Does anyone know the song when they get OUT of the asteroid field and attack the Star Destroyers? I'm pretty sure it was the song for Nar Shadda Multiplayer in Jedi Outcast.
This amazing sequence still kicks ass today! Remember---NONE of this was done with fake-looking CGI. Real models were used. This was INCREDIBLY difficult to do back in 1980.
@ XHellphyreX You honestly would be surprised by the model work that ILM created for the prequels, things like the Coruscant battle was obvious CG. But Many close up shot were model based...... Plus ILM has superior blurring and compositing techniques.
best scene in the film is when the imperial star destroyer is destroyed by asteroid while Darth Vader command fleet commanders and one of them disappears...
"You said you wanted to be around when I make a mistake, well this could be it sweetheart." Real dialogue between a man and a woman. I have used this line with my ex-wife while driving. Compare this to: "I wish I could just wish my feelings away."
Good gravy will you all please shut up about the damn prequels. We got it already. We got the message five years ago: you hate it. Good for you, that's nice and dandy, whatever helps you sleep at night. GAWD, SHUT UP ALREADY You're already making yourselves even more tedious and annoying than the movies you so heavily criticize. If you hate the prequels so much: don't speak, utter or think about them. Period. You only hurt yourselves with this long, drawn-out trite
@kaihedgie And I thought you politically correct fairies were all for freedom of speech? If people hate the shitty prequels they are entitled to say so, most of the World does so you will not silence the majority, despite your little bitch rant. Now run along and wank off watching CGI Transformers.
Thank God that idiot Lucas ( well maybe he wasn't an Idiot then ) or the movie industry back then hadn't access to the awful, cheap looking CGI that has ruined all fantasy movies now. You really feel your watching a chase through an asteroid field, William's grt music, quality actors that look grown up... and that is all model work you're looking at. In 100 years faggoty CG STILL will never look as good as this but sadly proper effects are a thing of the past.
@kaihedgie Why do you talk like a faggot? I'll tell you something 'bro', the story I told about your mother was 'Cool' to. Now fuck off and if you got 'smart' like that in real life with me I'd break your neck, fucking brave little internet faggot.
@robhere1982 Calling someone out on their sexuality as the only argument only confirms your own insecurities, then again, you probably wouldn't understand, knowing your "compelling" arguments as it is
@kaihedgie I'm saying that's what @robhere1982 was saying, apparently. "Why do you talk like a faggot?" is a fairly anti-intellectual stance to be taking.
Then again, he was born in 1982. We all know everyone born then is totally gay and likes to bang dudes. *Waits for reply that fails to understand sarcasm*
You are right. CGI still looks El Fako---especially in close ups. Not that it doesn't have its uses, and is a good tool to add to the f/x technician's toolbox. But, unfortunately, it has become a crutch for today's movies to cover-up weak storylines and poor screenwriting. Got a weak scene? The director tells the f/x guys to create a thousand aliens instead of one. Just a few mouse clicks is all it takes. This sequence in Empire was mostly real models--VERY difficult to do back in 1980.
Empire Strikes Back is by far the best of the trilogy. I don't count the prequels as being Star Wars. They're more just high priced effects with little to do with the story and useless dialogue. I'll take a scene like this with good graphics and good acting over all the high priced bullshiat in the prequels any day of the week.
LOL when Han is yelling while trying to fix the hyperdrive motorvator (the thing that makes the ship go light speed) around 1:08 to 1:28 in this video.
...I totally agree with XhellphyreX...I think that they overuse and abuse CGI, CGI can be used in certain situations but i prefer the "real" thing. no matter how advanced CGI gets it will ALWAYS look fake just like in the movie I am Legend. they CGI'd the infected humans, it looked AWFUL!!!
Personally, I think models have much more visual appeal than CG. I don't care how advanced CG tech. gets, you can always tell the actors are reacting to nothing actually there. Star Wars 4, 5, 6 rule. The first 3 were ok but I think a little too heavy on CG. I would have stuck with the models - they're more realistic, more tangible. I think even Yoda was CG for his fight scenes. I think using animatronix coupled with some good puppeteering would have been just fine.
There's nothing really there in all these scenes too lol.
Some actors I've seen have pulled it off really well, like David Hewlett.
I like how you think Yoda was CG for his fight scenes LOL!!!!! He was entirely CG for episodes 2 and 3 period, and you can't even be too sure about it LOL
@XHellphyreX yea gc has no charm at all watching cgi is like watching a cut scene in from videogame i went to go see avatar and i couldn't enjoy it cause the entire time i was their i was thinking press a to skip press a to skip
Still awesome, no CGI, as much as i like good CGI, but models have so much more, i dunno, realism. And everyone who's bitching about Jedi, go back and watch it, ignore the ewoks, and watch that last battle against the Fleet of SD's and the Executor, and tell me it's not fucking mint .
Then what happened? Lucas ruined it all with 'Return Of The Jedi' I don't think a film has ever let me down as much as Jedi did. As for the next three!! Empire is the glue that holds it all together, one great film one ok film and four terrible terrible films.
Sorry, man...I LOVE the Ewoks! They were cute and BADASS...and they represented the 'little guy' defeating the big guy...Jedi kicked ass, all three films RULE over the 'newer' ones...
I always wondered: how the hell did those Star Destroyers not see each other? That's like 3 Aircraft Carriers ramming each other, even though they had several miles before collision. Was everyone on all 3 SD bridges so focused on 1 tiny ship?
At 5:05 is one of my favorite scenes from the Star Wars trilogy. It's so subtle most people miss it. A large asteroid takes out the commanding platform of one of the star destroyers... in the next scene you see Darth Vader addressing three... oops, make that two commanders from three of the star destroyers!!!
The part where the Mynok slams against the MF's window scared the shit out of me the first time I saw it. I still flinch to this day because I can never anticipate it coming. Brilliant sequence.
The asteroid field chase is my favorite part of any Star Wars film ever made, ever. John Williams' score is at its very best here. Awesome, awesome, awesome.
Han has some big balls man to go into an asteroid field. He is a better pilot than Luke, Anakin, and Obi Wan. He didn't have the force like they did, and still could save Luke to destroy the Death Star and fly into an asteroid field
I imagine CG will date so badly compared to this. The brilliance of this scene cannot be underestimated. The music works exceptionally well, and along with the tight editing it only adds to the kineticism of the scene (see 3.02 to c. 3.24).
It's mostly because sense they have all this new technology, they have a tendency to take it a little too over the top, such as at the beginning of Revenge of the Sith. Too much, but this level of action is just right.
Take that prequel trilogy. You have nothing in 3 movies that comes close to one epic scene of many in Empire.

Han has some big balls man to go into an asteroid field. He is a better pilot than Luke, Anakin, and Obi Wan. He didn't have the force like they did, and still could save Luke to destroy the Death Star and fly into an asteroid field

Absolutely stunnig even after all those years!
I still haven't seen a flight seen that even gets close to this dispite all those CG technologies today.....
