  • dj bassist

  • I thought this was Antoine Dodson playing bass

  • why haven't John Frusciante and Doug Wimbish gotten together yet?

  • what is that blue guitar at 2:15 ?

  • I think I saw this on netflix

  • @dylankickyoazz nothing wrong with guitar. I happen to play bass, drums and guitar, and by saying guitars r the "wrong instrument" is ignorant on ur part. We guitar players can't hold the band down like u do alone, and I respect that. We need u. But check out Prince. He's a brilliant bass player, and an amazing guitar player. In an R&B, Funk, hip hop, and blues setting, he has to hold himself down, and his guitar playing is like the roof that's like insurance for his grooves. Prince is a legend.

  • "bass is easy its just the bottom 4 strings from the guitar in a lower octive." straight from a guy in my guitar class last year. gtfo bass haters

  • @dylankickyoazz no shit, i love it when a guitarist says its easy to play bass

  • glamour boys is awesome bass...i think that was the other guy though

  • Pistons are they from detroit?

  • Funny how this video has 139,608 views.. And the most moronic content has over 1 million. Real sad.

  • 0:27-0:29

    WHOA...WTF!

  • is Doug the the Original bass player for Living Colour

  • @rhysdbeast5 It was Muzz Skillings.

  • This teaches almost nothing. Nice bass tone tho

  • Is that a Lakland bass? x

  • Man this dudes got amazing control

  • . the code wont even work!

  • YAY he taught me how to play drums with a bass!!!

  • ah he slappin da BASS!

    HOOTIE HOO!

  • is a lakland

  • Is he the original bassist for Living Colour?

  • No. The Original Bassist is Muzz Skilings. Doug joined in 1993 If I'm not mistaken

  • no it was Muzz Skillings, equally as talented

  • ya he usually plays spector but the maple neck axe is an Ibanez, (u can tell by the bridge and headstock) - he did have an ibanez signature axe too

  • love the slap. but the sound is somehow too mellowish :/

  • Wimbish is a great player. Too bad he's wearing that horrible Pistons jersey...yikes! ;-p

Anyway, I thought the rockhouse series was long dead. Guess not!

  • Damn I could barely hear it on this small laptop speakers.

  • What kind of bass is he playing,is it a Ibanez soundgrear ?

  • I read somewhere he uses Spector.

  • Spector is the main brand he plays, but this one is an Ibanez

  • Not sure when this was made but Doug had a signature Ibanez soundgear back in '99-2000 but now uses Spector. These guys are on the level, very approachable, I had the pleasure on meeting them in the Uk a couple months back.

  • yeah, this is his own model.

  • CARVIN.

  • Yeah, HammondB200 is right, the bass he's playing in this video is a Spector, not sure which model though....

  • Ibanez

  • yup im playin bass for a few bands right now and having switched from guitar recently it kinda concreted the direction i was going in practice. im also working on my high end fills and runs...tie the guitars n with the drums

  • Nice little demo!

  • this is such a helpfull vid. i been playing 3 years but just joined my first band, and in 3 min, this guy explained it all

  • i have never seen some one do something that sick before

  • Excellent little video! It is always said how slaps and pops go with the bass drum and snare, but in this video you really hear how well they fit together. Thanks guys!

  • This one is much more useful: watch?v=IHE6hZU72A4

  • You are right. In Jazz the bass is usually more prominent than the guitar even. In funk, progressive, and jam band the bass is the heart of the music.

  • que bueno lo que hace este tipo

  • Do bass players have roles?

  • for those who gave my reply 2 thumbs down, that was a joke

    I respect bass players

    don't take it that seriously

  • sometimes cinnamon roles w/ coffee

  • Yeah man, so the drummer and guitarist qualify for the carpool lane.

  • So if hot chicks show up with an ugly friend everyone goes home happy, except the bassist

  • I thought the bass player's role was to teach the guitarist all the musical theory that he/she never bothered to learn.

  • LOLLL so true!!!!! My guitar player friend has been playing for 6 years but doesn't know any music theory.

  • Funny, I find it's the other way around, and i play bass

  • amem dude

  • CAching! OWNED! Very true lol

  • Course my role as the lead guitarist is to teach our bassist how to play his damn instrument. *sigh*

  • typical lead guitar player, sigh!

  • lolin my band they say the bass volume needs to be below the guitar and the drums and is called background music

    WTF

  • tell your band that the bass is a very important part in any type of music. It has to be hear by everybody.

  • @lesclaypoolsob XD no thats the drummers job XD

  • @lesclaypoolsob i sure can sympathise with that..

  • @lesclaypoolsob Best reply on youtube EVER!

  • I do sometimes.. kind of

  • 00:27 what da hell was that? 0_0!! how to do?

  • he switched on an envelope filter and scratched his strings

  • Lmao nice

  • @dragonzith

    That was an Envelope Filter

  • This excellent groove calls for a dancing chick to be used in the vid.

Erika Eleniak should be dancing in a thong in front of you guys while jammin.

  • ahh, insightful indeed, i am buying a bass tomorrow!

  • Cool - was Will in Living Color?

  • yeah, and the bassist here is too

  • you need to get into the "wood shed" and work together. or get a new drummer

  • Will calhoun is probably one of the top 5 drummers in the world, Everyone and I mean every one across genres seek to work with him. What you don't get is that in this video he is not here to lay it on, he is lending support sof Doug can give the lesson.

    Amazing how little you understand!

  • that is any bass player in any musical setting

  • not always...

  • For me (a long time drummer) I feel that the bass player ties the drums to the melody. He bridges the gap between percussion and melody. Thus, creating the rhythm section.

  • Ryanvbon "Whats the point of that ?" its called the GROOVE not enough players value this. Obviously your one of them that doesnt.

  • You said it dude. Some people think the only way to play an instrument is to be a shredder. Sometimes simplicity makes a song a great song.

  • Doug always says, it is what you don't play that makes the difference. MUSIC NEEDS SPACE!! that is an old school rule!

  • @therockhouse i'm a brass player and one of my teachers AAALLLLWAYS got on our case about "playing the space", ESPECIALLY when we were playing funk tunes.

  • I agree with ChristmasTreeBandit. Anyone remember "Give It Away" by the Chili Peppers? And Audioslave's "Like a Stone"? Two simple bass lines, two amazing songs

  • Hes like Tom Morello just on bass!

  • Tight with the drummer is what it's all about. I'd like to see his advanced stuff.

  • 32 seconds.will callhull, has the funniest face at the guitar player after he used the wah

  • the bass is the most important instrument. it controls the harmony and timing. the drums are suppose to follow the bass

  • MUY BUENO!!

  • alright i understand the whole lock in to the drummer ideal, but what if u have a poo drummer? that is when its good for a bassist to lock into the pre-existing groove, so that the other band members can still hear at least a bass beat when the drummer has his/her occasional brain farts

  • good point. Thing is lol Living Colour are incredibly well educated and talented musicians to go !

  • owsom dude!! you play owsom!!

  • wtf??? you're just doing what the drummer did.............whats the point of that???

  • the point is that the lesson is on locking in with the drummer. It is the bassist job to help hold the band together!

  • You'd be surprised at the number of 'bass players' NEED this kind of lesson!

  • The Bass is like a drum with pitch, think of it like that. of course playing stuff other than the beat is not forbidden but its a good place to start

  • yeah i know it.. these douches in this comment box are stupid.. its called playing against the drum beat and thats why these poles are gonna stay in simple land cause they play on top of the drummer

  • it beafs up the rhythm no end. not enough bass players know it.

  • @Ryanvbon asshole

  • @Ryanvbon the bass guitar is the rhythmic and harmonic linchpin within the framework of a band. The groove is where it’s at....but that in no way is to suggest that there isn’t the capability for creativity or expression.

  • I tried to do that thing he does at :27 during a jam one time. My drummer looked at me in disgust lol

  • you're not Doug Wimbish

  • Awesome, simple lesson, good stuff

  • clever

  • man u make the bass look cool

  • Wats that meant to mean!?

  • the bass is cool ¬¬

  • he is good

  • check out my bass groovees

  • at around 0:28...how does he do that!?

  • i was wondering that too lol

  • wah pedal maybe?

  • He scratches the round wound strings with his thumbnail.

  • Yeah, I was like "OWTF?!?!? COOL!"

  • at 0:28 its really simple. Im guessing he uses wah and maybe a couple other effects but definitly wah then he rattles the string against the fretboard

  • sounds like an envelope filter to me.

  • i love the color of those fingers. <3

  • choco mocha caramel with a little cream

  • Great playin' man. I'm just a "get by" bass player. I been playin' the guitar for 43 yrs and the bass every once in a while. But I do enjoy hearing someone like you that really knows what they're doin' on a bass.

  • I Like it....
