This video is the point at which the band peaked and transcend the genre, effectively killing grunge in the process? why... because they are now a bionafied rock band, that the press and the industry could then use as example to categorize the entire grunge genre with.
This intern pissed off fans and bands alike because no one (arguably then and now) with an "authentic" image/identity despises having relations to the corporate mainstream "per say" (ROCKISUM).
IMAGE - is where they became a separate identity to the rest of the genre. the video shows they band dressed up in 1950's style uniforms (giving oad to Buddy Holly and the crickets) and performing on what is the Ed Sullivan show, which back in its day was the pinnacle of success for a band who happened to make it on to the show.
Its a show cannon, or a rock cannon in Nirvana's case.
AUTHENTICITY - Beside transcending the genre and being the end for grunge, the band show slides/parallels reminding us who we are watching, about halfway through we catch frames of the band behaving in their typical fashion, this is very clever because its merging the two images creating a show boat carrying the band through new dimensions and cultural meanings.
AUDIENCE- lets look at this in two way, the audience copy and pasted into the video, and the audience that is watching the video.
The ironic statement is painfully obvious, If Nirvana were to preform there music in front of an audience who would now be in their 60s/70s you would have a lot of upset old people on your hands. It would be completely out of context and would do the organizers of the event no good but controversy, which arguably would make them more famous.
But back in the 50's people were portrayed as simple, innocent and easily corrupted by new ground breaking ideas.
(The other funny thing is that the two times were entering a stage of musical revolution and by using screaming fans of the past reflects the events of the world that Nirvana were apart of).
The audience of the "now" (todays times) will subconsciously pick up on this because its so unnatural and comical giving them the satisfaction and enjoyment that the makers of the video aimed to achieve, thus making them more popular even further.
AUDIENCE - An argument contradicting what I just said might be that, "hay" there is quite possibly not more than a shred of different to what Buddy holly (plus similar bands that were breaking through at the time) and Nirvana. Their both a three piece "rock band" with Guitar, Bass and Drums. Their both being marketed like they are the future and that what they stand for is authentic and controversial.
the only real difference is the sound and production?
I like the version with chad better... He makes it better somehow... Oh well, this song is just them making fun of their audience, pay attention to the lyrics, u will see
Hey He's the one Who likes all our pretty songs And he likes to sing along And he likes to shoot his gun But he knows not what it means Don't know what it means, when I say:

fob won't last a decade and a half tho. The reason no one watches this is cause we've all seen it a million times over, where fob are just beginning to get popular, and stupid fans watch their shit for the first or second time. They still ain't shit compared to nirvana tho - Nirvana rulz anytime !!!
amen. i feel bad for those who have never heard about nirvana or anything else that came out from about 90-97. coincidentally that population are who are buying into all that fob, panic at the disco crap. theyve never heard any decent music in their entire lives and all it takes for them to think a song is good is if they see it on some fucken music list.
sorry i didnt mean to mark this as spam i meant to reply. and yeah youre right. its pretty pathetic how teenagers these days dont know the good from the bad bandss.
hm yeah I agree but I think he wants to refer at least a little bit to the ed sullivan performance of the beatles and makes fun of the brainless fans that just showed up to the concert to see their favourite stars and not to listen to some really good music and the things for what it stands
