Hey everyone, I have written a FREE full length enovel as a way to spread awareness about myself as an author. I have made a promo video for it on my youtube channel so please come check out the vid, give it a big thumbs up and get yourself a copy by following the smashwords link in the description. Thank you!
Can someone please explain to me, why the f*** are ereaders are so expensive. I just want to read a damn book my God, all they need to do is put a 8GB stick of HDD memory (5$), cheap $6 production cost processor and a cheap backlight and make it support pdf's.
If you're asking why have an ereader if you can have a book, 1 you can carry (a thousand) more books on an ereader than in your hands, 2 you can get a pdf file of anything, novel, science text book, etc on the internet (tpb) for free.
It would be nice if we could have text-books on here, that way students won't have to carry around so many books. When I was still in high school last year, I noticed that some of the younger kids were carrying bags around half their size (and probably weight, too).
@Smiddimizer How is being able to get and carry a nearly unlimited number of classics from Project Gutenberg for free redundant? An ebook reader of any sort is a wonderful thing.
I have many criticisms about this video! 1: Crappy intro song; 2: Woman with lesbian hair cut and way outdated prom tux; 3: 0:19 <--- An Indian reading in a library? (Continued)
•it is as resistant as a book (meaning falling down, water and heat differences etc. won't harm it)
•it has failsafe software, failsafe memory and a very long lasting battery (months).
With such a technology, I wouldn't feel a need for books any more. Until then...let's not rely on it too heavily. Digital data decays with time, as we know.
This is a fantastic product ! Great for college students, the everyday business man or women thats always on the city beat ! After using this product for 21 days you will be hooked.

@tissetatten I'm able to change my view by changing 75% to 100% or a different number... Check if you can that see that one (how many percent it is)... Normally my pdf files are set on 75% when I open them.. so its more about changing it back to normal than anything else... If you can't ask someone who can see the file... then try copying and pasting the text into word/office or similar (might not be possible) and then changing the size... (and then saving as pdf or just reading there...

NO!!!!!! When I heard about this electronic lump of junk, I cried for three hours straight, and THAT is REALLY hard to make me do! My face gets scrunched up at just the thought. What would reading be without the smell of a new book? The ability to read late at night without your parents knowing(the stupid light would shine through your door and they would know)? Just plain disturbing. I rely on books for a way from the real world. A way to calm myself down when I am sad.
It's not for everyone, but I did buy one for my daughter. She travels constantly and also is an avid reader...because she very often travels by foot and backpack this is perfect. For years she has carried up to 10 books in her back pack at any given time, and this is just heaven for her. So I agree...there is nothing like the smell of a new book, but for some lifestyles this reader will be perfect!
lol You're an idiot. Number 1, who cares about the smell of a new book. Number 2, THERE IS NO LIGHT, other than the lamp that you have to turn on if it's dark. So it's the EXACT same thing as reading a regular book at night. Number 3, you use it to escape the real world and calm yourself. Well that has NOTHING to do with the physical book itself, but the story inside the book!! LMFAO One of the most moronic comments I have ever read.
The price isn't really the issue for me, though it would be nice if it /they were cheaper. The main issue for me, is the availability of books for the device. I would hate to think that exclusive rights deals are made with publishers; which will exclude other books being made available for it. This would mean you would either have to buy more than one device, or still buy the paper version rendering the whole purpose a bit pointless. The device should be neutral.
I was thinking of getting one of those ebook readers, just a simple one that holds like 512mb which is enough to hold a few hundred books because these are text files we're talking about... but damn for some odd reason things cost more than ITouches hah so forget that... that sort of blew me away like why are these 512mb text display ebook readers not like $50 hah... oh well. regular books it is
Philips, Polymer Vision, iRex. all companies who really innovated these devices. However as usual these dutch firms are incapable to market their products properly, as a consequence it are the japanese who will be making the big bucks from these type of products while other firms were first.
Sure, the Amazon Kindle is really Japanese. Polymer Vision did not work on an ereader device but with foldable screens. And what about the Philips-spin-off Liquavista, now targeting on ebook readers as well?

Screening vs reading?? Okay, then the same can be said about CD's vs cassettes vs LP's, VHS vs DVD, keyboards vs typewriters, television vs attending the live event, analog vs digital PERIOD. This isn't new, it's been going on since the the transistor was invented. even your brain is a wireless device that can accomodate any data stream, thus it's capacity of the spawning of such technology - though, with evolution comes pollution.
i thought about this ebook reader before most people even gave it a thought.. Well if you look at star trek, you had the whole universe of books at your fingertips,
the only point of buying that if you read alot and you could have the whole world library in your pocket. I have over six hundred thousand books on couple of 20gig flash cards which i can plug right into the ebook. Where i got the books? I got em long before anyone ever though that theres gonna be ebook readers, so i guess i knew what was coming...
These are great, but the technology needs to get a bit better. It would be awesome if you could read magazines or newspapers on it. If you don't ever read though, then I guess it wouldn't be very useful.
you can download ebooks and read them on the reader instead on your computer or buying them at the store.. and u can take it everywhere with you.. its smaller than a book + you can have many books in it.
You're a stupid asshole. You could've just said, "Too expensive for me" not make that smart assed remark like it's overpriced or some bullshit. God damn
Yes, if you like reading but you dont like to hold a huge book in your hands all the time, and if you want to carry many books at the same time you can have the Ebook
I want that so bad! It would be so awesome to carry all my favourite books with me everywhere...! Maybe I'll let it slip to the rents for my birthday--and you can download textbooks onto it as well!
I enjoyed your video, If you need help getting your video exposed i use a service at Tubeviews . Net They offer views, ratings, and comments. They helped my video get ranked on the first page
Listen to computer voice is like listen a math teacher, BORING. There is no expression at all, and make you not understand. So yeah a soft that read the book for you could be nice, but not for a novel.
Well I find the voice very helpful and not boring.
This shows that opinion of boring is based upon personal biases. And that in order to benefit from anything we need to have an open mind to see how to do things differently than the limitations our limited knowledge and experience has put forward to be believed as facts by our unconscious mind.
I can listen to at least half a book or more each week as part of using MP3 while I travel, shop, etc.
If you decide a voice is boring that is your loss.
Though with over 30 years of computer experience, I can tell you electronic voices these days are very well done. Not the windows default, the bought one's like from AT&T, such as Audrey which has the British accent.
But people seem to hate things based upon little effort to adapt. Some just don't know how good they have it, unless they have contrast.
In life I have found that some ppl will find fault with anything and everything. Such ppl are happily miserable with seeing nothing is perfect.
These things are ridiculous. Books are so much better.. I love going into book stores and libraries and just seeing them on shelves, the smell of them. I like paper. Books arent supposed to be digital, and Im a gadget guy but these Sony readers and Kindles are sooo stupid
Very nice video and understanding. On my website I have online texting for free to use. Also I have text growth blog talks about mobile phones. Just go to my profile.
It can only do one thing; but it's better to that do one thing right. At present, mobile phones and laptops are inadequate solutions for portable book reading.
its pretty cool, but i like having my big collection of books that i can actually see. i would like to have a decent sized personal library one day. i do think its pretty cool tho.
Sorry, but english isn't my national language, beside I was in a rush :P It probably looks ridiculous to you. How many languages do you speak? English only :P ? Or maybe you've never done mistake?
@blameasia honestly - never heard of fast readers? Read through the fourth HP book in 5 hours (or less) the first time I read it.. The more you read the faster it goes... several other factors that can also play a part in it- >just to clarify that....
The ebook reader sounds interesting.. seems better than the usual readers... would need to try though... Would at least mean less weight (read 'books') when traveling....
First of all I read one book a day as well, however I can also comprehend the book and garner any grammatical insight from it in one day as well. You however, simple can't.
Well, I am not from US or UK so english isn't my native language. And yes, I have problems with writing, I know that. Is 400 pages short? I' still in high school, I don't need a job. I understand that when you have many responsibilities you have less free time but still one book a week XD ...
don't get this one go with the amazon kindle it's all-around better and lets you surf the web! It also costs 50$ less, so it's an all-around better buy!
Well, I heard this SONY model has a special LCD such that we can read it even under sunshine. I will doubt whether your $50 Chinese product will have such a good LCD.
I believe the eReader reads BBeB formats....not sure what "other" formats there are. I have tried to read some PDF formats, but it's not perfect because I can only zoom to medium.
its that much because u can keep reading for a month or so with out rechargin, if u dont do anything else of course, like watch media, or listen to music...
I love the concept, and I'd totally get it... if it wasn't for the price.
I mean, my PSP can do the same thing (I can take screen shots of PDF's, or scan my own book, and save it as .jpegs to "read"), and it costed me a fraction of Sony's e-reader (350USD?! Holy SMOKES!)!
I'm definitely not bashing the product, it does appeal to certain people--especially those that are always on the move. I'm simply skeptical of its mainstream appeal due to pricing issues.
TOTALLY agree, unless you are really going to read, this thing would be expensive and useless. I have one, but I bought mine for under $100 USD becasue they were making room for the second version ($299). It is extremely expensive at retail price, but I love it!
I'd prefer technology provide solutions that *are* the most natural thing in the world rather than having to adapt myself and "get used" to something that isn't optimal.
no books are not free "legally" but they can be downloaded if you know where to look. I have more books then I would every read, currently working on the 3rd Jumper book.
with this for all u pplz waitin for the end of the world, u can carry and read your 1000 page bible and 300 page "building and ark for dummies" at the same time, so ull have more time actually building one... :)
u can carry one book, but can u carry all the books, magazines and newspapers in the world? I dont thing so, but with this little gadget u will, with free internet excess.well for right now they have about 40000 titles and 10000 magazines and other writings.
1. I travel ALOT and internet access is sporadic at best.
2. I need an e book reader becoause I read fast. on average a book every 3-4 days. I read on the bus, at the gym, while I eat and once on a 19 hour flight with a very long layover I completed 3 novels and 2 trashy, cheesey romance novels. (which are my all time favorite)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Good lord.... I knew that the world was going to hell, but when people are just too lazy to carry a book!! A fucking book!!! I've lost all faith in humanity.
Its not about carrying a book, but getting them. Also we live in an era of eco thinking, so what is better, to print all the books or just read them in e form? If I had to print all the books Id like to read from for ex. project guthenberg, Id waste really much paper:)
yeah u would but we have to think of what will happen to books. . i mean its only only the writers who write the books but also publisers and agents and page designers and all kind of people who live from the book industry... if this continues any one would be able to get an Isbn numr and give his book for sale online then boom!= book industry lost!!!
I have now for almost a half a year an ebook reader and I still bought books. On my ebook I read books I can.t get here and so I would print them or read on my PC (therefore book industry also loses). The books I can get for a reasonable price I bought and read in paper. Mentioning that my ebook proved to be great help with my courses readings - all those sent pdfs from our lecturers, I think goes without saying.
oowh please! carrying them can be really annoying! My schoolbag is really heavy! It's much easier with an E-book. If you got an e-book you even don't need a schoolbag!!
Currently have 30 books in there that I wouldn't otherwise be able to buy because of space restrictions. Plus, it's lighter to carry. I also use it for text documents at work, less binders to carry....
I read about it in dept some time ago - it is expensive (well what can you do) but it is also absolutely incomplete - it does not have an operating system (palm would do beautifully), it is definitelly inflexible. Pity - even the much better ILiad is not too good.
I am so surprised that companies are not jumping into the e-book business. We are so tired of trying to read on our laptop or PDA. Sony's solution is great since just like paper, the more light you have, the better.
I think Law-Students could benefit from this. Lugging around all those lawbooks and commentaries is pretty unnerving. If these devices had storage capacity for a few hundred books, one could fit an entire library of lawbooks in them. And if the texts have hyperlinks to other passages, it would make my line of work a whole lot easier...
This is an amazing product, wish it was available in the uk. This is definitely the future of newspapers and books. The problem with pdas and mobiles is that their displays are power hungry and are difficult to read in direct sunlight. The e-ink displays don't require power for displaying an image, only to change it, so you're not going to be recharging it as often as you would a phone or pda. This technology is undoubtedly the way forward.
This device is probably good for the environment since all the books you own are digital instead of paper. I would only buy it if it was cheaper though.
WHY do pple have to read, they should listen more and use their eyes less, thats what makes the japanese and chinese wear glasses, all they do is read lots of books and have no time to live

I want that so bad! It would be so awesome to carry all my favourite books with me everywhere...! Maybe I'll let it slip to the rents for my birthday--and you can download textbooks onto it as well!

A TEXT to Speech Reader would be a good addition to any book readers.
I prefer to download and use a converter to MP3, then listen to it, even while driving, and get through a lot more books that way.
See BookSharer channel on YouTube and others like it.

Listen to computer voice is like listen a math teacher, BORING. There is no expression at all, and make you not understand. So yeah a soft that read the book for you could be nice, but not for a novel.
IDStatic 2 years ago
Well I find the voice very helpful and not boring.
This shows that opinion of boring is based upon personal biases. And that in order to benefit from anything we need to have an open mind to see how to do things differently than the limitations our limited knowledge and experience has put forward to be believed as facts by our unconscious mind.
I can listen to at least half a book or more each week as part of using MP3 while I travel, shop, etc.
If you decide a voice is boring that is your loss.
MindTrip888 2 years ago
Though with over 30 years of computer experience, I can tell you electronic voices these days are very well done. Not the windows default, the bought one's like from AT&T, such as Audrey which has the British accent.
But people seem to hate things based upon little effort to adapt. Some just don't know how good they have it, unless they have contrast.
In life I have found that some ppl will find fault with anything and everything. Such ppl are happily miserable with seeing nothing is perfect.
MindTrip888 2 years ago
At this point in the products development, it is pretty much a waste of time and money.
No Wi-fi?
You have to use their "approved books"?
. . . pathetic!
For quite a number of years I shall continue to use my library cards.

350 is not really much, seeing a regular book goes over the counter for $20,an e-book for sony goes on average for $14,5.
You save little over 5 dollars per book, and about 0,5-1 pound per book as well.
The model shown sales on ebay for about 215 now.
Their next model goes for about 250-275;and if you buy from Sony store, it'll go for 299 with 100 classic books pre-installed.

if you're able to read a book a day you're probably either reading very short books or need to get a job!
blameasia 3 years ago 5

I believe the eReader reads BBeB formats....not sure what "other" formats there are. I have tried to read some PDF formats, but it's not perfect because I can only zoom to medium.
sapipa177 3 years ago
actually i think you can also buy ebooks from the waterstones bookshops' site . . .
gatatakiloulaki 3 years ago 2
its that much because u can keep reading for a month or so with out rechargin, if u dont do anything else of course, like watch media, or listen to music...
arktikgraywolf 3 years ago
I love the concept, and I'd totally get it... if it wasn't for the price.
I mean, my PSP can do the same thing (I can take screen shots of PDF's, or scan my own book, and save it as .jpegs to "read"), and it costed me a fraction of Sony's e-reader (350USD?! Holy SMOKES!)!
I'm definitely not bashing the product, it does appeal to certain people--especially those that are always on the move. I'm simply skeptical of its mainstream appeal due to pricing issues.
WackoBobby 3 years ago
TOTALLY agree, unless you are really going to read, this thing would be expensive and useless. I have one, but I bought mine for under $100 USD becasue they were making room for the second version ($299). It is extremely expensive at retail price, but I love it!
sapipa177 3 years ago
I assume it is because of the e-paper. Have you ever tried actually reading a book on an lcd screen? it's almost impossible.
tarhun 3 years ago
I assume it is because of the e-paper. Have you ever tried actually reading a book on an lcd screen? it's almost impossible.
tarhun 3 years ago
Actually, I read on my PSP screen frequently. It's not as bad as some people make it out to be, I don't think.
It's just like reading on a computer monitor--you get used to it, even if it's not the most natural thing in the world.
WackoBobby 3 years ago
I'd prefer technology provide solutions that *are* the most natural thing in the world rather than having to adapt myself and "get used" to something that isn't optimal.

to the person who lost faith in humanity.....

Good lord.... I knew that the world was going to hell, but when people are just too lazy to carry a book!! A fucking book!!! I've lost all faith in humanity.
DLCBJE 4 years ago
Its not about carrying a book, but getting them. Also we live in an era of eco thinking, so what is better, to print all the books or just read them in e form? If I had to print all the books Id like to read from for ex. project guthenberg, Id waste really much paper:)
Karadum 4 years ago
yeah u would but we have to think of what will happen to books. . i mean its only only the writers who write the books but also publisers and agents and page designers and all kind of people who live from the book industry... if this continues any one would be able to get an Isbn numr and give his book for sale online then boom!= book industry lost!!!
gatatakiloulaki 3 years ago
I have now for almost a half a year an ebook reader and I still bought books. On my ebook I read books I can.t get here and so I would print them or read on my PC (therefore book industry also loses). The books I can get for a reasonable price I bought and read in paper. Mentioning that my ebook proved to be great help with my courses readings - all those sent pdfs from our lecturers, I think goes without saying.
Karadum 3 years ago
oowh please! carrying them can be really annoying! My schoolbag is really heavy! It's much easier with an E-book. If you got an e-book you even don't need a schoolbag!!

I've had mine for about a year - love it.

Niftified 4 years ago
This device is probably good for the environment since all the books you own are digital instead of paper. I would only buy it if it was cheaper though.
