depends on how you define great and living clean. he lives a great life and is an inspiration to so many, in so many ways, more so than any other human being i know. The Greatest. :-)
Duran was the best lightweight ever and certainly a top 10-15 fighter pound for pound ever.....and I think in his prime 1970-1980 he would have beat anyone in his division including Sugar Ray,Hagler,Hearns etc...the problem was those other greats were entering their prime in the early 80's and Duran was exiting his prime years.
I think Duran was awesome and like I said could be top 10, but I said 10-15 because of the same thing that holds back Oscar De La Hoya...despite his talent, record and balls to always fight the best regardless if he was in his prime or not...he came up short in his biggest fights just like Duran.
@salvi1979 your comparing delahoya to Duran?? that is simply laughable! you think oscar & Roberto had similarities?? like having balls & taking on all comers? that is simply outrageous & ridiculous!! Duran was in a class all his own; delahoya is an overpaid buffoon that never had any backbone; how U mention him alongside Duran I'll never understand
Obviously your reading comprehension skill is low and your insecurity is high..nevertheless my point was not that De la Hoya was better or even in the same league as Duran...my point was their greatness and legacy was severely damaged due to losing in their biggest fights most of the time which is a irrefutable fact.
@salvi1979 now is that your professional opinion on my condition? WOW! reading & insecurity; you've just saved me bundles of money on unnecessary psychiatric treatment.
I'm just a bit concerned regarding your condition; how could we fix delusion & outright idiocy?
never again will I underestimate the predictability of your stupidity! now that's an irrefutable iron clad fact! comparing delahoya to Duran's greatness??
you are welcome and since you dont know me from a stranger on the street you cant really estimate anything about me and be more creative that line was from Goodfellas LOL!!
listen to ray, he wanted to fight so quick coz he knew duran would be over weight and not able to fight his best.....that is one of many reason i never liked ray, great boxer but i never liked him...he waited for haglar to be past his best, he wanted duran when he knew he was not goner make the weight.
ray leonard on of the greatest. duran one of the greatest. i just think that ray leonard would have maybe a bit of an advantage at welter cus thats his weight. but lets cut the crap both legends both deserve love and admiration
Tear down SRL and you take the luster off Duran's masterpiece. If Leonard aint shit, then whats the win worth. Who's the greatest Duran beat? I'll give you a hint: Not Ken Buchanon or Esteban DeJesus.
@Croft578707 That's what happens when idiots are given acess to the internet. How can any question SRL character or record as a fighter? A person would have to be dumb or seriously dumb to do that. Prime SRL (1976-1982) is the greatest of a great generation of fighters.
Some very ridiculous comments about Leonard on here. Wilfred Benitez was 21 yrs old lineal champ 38-0 when Leonard beat him, Hearns was 32-0 (30 KO) when he beat him, Duran was coming off his greatest performance.
This is SPORTS, not war. Sportsmanship, ever heard of it? Most top athletes want to face the best at their best. Who wants to beat someone who clearly isn't at their best? And then brag about it the rest of their lives? When both were at their best, we saw what happened. Same with Hagler, he was late 30's, no legs and Ray gloats about it. This is why Ray is not a top 10 all time. Ray knew he had to fight these opponents when they weren't at there best, I call that chickenshit.
You want a true definition of what a chickenshit is? Try quitting in the middle of a fight,in which you're being paid millions of dollars, where you've absorbed no real, sustained punishment,in front of a worldwide audience...all because you're frustrated with your own inability to pin down your opponent and force him to fight under your own terms.
And Hagler was in his early 30's,you complete and utter retard.
@tapiaassasin According to wiki, Hagler's age was 35 at the time. Though, many insiders of boxing disputed his age and claimed he was actually older than that. You call Duran chickenshit? He NEVER backed down, he never forced another fighter to fight him at a disadvantage...his quitting had much more to do than Ray running around a ring. His own promoter (King) and his own handlers, stabbed him in the back for Ray, Duran was the great fighter and he was treated as a chump, F you.
Hagler's real date of birth was confirmed when he legally changed his name back in the early 80's.His birth certificate and his own confirmation >>>>> mindless speculation. And He backed down when he quit against Leonard, and he would do the same thing against pat lawlor several years later.duran quit against Leonard because he knew he didnt have a snowballs chance in hell of winning.
Duran and his own manager agreed to fight and he had months to prepare for it.
@tapiaassasin Duran was forced into fighting Leonard 5 months after Montreal. 'Leonard was aware of this, and in an interview for Beyond the Glory he said: "My intention was to fight Duran ASAP because I knew Duran's habits. I knew he would indulge himself, he'd gain 40–50 lbs and then sweat it off to make 147." Leonard knew this was his only chance against a better fighter. So he threw money at King to get Duran's people convince Roberto to sign. And Leonard brags about it?
No,he wasn't "forced" into fighting him.He received a significantly large purse for a rematch and was perfectly aware of such a rematch happening in the near future and had more than enough time to prepare for it,regardless of Leonard(who wouldn't have a clue on what Duran was getting up to anyway) said.
And five months is too short now? Lol.Duran was famed for gaining weight between fights, but it suddenly becomes an issue when he happens to lose - thats called an excuse
@tapiaassasin Roberto knew he had been sold down the river, his corner gave into every concession Leonard wanted, ala the big ring... Duran wasn't in top condition and Leonard knew it. When Duran vs Benitez, Leonard was commentating at ringside and said "Duran looks like the way he was in our 2nd fight, he looks weak and slow" another words, Leonard knew that Roberto was not at his best. When Leonard mocked him, Duran felt completely disrespected by all involved, so he said F you.
And why do you think Duran looked slow and weak? You dont think it might have had something to do with the fact that Duran had moved up yet another weight and was facing a superb boxer,do you? No,Duran wasnt at his best against Benitez - and there's many reasons for that other than some bullshit excuse that he didnt train hard(common theme for Duran fanboys) for the fight.
How can Ray, today, still brag that he whipped Duran? He obviously was not facing the Duran of the 1st fight because, as Ray says himself, tried to catch him out of shape. That is not facing the best, that is trying to fight someone who isn't at their best, where is the honor in that?
@blite13 Honor in that context is a relative term. One might feel the strategic positioning of his challenges where a favorable or honorable move in the context of winning. Having adept knowledge into the weakness of an opponent. That type of demeanor was highly praised in military branches, even touted in history books. It might appear negative but depends on the personal looking.
@blite13 Honour? They were pricefighters. Amateurs fight for honour, professionals for money. Why did Duran despise Leonard before the first match? Because Leonard was payed five times as much, that's why. Duran threatened Leonard, Leonards familiy and friends, in order to get under his skin. And he succeeded.
So Leonard planned his revenge carefully and succeeded with that in turn. And since he obviously have profound respect for Duran, he's rightfully proud he managed to defeat him.
@LarS1963 If you think they fight just for money....whatever. The top fighters fight for honor and to be the BEST. Duran despised Leonard because he was given top dog honors without earning it. Duran had 70 fights by the time he met Ray and he owned his division for 10 yrs before he met Ray. He saw Ray getting all the press and glory while Duran was treated like an afterthought. This is why Duran was so motivated for their 1st fight, he wanted to show the world who was #1, not money.
@theman1819 Don't be stupid, Bob Arum owns pacman. When someone owns you, how you gonna make your own decisions? Bob Arum doesn't wan't he's cash cow to get exposed even worse than he was against Marquez, who beat him AGAIN.

@sirulrich2331 Bullshit, you on crack? Pacquiao couldn't hold Roberto Duran's jockstrap. Duran had better footwork, head movement, defense, power etc. Even Freddie Roach (Pacquiao's trainer) said Duran would whoop Pacquiao's ass.
