him.
@godofthisshit did you see the movie American Gangster? its based on a true story about Frank Lucas the harlem drug lord bringing pure heroin straight from the source in vietnam into the u.s. well in the movie joe louis is supposedly in franks night club and he speaks with him and asks joe how much do you owe and joe replies 50,000. so frank just gives it to him and says something like its not a loan its a give consider it a thank you for all that you did in the ring. you think that was real??
Why do people always have to argue? your never gonna win. theres always gonna be some other youtube troll that ups your opinion in someway. just enjoy the video, the beauty of joe louis' fighting style. argue somewhere else, dont disrespect the man
It's not a knowable fact that the champions of one era would defeat the champions of another. Having said that, the first thing I notice about Louis is his lack of footwork compared to Ali and many others. For all we know Roy Jones in his prime would have run rings around him. How would Louis have fared against Tyson? He might have made him look silly but can you be certain Tyson wouldn't demolish him? What about Foreman and Lennox Lewis. Did Joe ever face someone that big who was any good?
sorry but its a fact the guys today wouldnt handle louis marciano n dempsey, the technique of punches back than n everything else so much better. big guys today put too much emphasis on bulk which is y in my opnion they dont hit as hard, theres no evidence to suggest they do, n being big doesnt help u take a punch better anyway. like freddie roach said, louisd had perfect economy of motion, such a great boxer to study, n like dempsey n the rock, great technique in his punches
What beautiful images, had never seen Joe Louis footage, just read from the great ones (Liston, Frazier, Ali) that he was one of the early titans of the sport. What an amazing combination of grace, poise and murderous punches, amazing.
Also, I tai-boxed for a few years, and yeaaah... Never went beyond 6 rounds. Wasn't bad, but the stamina it required was STAGGERING. Learned a lot about respect there. Also, having been KO'ed twice, never understood how these guys managed to get up again...
They say Tyson and people like Lennox Lewis were the hardest punchers in the business but I disagree...My Dad seen this man live and he told me that Lewis punched so hard that you can hear the punches from where he sat five rows back... He said it was like a gun going off when Joe Louis hit a man!
one punch KO power in either hand. beautiful combinations. deadly accuracy. mastery over punch in the book. joe louis was truly the best puncher to ever live.
Nobody ever had more chances to gloat or celebrate a tremendous knockout, but he always just turned and strolled to the corner like he had been there before.
he moves kindna like mike tyson when he throws his hooks, althought i think the prime tyson could have gave him problem. Because tyson is always weaving
@rene831 i also like chuck norris but he was a movie star he didnt really fight joe louis dominated heavywieght boxing for 7 years when boxing was at its best
the heavyweight devision was not at its best when joe louis was around . you had ezzard charles and jersey joe and rocky but alot of people judge rockys undefeated streak not as a reflection of his talent but a reflection of the boxing talent around at the time
@jamiedoherty123 it was the best there has been in tht time period through the 1900s to the 60s not jst heavy but all and rocky might have been fed old oppenents but i have watched those fights and the old wallcott was winning until he knocked him out the old fighters he faught would beat a prime klitchko ,a prime haye and give a prime tyson a good fight but joe louis, wallcott, dempsey, johnson, marciano, and more in there prime would beat any boxer from any time period except for ali
i agree with you that the heavyweight devision is in bits at the moment .. there are no great boxers at the moment but the 60s era produced many more boxers like ali frazier patterson henry cooper the list is huge
Could you imagine if Joe Louis was around today with the diet, training , and techniques they have? Plus he was a legendary fighter in his own era. His punching power was unlike anything before or since. One two and guys were out cold.
@intelectify thats a retarded statement. "anyways he did have to make himself look like an uncle tom for them. it's because he couldn't think for himself and stammered" <<<<thats bullshit. i have read plenty of books and watched many documentaries on joe louis life. Joe Louis did have speech impediment but he was not retarded or slow. i dare you call him slow because of a speech impediment. slow ppl can barely function without directional help in said problem. lol @ calling him slow.NO WAY JOSE
The only thing I hate about boxing is all the negativity when people talk about it, I really really really don't understand why I can only find one N word in this thread section and most of it is really concise analytical commentary on boxing and this boxer. IMO Louis is my favorite, there is something about his positioning and movement that makes it indeed seem like the opposite of barbarity.
@sk8forlife90 "normal" people wouldn't have their delts, neck and shoulders built unless they have worked out often and those that have can take a punch easy even in 1st sparring sessions. Sorry but that is how it is.
@sk8forlife90 being an ex pro myself I know that nothing conditions you for that. What you could do to help it is build the muscles around your neck to absorb it more but there is no such thing as being conditioned to an unaware clear cut punch. If you're caught then you're caught, depending how aware you are. Timing etc depends on getting knocked down or not. There's no such thing as conditioning the brain to be knocked about in the skull so often. In fact it makes it worse.
I dont care who you are, if Joe Louis landed that right hand clean, you were out for the count waiting for the sandman. The punch @ 5:34 proves it. LEFT HAND.........Never saw it. Goodnight Mr Bum of the month.
@sk8forlife90, @macwit2cs It's finally good to see a bunch of comments where people don't rip into each other over a disagreement. I boxed myself and it is obvious you either have or followed it pretty well due to the respect you show here. Anyway despite that, I would say boxing today is more of a chess game and filled with technique than back then but back then and before boxers were known to fight until someone got knocked out despite how many rounds. No conditioning can prepare you for that
@2Samuel16seven yeah, though getting punched in the face does condition you to getting hit in the face, i understand what you mean. back in first half of the last century, fighters were mostly all sluggers. today they are much better conditioned and have much better foot work and technique. most of the fighters today if they could go back in time would beat most fighters back then with their kind of gloves on.
@sk8forlife90 I'd disagree, nothing conditions you for getting punched in the face. If your hit pretty square and unaware there is no conditioning to prepare you for that but I agree that most were all sluggers. People think it's about either speed or power or both when in fact those are useless without timing. I feel the timing back then was better (and maybe easier) because it wasn't as fast paced but I also believe if the majority of those boxers were given the training we have, they'd win
@2Samuel16seven Go to Coxcorner. It will explain a lot of things and it will make you seriously question your belief that the oldschool fighters were not as skilled as the fighters today. It actually makes a strong case for the opposite being true and explains why some of the best technical boxers of today (Bernard Hopkins and Floyd Mayweather) are considered throwbacks. Alot of the tricks that Bernard uses to outsmart his younger opponents now a days are very OldSchool.
@MrBIGGAGEE I think you missed the point of my argument. My Argument was to explain that the old school fighters were if anything more skillful than they are today. I never mentioned Manny because he isn't as technical. My point is that the most technical fighters today Hopkins and Floyd are considered throw backs because those techniques originated with the older fighters. Read my entire comment above before you respond.
@sk8forlife90 Simply because they would be faster and stronger too, good timing and with being sluggers and dishing it out as well as taking it, would have the edge over most boxers today. I guess though we'll never know!haha
@2Samuel16seven their are actually quite a few sluggers today. i like watching francisco sierra, he's basically a slugger and a very good one, he's usually on most televised WBO events. and yeah, being a boxer i would know that sparring and getting hit in the face conditions you to get hit in the head. why do you think their able to take so much hits to the head? and normal person would get knocked out almost immediatly.
@2Samuel16seven i dont agree with what u said, boxers back then used the technique 2 knockout there oponent but nowadays most of the trainers and coachs are shit ,,,they dont know old style boxing,,,most of the boxers nowadays throw meaningless punches tht wouldnt hurt a fly ,but i havnt seen 1 video of any boxer from joe louis time ever throw a meaningless punch.
@2Samuel16seven Boxing in the Bombers day was %10 skill %10 conditioning and %80 balls.
I boxed and kick boxed and nothing in the gym can prepare you for what these guys went through. My longest fight was a 8 round kick boxing match and I was sore for 2 months. Guys back in this day fought like you said until someone was dropped and title fights where 15 rounds.
@HillsideFights haha wow you sir, do not know boxing i doubt youve ever even boxed yet you probably will say you did just so you dont look dumb! only basic footwork?? holy fuck thats embarassing you dont see how he slips punches, uses feints, sets up his punches by hitting with the jab then they raise there hands more often so he goes to the body, then gets them thinking body so feints hits with the left hook and how his head rarely goes to the same spot after his punches, how dare you say that!
@HillsideFights Look at 2:06 and see whether it's basic footwork, balance, timing and power. It's phenomenal, and consider just how incredible in real time. It's just that a lot of these old films don't show it clearly. You have to be more aware and more tolerant.
@2Samuel16seven this people have been fightin all their lives i mean it was the 30s 40s 50s the time of the U.S. depresion nothing else need 2 be said
Joe Louis was a Negro Living in a white mans world i do believe he grew up in the segregational times but when he stepped into that ring he unleashed that furry in rage on his oppenents an is why hes one of the best ever he would have beat Mike tyson he would have probably alos either beat lewis or Holyfield as well

Thus making him one of the greatest fighter that ever lived.

godofthisshit 3 months ago
@godofthisshit Unfortunately Joe louis, like Tyson, was victimized more by the people he surrounded himself with. Not only did his people swindle him & use him like a race horse;to make money for their own coffers, they didn't protect him from himself. They weren't looking to advise him on his finances, as they were more concerned with their own. Joe made a lot of money & didn't pay taxes on it, as required. Eventually the govmt considered the good he did during WWII, and excused his tax bill.
lggriffin 3 months ago
@lggriffin
Didn't the IRS go after Joe because he didn't pay taxes on fights he did for charity to raise money or the war efforts? They should have known better. I don't disagree about the rest of what you said.
godofthisshit 3 months ago
@godofthisshit I don't believe so, I think it was the other way around, they ultimately excused him for the good deeds he did; donating his whole purse to charities, and exhibitioning for free for soldiers while he was a soldier, himself, during WWII. He didn't pay taxes on many of the fights he had where he made money, and this is why the IRS went after him.
lggriffin 3 months ago
@godofthisshit did you see the movie American Gangster? its based on a true story about Frank Lucas the harlem drug lord bringing pure heroin straight from the source in vietnam into the u.s. well in the movie joe louis is supposedly in franks night club and he speaks with him and asks joe how much do you owe and joe replies 50,000. so frank just gives it to him and says something like its not a loan its a give consider it a thank you for all that you did in the ring. you think that was real??

sovietjc 6 months ago
It's not a knowable fact that the champions of one era would defeat the champions of another. Having said that, the first thing I notice about Louis is his lack of footwork compared to Ali and many others. For all we know Roy Jones in his prime would have run rings around him. How would Louis have fared against Tyson? He might have made him look silly but can you be certain Tyson wouldn't demolish him? What about Foreman and Lennox Lewis. Did Joe ever face someone that big who was any good?
DwiteTheSpriteKnight 6 months ago
sorry but its a fact the guys today wouldnt handle louis marciano n dempsey, the technique of punches back than n everything else so much better. big guys today put too much emphasis on bulk which is y in my opnion they dont hit as hard, theres no evidence to suggest they do, n being big doesnt help u take a punch better anyway. like freddie roach said, louisd had perfect economy of motion, such a great boxer to study, n like dempsey n the rock, great technique in his punches

2Samuel16seven 9 months ago
@sk8forlife90 being an ex pro myself I know that nothing conditions you for that. What you could do to help it is build the muscles around your neck to absorb it more but there is no such thing as being conditioned to an unaware clear cut punch. If you're caught then you're caught, depending how aware you are. Timing etc depends on getting knocked down or not. There's no such thing as conditioning the brain to be knocked about in the skull so often. In fact it makes it worse.
2Samuel16seven 9 months ago

No conditioning can prepare you for that
2Samuel16seven 10 months ago 15
@2Samuel16seven yeah, though getting punched in the face does condition you to getting hit in the face, i understand what you mean. back in first half of the last century, fighters were mostly all sluggers. today they are much better conditioned and have much better foot work and technique. most of the fighters today if they could go back in time would beat most fighters back then with their kind of gloves on.
sk8forlife90 9 months ago
@sk8forlife90 I'd disagree, nothing conditions you for getting punched in the face. If your hit pretty square and unaware there is no conditioning to prepare you for that but I agree that most were all sluggers. People think it's about either speed or power or both when in fact those are useless without timing. I feel the timing back then was better (and maybe easier) because it wasn't as fast paced but I also believe if the majority of those boxers were given the training we have, they'd win
2Samuel16seven 9 months ago
@2Samuel16seven Go to Coxcorner. It will explain a lot of things and it will make you seriously question your belief that the oldschool fighters were not as skilled as the fighters today. It actually makes a strong case for the opposite being true and explains why some of the best technical boxers of today (Bernard Hopkins and Floyd Mayweather) are considered throwbacks. Alot of the tricks that Bernard uses to outsmart his younger opponents now a days are very OldSchool.
JcLeopard 7 months ago
@JcLeopard MAYWEATHER AND PACMAN AND ALL THE REST OF THE SHIT TODAY COULDNT CARRY THESE GUYS SOCKS
MrBIGGAGEE 6 months ago
@MrBIGGAGEE I think you missed the point of my argument. My Argument was to explain that the old school fighters were if anything more skillful than they are today. I never mentioned Manny because he isn't as technical. My point is that the most technical fighters today Hopkins and Floyd are considered throw backs because those techniques originated with the older fighters. Read my entire comment above before you respond.
JcLeopard 6 months ago
@sk8forlife90 Simply because they would be faster and stronger too, good timing and with being sluggers and dishing it out as well as taking it, would have the edge over most boxers today. I guess though we'll never know!haha
2Samuel16seven 9 months ago
@2Samuel16seven their are actually quite a few sluggers today. i like watching francisco sierra, he's basically a slugger and a very good one, he's usually on most televised WBO events. and yeah, being a boxer i would know that sparring and getting hit in the face conditions you to get hit in the head. why do you think their able to take so much hits to the head? and normal person would get knocked out almost immediatly.
sk8forlife90 9 months ago
@2Samuel16seven i dont agree with what u said, boxers back then used the technique 2 knockout there oponent but nowadays most of the trainers and coachs are shit ,,,they dont know old style boxing,,,most of the boxers nowadays throw meaningless punches tht wouldnt hurt a fly ,but i havnt seen 1 video of any boxer from joe louis time ever throw a meaningless punch.
chrismck100 9 months ago
@2Samuel16seven Totally wrong about technique now and then, i think quite the opposite tbh.
runtinsweet 9 months ago
@2Samuel16seven Boxing in the Bombers day was %10 skill %10 conditioning and %80 balls.
I boxed and kick boxed and nothing in the gym can prepare you for what these guys went through. My longest fight was a 8 round kick boxing match and I was sore for 2 months. Guys back in this day fought like you said until someone was dropped and title fights where 15 rounds.

HillsideFights 4 months ago
@HillsideFights haha wow you sir, do not know boxing i doubt youve ever even boxed yet you probably will say you did just so you dont look dumb! only basic footwork?? holy fuck thats embarassing you dont see how he slips punches, uses feints, sets up his punches by hitting with the jab then they raise there hands more often so he goes to the body, then gets them thinking body so feints hits with the left hook and how his head rarely goes to the same spot after his punches, how dare you say that!
joshuauribe 4 months ago
@HillsideFights Look at 2:06 and see whether it's basic footwork, balance, timing and power. It's phenomenal, and consider just how incredible in real time. It's just that a lot of these old films don't show it clearly. You have to be more aware and more tolerant.
