I've heard this kind of comment before, and I don't get it. You may not like the look of the instrument, that's fine. Many tapping instruments look odd to me, too, but that may be just related to their newness. No doubt the reaction to the tuba was similar when it was new. But the second point - are you suggesting oranists and pianists, who regularly play two parts at the same time, sound like "two average players playing together?" Were keyboards designed by "people with no friends?"

@baaltshuvah I see your point but it's apples and oranges in the sense that to play a note on any keyboard requires one finger, never two. The instrument itself is not compromised in any way by playing this way.

Tap instruments take a single playing technique from a parent instrument (guitar) and attempt to make it the default way to play notes. This inevitably causes the listener to relate what they're hearing back to the guitar and leads to this feeling of it sounding compromised.

@joshuajouet - I hear you, but to me, the part about relating the music back to guitar is really more the player's fault than the instrument's. Tuning, attack, choice of processing, proper setup . . . would you agree that there are a lot of factors to consider?

@baaltshuvah Don't get me wrong; I think folks who master Tap board instruments are incredible musicians, but for me it's a visual medium only, not one that can be enjoyed easily sitting at home on CD unless the performance is a wholly assimilated part of a greater composition (like a solo within a song for example).

I re-affirm that IMHO to LISTEN to this guy (not WATCH him), just to listen is to hear a result that could be better achieved by two people with an instrument each. Peace!

@joshuajouet - I do regularly listen to and enjoy some solo tapping music. I highly recommend Greg Howard's 'Stick Figures' and Larry Tuttle's 'Through The Gates'. Bear in mind that this style of playing is still very young. Keyboards have benefitted from several hundred years' worth of virtuosi, repertoire and master-grade instruments.
