@RobDerbyCollege What kind of harmony are we talking? I think the first well-known pianist to use different harmonies for standards was probably Bill Evans.
It falls somewhere between Ritchie Beirach and Cecil Taylor. I would pay to hear it live, but you'll never sell it to a non-musician audience in a Lady Gaga world...
I can't agree more with Raydo612...You are a real ear openner my friend. Have you published something of this stuff? I have checked the chromatic aproach of Dave Liebman but i like this far better!
I meant it as a play on words. Instead of a re-harmonization it is a de-harmonization because I purposely tried to avoid the "normal" harmony and explored some dissonant options.
I like your chords position... do there's a daily exercice for the left hand?.... i mean something for to learn all these positions? I'm trying to list your position from all your videos but it's not easy.... could you do it?
thanks for posting Mr. Friedman...my dad and i have enjoyed your posts...as a beginning student, i've recently started to appreciate dissonance...the other interpretation of this classic tune i've grown to love is chick corea's version from his akoustic band album...thanks again for your time and effort
certainly deharmonized ... what is the familiar standard ... its nothing i recognize, but it sounds great, very mentally stimulating to listen to ... very good.
Another great clip. This definitely works and as far as not being everyones cup tea. Well let me get another cup of this southern sweet tea.... a Very Cool Concept indeed. Let me got to the bull pen and practice
Seriously...in some part of this music, I see perfect suitable as a scene in a movie film or cartoon.
I love the pause at 00:45, it make's me smile, because I recalled a scene of the pink panther. Here in all youtube there are not enough stars to define this amazing great work.
I cannot think of any other recording of this tune that goes as far out as you do. The harmonies are very sophisticated. They shouldn't "fit", but they lay in place perfectly. Also your sync with the backing track gives the illusion that you are leading the trio, not the other way around. This is major skill that comes from all of your trio/group work. Bravo! *****
Cup of tea eh? I can say it's a fun way of playing. Also good exercise as you say. Truly a breath of fresh air and authentic to your playing (suits McCoy) :)
This is very interesting system De-Harmonization. A cue that sure also helps to make various creative lines. I like it, this nice and very complex. Many Stars

is this a different technique to reharmonisation?

@homePicShow1 similar except trying to purposely create more dissonance.

Are there any famous pianists who play standards and use non-typical harmony a lot? (and sound good)
