S-bahn: Runned by Deutsche Bahn, running further into the region and outskirts of Berlin (especially east-Berlin) and mostly underground. Not so dense network in the centre.
Do not think of them as substitutes, but as additions to each-other. Like the metropolitain (U-bahn) and RER (S-bahn = Regional Express) in Paris!
