  • When my fellow Americans blame one administration for all of our current problems (whether it be Bush or Obama), I cite this video, point out how old it is, and then point out the fact that most of the problems they are blaming a recent president for are in this song. "Recession's on the way," "we kicked ass in Iraq" "as for global warming, we'll just kick ass wearing shades," etc. This stuff has been building up for years.

  • Stephen Fry as an American... MIND BLOWN. O.o

  • Hugh is so good at singing, and Stephen is so funny as a redneck.. This song is brilliant.. Its a bit scary that the topics of this song is still something that the news talk about, even after almost 20 years.

  • This is beautiful. I love these guys so much -3 thanks so much for posting.

  • this song is just KICKIN' ASS (screamed with Stephen's tone)

  • Seeing Fry acting like a redneck hick just made my day.

  • Stephen is so opposite himself here, it's sooo wondrous

  • The lyrics implies it was made after 2000, but the video quality makes it look like you pulled it straight out of the 1970s, lol.

  • @EdouardDubois This episode was made in 1992. You're way off. A Bit of Fry & Laurie wasn't still going in the 21st Century. Can't you tell that Hugh looked considerably younger here? More than 11 years younger. Hugh's satirical songwriting is brilliant on so many levels. Not least because most of them are depressingly topical.

  • @poeticjustice1000 Just shows that nothing has progressed since 1992 :'(

  • @NickyLess True. Yet, this neanderthal maxim that "kicking ass" is the only progressive way, is still unofficial policy in certain countries & political Parties. Twenty years on & we're still right where we were. You'd think previous Govt.s would be embarrassed or just a tad ashamed that instead of evolving under their guardianship, things have regressed. Some just seem too blinkered or simple to learn from history. To be powerful & incompetent should be an oxymoron, not a trait.

  • @poeticjustice1000 I agree with you 100%. Unfortunately each new party seems keen on only blaming the current administration for their failings, but never managing to propose something that actually works.

  • @EdouardDubois It was made in the early 90's. America's been to war with Iraq, before you know... The video quality was originally better, though.

  • @konstantinopoulos33

Interesting, but I was also reffering to the mentions of flooding. I didn't realize global warming scare had struck so early on.

  • Coincidentally, this is more or less Rick Perry's entire campaign summed up as a song.

  • wow stephens redneck/hillbilly accent was perfect he pitch the tone everything

  • That should be the southern accent, right?

  • laurie looks much like lou reed here

  • The intro is very similar to a song made by a norwegian called Øystein Sunde. Jaktprat is that song called

  • @LaydayEruanna Diplomatisk og fint tenkt det da :)

  • Stephen just made me shit my pants! LOL!!!

  • The red hat Stephen is wearing...

    NO!

    *jumps out of a window*

  • oh to be so tallented you can forget a gem like this, just brilliant !!

  • Absolutely Fantastic. If you cant see the funny side then you must be Dead.

  • "SING THE SONG, VERN!!" Bahaha! Oh, Stephen. I can't imagine how you could conveniently forget hopping around the stage in grimy overalls. ;)

  • LOL great !!!

  • @kebabsvein1 you whore.

  • @recreciever you are about to get a heck of a lot of views. :)

  • @VamLoveAndKisses

Yeah I was wondering why my mailbox blew up. For the record, I rarely upload anything so there's no need to follow me :)

  • I'm not surprised Mr Fry can't remember performing this. He must have blotted it out from embarrassment. Mind you, he's probably replaced the memory with more useful information/vocabulary.

  • @PeterYoshi You're a foolish fool. Your foolish foolery with be your downfall. Foolish!

  • This is so much more amusing because it's Stephen Fry...

  • Best song is mystery. This little gem is 2nd best :)

  • Hugh's a good guitarist ! Love the lyrics, thank you for the link steve !

  • Brilliant! :D

  • Holy moly, if Toby Keith or some other pop-country jerk recorded this (with a few small changes--like two), it would reach the top ten in country billboard.

  • @kebabsvein1 Way back on 03.09? I just found out about it today, on 09/03.

  • @vaxjoaberg I hope that's sarcasm haha. otherwise..... *facepalm*

  • Sorry what? You don't remember doing this!? LOL! I thought I had a bad memory!

  • House?

  • @Treblaine Roadhouse

  • Oh! dear...!!!

  • half of me really wanted to see fry literally kick laurie's ass at one point

  • @healthyholemealbread That was my half xD

  • kickin' ass

  • And as for global warming, we'll just kick ass wearing shades. ha!

  • Ohh my goodness. This is brilliance.

  • Was this on Hugh's recent album?

  • I love this. Hello twitter people

  • I'd completely forgotten about this!

  • I love this song :P

  • I didn't realize that was Laurie!! :D :D hahaha fail

  • Stephen?

  • Mr Fry?

  • Does, sorry, not do.

  • How do Hugh keep a straight face when Stephen tries to walk into the backdrop.

  • @HELPTHEPICKLEISALIVE Hes a professional.

  • I know this is meant to make fun of hillbillies and Americans, and I know that, being a country girl I should probably be a little offended, seeing as I have some close friends as moronic as he's acting, but it's just too brilliant and funny for me to find fault!

    JAN3

  • fry , standing on laurie's head would reach a height of appx, 12' 7". a giraffe is about 18' tall, the difference being the true height of tom cruise. not a lot of people know that.

  • I bet Stephen didn't think he'd be doing this when he went to Cambridge...

  • @TsaladsSeggs Actually he might have... With the theatre group where he met Hugh Laurie and Emma Thompson :)

  • The song is brilliantly relevant to the Earth's current state. Pretty funny too.

  • @ClavicusViIe

It was written and sung 18 years ago. Ponder that.

  • @muffin8or

Thanks for the derogatory reply, I did know that, which is why I commented on how it was relevant to the current state of the Earth, otherwise it wouldn't be so brilliant as it wouldn't seem so eerie that it was relevant.

  • @ClavicusViIe

Those sentiments were not conveyed in your original comment.

  • I love Stephen in this one........

  • Oh Stephen XD Hehe Love them! But dungarees how how tall Stephen really is :L

  • Can this be my new ringtone?? I LOVE IT!

  • Try and watch Stephen Fry dancing like that without laughing!

  • LMAO! This is hilarious! I live in Texas and there are people here who actually act and sound like this. Spot on!

  • Never forget that Hugh Laurie's a brilliant mimic and musician, amongst other things. Both of them are brilliant,in my opinion.

    Thanks for the clip!

  • How Stephen acts in this is generally how people act in Oklahoma....

  • song download plz

  • Stephen fry generally looks retarded. Fantastic!

  • KICKING AYEASS!!

  • Still a relevent topic to lampoon today, and if I'm unmistaken this video is from the early 90's!

  • i am from iraq and you are righ 3 of my family died thanx bi**

    :(

  • @alimunth Sorry about that.

  • This so funny!

  • It's funny and sad how all these problems are still the same

  • as for global warming we'll just kick ass wearing shades lol genius

  • @feistygeist How true. How true!

  • I'd assume they'd be Cowboys fans, so the Redskins hat.... lol

  • Laurie looks a bit like Agent Smith

  • Fry is a fuckin legend

  • .....it still works today :S scary times. Including the Iraq reference and the floods. Surely this should be a bit of a warning sign......Oh p.s I love Stephen weird dance. Am crying with laughter.

  • Hilarious!

  • This reminds me quite a bit of My Name is Earl.

Also, even the British realize that only idiots are Redskins fans.

    (Go New York Football Giants!)

  • it looks like johnny knoxville

  • How can such an intelligent man pull of being a complete moron so convincingly?

  • @TheAverageFox It takes an intelligent man :)

  • @TheAverageFox Mr Fry is an amazing actor. And he is beautiful. Sigh. Why are all the best ones taken or gay?

  • @TheAverageFox I agree, I love the fact that SF is playing the moron since that was normally HL's role. Bloody hell he does a great job too!!

  • @TheAverageFox By being such an intelligent man, of course. ;)

  • @TheAverageFox he is from Norfolk so it just comes naturally.

  • @bazzatheblue He's not from Norfolk, he's from London. He moved there later. And FYI, Norfolk kicks ass!

  • @TheAverageFox no it doesn`t,it`s shit, everybody has six fingers on each hand and everyone has diabetes because they are all intermarrying, and that`s true by the way.Just ask Dr Gibson ex MP for norwich (north)he said so himself. But if you like it ,well horses for courses eh!

  • @bazzatheblue Yes let's trust an MP's opinion, that sounds like a smashing idea.

  • @TheAverageFox Dunno, but ask Rowan Atkinson

  • @TheAverageFox Precisely BECAUSE he is such an intelligent man !

  • @TheAverageFox

Easy. He just pretends to be American. haha

  • @futureZbright OH HURR HURR HURR U R TEh CLEVERS

  • @TheAverageFox Because he's not just intelligent, he's a GENIUS!!

  • @TheAverageFox Maybe because, ironically he is so intelligent.

  • theres nothing that cant be solved by kicking ass, kick david cameron nowwwwwwwwwww

  • That's a "kick-ass" song

  • GENIUSES! There are not shows of this quality today, really LOVE and miss British comedy of that era... Hugh, Stephen, John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson... LOVE them all!!!! <3

  • Best song ever.

  • How is Hugh not laughing his ASS off. It's only a testament to their great acting skills that they can seem so retarded LOL especially Stephen, I love these two.

  • Hugh looks exactly like Link Wray in his 1978 performance!

  • The song is funny, the accents sound nothing like any southerner I've ever met and I've lived here my entire life as have multiple generations of my family. I have cousins y'all would probably need a translator to understand.

  • I just love that this song is about 20 years old, but still up to date!

  • Kickin' Ais!

  • Oh man, Fry is just too goddamn brilliant here.

  • i have watched this video and not once would vern sing the song for me

  • lol Fry KICKIN' ASS!

  • Does anybody have the chords to this????

  • does anyone else thinks in this video hugh looks a little bit like james hethfield??

  • KICKING ASS!!

  • Thumbs up for the South!!

    YEEHAW

  • Laurie's accent is the Dick Van Dyke/Mary Poppins equivalent of a southern accent. He doesn't sound at all like a real southerner.

  • @jimgravesus Not the point at all, really.

  • @misan89

Every time an American puts on a English accent around an Englishman (even if its not a serious effort) they get ridiculed and savaged. Jonathan Ross started on that crap with Tom Hanks but Tom put him in his place. I'm just saying the English need to stop thinking that their imitations are so dead on. And BTW to the average American they do sound like Dick Van Dyke. They just can't stand the fact that's what they sound like.

  • @jimgravesus Come on, mate, this is not at all what I meant. I just wanted to say that this song is not about accents, really, it is more about making fun of the colonials' mentality. That's it. I do not know any Englishman who would be so sure about their American accents. You're right with Wossy, who does not really sound like a native speaker of any accent of the known world. On the other hand, Laurie as House, M.D. is impressive.

  • @misan89

    @misan89

Laurie's accent is ok. I keep expecting him to shout "HURRAH" at any moment. The best i"ve heard is Daniel Day Lewis. His accent never slips. Christian Bale and Gary Oldman were very good in Batman. Helena Bonham Carter was great in Fight Club. Her accent shows when she gets loud but most actors can't help but revert when they're being passionate. Kate Winslet is very good but also sounds English when she gets loud.

Look for "SNL - Don' You Go Rounin' Roun To Re Ro" Youtube

  • @jimgravesus Jonathan Ross cracks jokes against anyone for anything he can think of. The Tom Hanks interview was great and Tom more than held his own, getting more laughs than Ross. It's just messing around, some big stars can take it & dish it right back out without taking themselves too seriously (check out Quentin Tarantino on Ross), some can't, and Ross guages the ability of the star to take it and behaves accordingly, Ckeck out Nicole Kidman being owned by Ross but still taking it.

  • We just stand in front of the mirror and kick our own!

    HILARIOUS!

  • "-Sing the song, Vern -I'm singing the song, Horen. Don`t tell me to sing the song, i'm singing the song" Hahahahhahaha. Hilarious

  • lol Stephen dances like some crazy nuclear chicken

  • "We kicked the ass of cancer and we'll kick the ass of AIDS and as for global warming, we'll just kick ass wearin shades." haha hilarious

  • thats the american way XD

  • I almost died laughing when Stephen started to play this harmonica-thingy... :D

  • LMAO...funny funny stuff. But apparently 47 ppl watching this are from Alabama

  • "kickin ayas"

  • "Tap along with the strange rhythms in his head...."

  • me and my gf sat and watched the whole lot of thease on our first date 7 hour 30 mins of non stop f and l its the cement of a good realationship lol

  • Fucking etonians.

  • This song is my personal motto.

What absolutely hilarious results for a total role reversal. Stephen Fry- classiest man that ever lived- in overalls & the normally goofy faced ABOFAL Hugh in shades, kickin' ass.

  • I live in Texas and I know people like this. thats kind of freaky

  • sooo many accents

  • A funny detail is that Laurie (Vern) is playing a japanese guitar :^P

  • Wow LOVE this for any good reason, Country Stephen is hilarious too!

    "KICK'IN AI-SS!" XD

  • actually a pretty good song:P. Master Laurie really mastered the American accent

  • Stephen Fry in this sketch cracks me up. The lyrics are great (as are all of Hugh Laurie's lyrics)... but this sketch is really Stephen's.

  • increible! me hace cagar de risa cada vez q lo veo. incluso cuando pienso en eso me empiezo a reir solo. la gente me mira pero ya sabe donde puede ir...

salu2 desde el sur del sur

  • Stephens deadpan face at the begining has me in stiches everytime bloody time.

Same goes for the fave hugh pulls when he says about his brothers rhythms in his head

  • omg, this song ♥. i used to sing this everyday when i was ten years old! :')

  • hahaah,brilliant!!!

  • you'd never think they both went to Cambridge....

    absolutely fantastic! soooo funny!

    love these guys xxx

  • How could Hugh keep a strait face with Stephen jumping around like that.

  • special stephen is scary

but i want to give him a hug

  • I just read 'of mice and men' and this is all I could think of!!! Stephen is Lennie and Hugh is George!! It really fits :P

  • I am in awe of Hugh Laurie's ability to keep a straight face while Fry is going insane.

  • Stephen is a little bit special in this one. I think his shoes hurt.

  • It's very hard to actually come to terms with the fact that that's Fry. He's such a versatile actor!

  • I love seeing Stephen like this because he's usually so sophisticated. It's so enjoyable and scary at the same time.

  • Altho stereotypical, it's hilarious as heck.

  • I think my fave part is the way Stephen looks like he took that considerable brain of his,put it in a padded bag and sent it by second class post to Dorset.I thought Hugh was master of the 'vacant eyes/nobody's home' look(see George in Blackadder) but Stephen's lobotomized glaze kills me every time. His galumphing around like a crazed elephant trying to kill a cockroach is hysterical too. Hugh looks like he's channelling the love child of Chris Issak & Bob Dylan.

  • Although Hugh is good at accents, you guys should listen to the audio book of Stephen Fry's autobiography 'the Fry Chronicles'.He impersonates the accents of everyone he quotes in the book- from Ben Elton(cockney),Robbie Coltrane(Scottish) Stephen Sondheim(American) and every other accent you can think of. I bought the text version too so I can have the pleasure of reading the text and enjoying the sentence structure, but the audio reading is a great wheeze to listen to.Highly recommended.

  • Amazing that the pair of them isn't cracking up! Comedy legends!

  • hugh is the best...

  • What makes this song (and so many others Mr. Laurie has written like "Little Girl" and "Protest Song") is that it is still relevant 20 years later. It's also, I suppose a sign, that we still have a long way to go to fix the problems that our parent's generation were facing.

Thanks so much for uploading, redreciever!

  • fry looked like a zombie there...staring out blankly into space.

  • the funny thing is that Fry actually suffered a musical "accident" as a boy ..
