im an artist :D. its called putty-rubber. its like a shapeable rubber that can be shaped to your likeing, its useful for blending tone.

Actually that rubber thing is called a rubber eraser and it is used because it doesn't leave easer flecks and can be molded so that only the area you want erased is erased
