I understand if you unequip Lyle in that hallway before he departs, it makes the battle against him that much easier.

No spiritual or X Ray stuff but just a very bad translatation like most of the PS. In the japanese version Rhys doesn't talk at all during that part, only Lyle does and he just says he wants to test Rhys strength. Nothing more. The talk about the girl do not happen.

Maybe she has a really strong bodily odor and Rhys could smell her from a distance.
