Stellar playing, Tomo! One of my all time fave tracks (Peacock recording, of course). I have a few old Duo Sonics like yours. A '62 in tan, but i think body was left over late 50's - it's super-lightweight & also has traces of Desert Sand under Tan. It's my go-to guitar @ home. '61 Siena Burst in better shape, but just doesn't have same resonance in wood & not broken in the same. '63 w beautiful flamey maple neck but frets very worn. Exc jazz chords in the is song. Would love to learn it all.
this is not an easy song to play. Gatemouth was a master at subtle interaction as this song show's. I am a fan of Hollywood Fat's version, along with Ronnie EArl which is quite different however his will stand the test of time. A local cat "Josh Miller" kills it too!
I'm really interested in buying a Classic Vibe (the reissue), but I'm nervous about the twangy, thin sound. Any advice about cool pups to replace the stock pickups? I have some Fat 50s from another project (middle and bridge only - the neck is still in my Strat). Do you think they'd work okay with a Duo Sonic?
@gromshit101- A: not everyone likes the sound of Gibsons or humbuckers. B: Gibson has worse quality control than Fender AND Gibsons are way overpriced.
@billgrant1999 Thank you so much! While I am playing ... I leave my brain somewhere.... so you should learn whatever you like.. then figure it out! Could be from chords.... you want to have a few choices.
Thanks so much for posting this. It has taken me the better part of a week, but your video, along with a great video showing Mike Morgan doing this song at The Pearl in Dallas (key of D) with Anson Funderburgh have helped me learn a great song I have wanted to perform for years! Great chords for the horn parts. You are a gifted player and it is great that you post this stuff to help others learn. Good guitar karma! Thanks again!
Thank you! I wanted to play this way. I heard the band(or back band) in my head. I made this for my students so they follow the transcription and chords.
Hi,Tomo, still nice play,Duo Sonic is another model of mustang?I like mustang and Jaguar's look, but Jaguar's bridge have some mistake.I want to buy a Fender japan mustang.
Thanks! Duo Sonic ll from 1965...is similar to Mustang. but these Duo Sonics from 1956-1964 ... those are a bit shorter scale than Mustang or Duo Sonic ll.
When you play the blues... I recommend to play a few notes first, like ... this case (Key of Eb) so pick 5th, 6th Root on Eb.
Those are called "common tone" It sounds great over Eb7, or Ab7... and please listen to B.B. King " Live at the Regal" "Blues is king" cds. First listen these for 6 months.
The only time I saw a Fender Duo Sonic played live is when Sonic Youth played in Manila. Between moshing and crowdsurfing breaks. I was there on front admiring those guitar. Thurston Moore brought a lot of these Duo Sonic played in alternative tunings and swaped another one after each song.
The Fender Duo Sonic was a stock student guitar made by Fender from about 1958 until the introduction of the Fender Mustang around 1963. You can check eBay and find them from time to time.. I have a vintage Blonde with Original Case in my Collection
My Duo Sonic was a PreCBS. At the time, I found it was tough to adjust and to keep it in tune. Nice little guitar. If I can find another one, I,LL buy it!
I'd love to have a Duo Sonice but sadly it is impossible to find a left handed one. I thought I'd try Fender Japan as they do more left handed guitars than Fenders USA or Mexican plants (I obtained a left-handed Jazzmaster this way and a left-handed thinline Telecaster) but no luck there and I don't want to butcher a right-handed one.
I was most impressed by the tone and playing in this excerpt - way beyoung my meager skills though :)
Golden Triangle music alumni! Cool! Yes, I used to see the Winter Bros and Jerry "Count Jackson" LaCroix at The Big Oak in Vinton. Great music scene. I still have Boogie King albums. "Gatemouth" passed away in Orange too I think.
thanks there is a duo-sonic at a pawn shop near me and I wanted to hear one played on an amp before buying. it is a 22.5" scale so I was worried, but if it can sound like that I think I am set
Great rendition of a guitar classic. Composed by Pluma Davis, guitar solo by Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, first recorded in 1954. Many thanks! PS- I saw the Pluma Davis Orchestra live in about 1962, w/ Bobby Bland singing. Wonderful!
Bobby Bland w/ Pluma Davis played this dance at the National Guard Armory in my hometown of Port Arthur, TX (also Janis Joplin's hometown). About 10-12 black musicians, from Houston, TX. Very jazzy-bluesy, super players. Great memories!--Ed
Okie dokie stomp is Clarence "gatemouth" Brown born in Orange Texas, played on some of the Bobby Bland's "Two Steps from the blues and "call on me" albums from the early 60's. I am from Beaumont and heard Bobby Bland at the Mecca club in 1962 in Nederland Tx. I played with Johnny and Edgar winter from 1959 to '65 and at the big oak club with Edgar and Jerry Lacroix in 1961-62.
Sorry for my late reply. Thank you so much for your notes! I really appreciate it. What a experience you had!!! I am honored that you heard me playing. Thank you very much!
