Maybe the claws were for something else other than defence e.g. stripping foliage or slashing through dense forest. I know it's only a CGI interpretation but the ability to use its forearms to defend itself is not very convincing, to me it looks like a big goose with a Freddy Kreugor glove trying to fight off a two legged crocodile. Surely they would be too heavy to swing in combat?

The raptors in Jurassic Park were modeled after their larger cousins Deinonychus. However their portrayal was also inacurate, as Deinonychus is covered in feathers, like the birds, and their stance is lower to the ground. I think the dino that comes closest to raptors in JP is allosaur

If they simply liked the word "raptor" they could have used Utahraptor, they were huge for a Dromaeosaur.

And as for the feathers, I don't think that was proved or even known at the time the films (at least the first one/s) were made.

@KonvictRAT This is the actual size of Velociraptor. What Jurassic Park calls "Velociraptors" are pretty much just naked Deinonychus (They are naked because both Deinonychus and Velociraptor are believed to have had feathers.)

In my opinion, Therizinosaurus was an omnivore. Those claws are just to big and too powerful to be used for simply stripping leaves from bark. It probably would have used them to attack smaller dinosaurs or defend against larger predators like this Tarbosaurus.

This documentary was made in like 2003. Velociraptor up to that point only "theoretically" had feathers. It wasn't until around 2005 that a raptor skeleton with fossilized feathers was found.

Yeah. They actually were pretty small though. He'd have a decent chance against one or two. The ones from jurassic park were actually based on a different raptor-like dinosaur but they thought velociraptor sounded cooler.

Actually Deinonychus was about four feet compared to Velociraptors three feet. The movie raptors were six feet. It was more or less movie magic applied o them. However ironically as soon as the movie hit theaters, Utahraptor was found and it matched the size of the movie Velociraptors perfectly.

My knowledge of Dinosaurs is limited so I'll take your word on this and I'm sure bigger size was applied for the sake of being more appealing in the movie. After all, movies are notorious for bending the truth aren't they? :P

That's actually how much the scientists estimated. Dilophosarus was estimated to be about half a on when fully grown.
