In general, most trance will mellow out. Hard trance is specified by the synths add energy and how the track will get you worked up as opposed to relaxed or calm like progressive, uplifting, or airwave does.

They have hardstyle backrounds, so their hardtrance sounds much more aggressive, whereas artist's like Faithless have a more Techno feel. Hard trance is basically a way to describe any track that has the energy from Techno or Hardstyle but is rooted in trance. Trance is meant to be euphoric, but now days it can also be energetic.
