I saw Lyle a couple of weeks ago in Fort Worth for the UNT Jazz Studies guest series and his piano solo was the most beautiful thing I think I have ever heard. It was amazing. I think the title of it was "Mirror of the Heart."
lol...for those who didn't understand you, I totally get it! I play both as well, but true...Lyle Mays regarded as a pianist is kept so quiet. He's one of the best out there and people only acknowledge his PMG playing with is mainly synth work when padding the Pat Metheny sound. It's his solo work that only a true jazz/music lover can appreciate. I have all of his solo albums and love them all. but you have to love his synth work too...that's where his creativity soars above the rest. =]
when I was a teen I started listening to Metheny coz I loved his drummers. Then I heard Mays. I couldn't believe it. He makes all the rest make sense.
Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays are and have been a song writing team for over thirty years. At this point, I don't think they are out to prove one better than the other. They are close musical companions. They complement each other to the point of being ridiculous, and the compositions they produce together are top level and without reproach.
He is a musician of TOP caliber with his own style both in playing and in composing and yet for the most part he lives in the shadow of Metheny while he could be doing so so much more.
In a sense I agree, I like Lyle's playing more in these settings than in the PMG. But, I don't think there are any "shadows" in the PMG. As a muscian there really isn't any place to hide, and as a co-composer you can only be celebrated. Bringing any sense of jazz ,music to the masses is an amazing feat.
@JustAintthatWay The guy in the background is the main responsible for the depth of the music. If they all go up front it's flat and one dimensional. BUT it takes a great genius to find the necessary humility to lurk back there and make it meaningful!
Loving Johnson's massive mullet and specs. That sure dates the clip. Really good band though and Lyle's on fire. Shame he doesn't do more solo touring, or indeed solo stuff full top.
This band is awesome! One of the most underrated musicians in the world, Lyle is also one of the most accomplished composers there is. I saw this tour in the states, and it was phenomenal!
wonder why mayes et al didnt release this incredible show as a cd

Whaa! Brilliant. Lyle should never touch a synth again. His piano solo's are the best.

Such an underestimated great musician.
Great vid though.

he appearantly chooses to stay in the shadow and devide his time between all his interests (like architecture, programming, family etc.)
Its a shame for sure but thats the way it is.

i echo this comment
no offense intended towards patm
but lyle's stuff has always stood out to me
this concert footage only reinforces that opin
have to guess mays just prefers his place in metheny's shadow
well mays is no man's shadow of course
just some guys' comfort zones are in the background not out front
nothng wrong w/ that either
jaw dropping performances by these artists from start to done
& mays CAN pull off being band leader as this show shows

Lyle Mays is incredible... what a melodic sense, what a block chords science!
I'm ok, we could have more tours and albums from mister Mays. He's one of the greatest in the WORLD.

santibanks 3 years ago
the tune is called "hard eights" and is from "fictionary" album, originally played with de johnette and marc johnson.
matrain82 3 years ago
thanks a lot! I have fictionary here and listen to it often though I didn't recognize it (I was complete shocked and amazed to see this performance)
Fictionary is pretty good as is his last album, Solo.
