Awesome fish, but it might be worth remembering that The World Record for a Blue Fin Tuna is lbs 1,496 (or roughly 680 Kgs) caught off Nova Scotia in 1979, according to the IGFA (and they should know !!).
DNA have proven that these Northern Pacific Bluefin tuna are a species of their own off the west coast of NZ. which on occasions SBfin tuna do mix with briefly as their season runs into each other.
I did take sometime for the IGFA to recognize this species
They don't get sold as they have NO commercial value..the season runs mid August to maybe mid sept...It's not yet known how big these puppies get. although I don't think quite as big as 680kg's..now that indeed sir is a tuna
Could you plese write to the IGFA and tell they have made a mistake and I'll get the angler to send back his shiny IGFA world Record certificate back to them.
@Kurtfromnz ACTUALLY I THOUGHT ID DO A LITTLE RESEARCH ON PACIFIC BLUE FIN OF YOUR IGFA SITE AND IT CLEARLY SAYS (716 lb 8 oz) Westport , New Zealand 8/26/2007 Steve McCowan
But I'm not that impressed. The hardest part of a tuna battle is the last 100 feet of the fight. It is apparent that the boat played a huge part of this catch...
Also, the crew handlined the fish to the boat for the last 50 feet. Not that sporting in my opinion..
Try fishing for giant yellowfin from an anchored boat with 25 other passengers using standup gear.. That is the ultimate.. not this..
I have just finished a short film about the Portugese Tuna Industry - their version of the Matanza was the Almadrava (a net trap). The film shows the original footage of the fish (15 foot) but now the tuna industry has died in Tavira. Click on my ID now or type "Giant Tuna Run - Tavira Portugal"
WOW. I dont know what is more upseting. The fact I couldn't be there to just see something amazing like that or the fact it's been 4 months (from this post) and no one has anything to say. Let me say congrats on a GIANT tuna
Any way you look at it, that's a lot of sushi....

Why don't you fish like a real fisherman and stop the boat instead of towing the fish behind it for 20 miles and wearing it out?

I think you meant to say 330 lbs, not 330 kg.

pacific and atlantic bluefins are genetically identical ie the same species,so its kinda not the world record
johnfish1 3 years ago
Sorry John but the IGFA think it kinda is a world record.
The Japanese know the difference to these Pacific Bluefin are worthless (50cent a pound)in Japan.

This Bluefin Tuna has just been ratified in the last week, as the new 130lb and all tackle world record by the IGFA in Florida.

october 07, whats happened to the 316kg tuna that was caught by, falcon northshore boy, who knows?
blackkiwiguv 3 years ago
A lot of the record claims have missed out because the boats didn't fish to of didn't know the I.G.F.A regs (tackle and angling).
The "TE Ariki Nui" is going back down there this year chasing the lighter tackle records.
Kurtfromnz 3 years ago
660lb is the all tackle world record for pacific blues? anyone know Atlantic's? must be around 1200ish right?
