  • Don't like. Because the guitar doesn't even seem to be in tune, it's just metalstrings flapping around. You should play some chords or even melodies, oh, and harmonics, natural an false ones! That would be way more interesting to see, especially because you could really see intervalls by looking on how frequent the strings vibrate.

  • lol.. i could imagine strings in drop tunings...

  • I've always wanted to see a cymbal being lathed in slow motion

  • nice camera...POS guitar

  • I just created a music video using a similar technique on a super large bariton 12-string. Awesome effect! Do a search for "Mike Salovich magic guitar strings" to find the video.

  • it looks untuned

  • I think it funny that your using a cheap guitar with a missing string for this.

  • you should use higher shutter speed.

  • @Keskusrikospoliisi It probably would have helped. I was just using indoor lighting so cranking up the shutterspeed with the limited light probably would have made it too dark.

  • @taofledermaus not a good reason =D then you should get more light. 1/8000 is good speed

  • Wait, does this camera record sound at an equally slow rate as well?

  • @hermanessences The camera doesn't record sound when operating in high speed mode.

  • great video and great music too

  • Great idea

  • I watched this last nite and got dizzy LOL.......I was feeling like crap though :( Looks cool tonite :) Back ground music most soothing too!

  • I watched this last nite and got dizzy LOL.......I was feeling like crap though :( Looks cool tonite :)

  • Harmonics in slow motion. Awesome!

  • Very cool!

  • That's amazing. I play guitar, and I never knew there was that much movement in the strings.

  • ... Where's the 6th string, guys?

Where is it? What did you do to it?

  • Not to detract from this video (it's awesome), but there's some more high speed footage of guitars on the TimeWarp episode featuring Metallica. You can see all kinds of cool stuff like octave vibrations, for anyone else who's interested in seeing more.

  • nicely shot!!

  • taofledermaus, If you tune that guitar and you play two strings which are an octave appart you will see that one vibrates at exactly double the frequency. Or two octaves appart, e.g. the two strings at the ends, one will vibrate four times faster.

  • very interesting, thanks!

  • Next time tune it properly before you shoot... some of those are waaaaaay too loose. Cool vid.

  • Kewl.

  • now only if you could get video of one string snapping :P

  • Thanks :)

  • I wonder if a violin has any visible vibration. Obviously if you plucked it but with a bow that would be interesting.

  • @GENeric110100100 Ah, I bet there would be. I'd probably need a macro lens and I'm not sure if my camera would be fast enough to see the faster vibrations.

  • @taofledermaus check out kipkays video on how to make a macro lens your self if you dont want to buy one

  • @taofledermaus I've played violin a couple years and I can tell you: Violin string-vibrations are visable for sure, especially the deeper chordes. Doing it with a bow is also no problem, it depends on how much colophonium your bow has and how much you press it. I'm not sure if you are able to film the higher ones with your regular objective, but it's worth to try it out.

  • idk about violin but my cello vibrations are visible to the naked eye so i bet it could be picked up with this camera

  • Now we just need a shot of the Phonons!

  • interesting video...

  • i can see the comments now - "why are the strings so loose?" -- "so it would look cooler!"

  • @NaplesSwampRat They weren't that loose. I didn't tune it or anything.

  • thank you so much for doing this!! its epic!!! i always wondered what the strings looked like super slow. lol

  • @Mattguitarman1234 Glad you liked it!

  • I have a question tao why does the quality degrade as the film gets slower?

  • @iClient The resolution is smaller the faster you set the camera. Ultraslo's MIro 4 camera does the same thing, when he cranks up the FPS the images become smaller and smaller. If you take a small image and enlarge it, the quality degrades pretty fast.

  • This was sweet!!!

You should try filming it from one end looking down the neck of the guitar, that way you'll be able to see the oscillation of the string :)

  • @Spetsop I tried a few shots like that but the shots came out lousy because of the field of view and the small light I was using couldn't get everything bright enough.

  • That's not slow ENOUGH!

  • What camera did you use? How much was it? I want to film insects using predatorial skills to catch prey. thanks

  • @xDeAdlYSp1Derx I use a Casio EX-F1. They don't make it anymore but you can find used ones on Ebay once in a while. (Casio makes other models too)

  • @taofledermaus thanks alot

  • shot it from the neck!!!!

  • we gotta get fire and flames guitarist in 1200 fps lol

  • get a shot of the strings looking up the neck so you can see the wave travel

  • Yeah that would be great. I always wanted to see if there are visible wavepackets or if its more like a standing wave. A video of a hole vibrating string between it's fixation points would be great.

    Still awesome work.

  • Thats awesome because this is exactly what i'm studying in physics.

  • @aderonn Cool! I hope it helps!

  • This is so weird, being a guitar player.

    :D

  • @masonrox2547

lol I was thinking just the same when I was watching it

  • i would like to see a close up of you blowing soap bubbles, and see them form from the hoopy thing. i dont know know what its called, that stick you dip in the soap and blow, yeah that thing lol. it would be neat to see the bubbles form from that in slow motion! :D

  • They move so strangely...

  • Awesome!!!

It's weird because it isn't like a smooth vibration, it goes to the trough of the wave and then snaps to the top... repeat.

    Thanks :D

You should do that to a subwoofer next!

  • @ExpertOfSound I really do want to do that. I filmed a sub before but it was an old, crappy one and wasn't that exciting. Thanks for stopping in!

  • @ExpertOfSound im into audio ad i know filming a subwoofer would eb stupid u can just play lower frequencys and it lokk be slowmo looking in real time but thats a good idea if u wanted to play high freqencys

  • @BassPounderX

Well, the thing I was wondering about with subwoofers, is how much the cone "wobbles" because of it being, for example, an insanely small amount off center like 0.0001mm.

    :D

  • @ExpertOfSound i geuss it would only wobble if it has handleing to much power or the cone wasnt very stiff like on cheap paper cones

  • @BassPounderX

    Yea probably.

But I want to test it and see! :D

  • @ExpertOfSound The strings are probably hitting the fretboard because he snapped them vertically like a noob.

  • Nice music and cool vid!

  • Kinda scary ):

  • Neat

  • dude thats awesome!

  • Awesome!
