Since that movie I love Sissy. Brilliant actress great singer big voice. That movie makes Loretta very wellknown all over the world. This two Ladies takes me back to the real country (folk) music.
In my opinion, she did a great job acting the role of LORETTA LYNN, but even though
Sissy has a passable singing voice, it does not compare with Loretta's actual early singing voice - she doesn't have Loretta's vibrato or strong singing style. I was always a little surprised that they didn't maybe try to mesh Loretta's own voice with Sissy's. I don't mean this in a critical way, for I think that Sissy really deserved the Oscar for this role. I just think Loretta's own voice is stronger.
I read Loretta Lynn's book, "Coal Miner's Daughter" and she said they gave her a private showing of the movie and she cried for 2 straight hours and "wanted to kill Sissy for singing as good or better than me" but she loved Sissy and loved the movie because it was so real to her and done so well.
I agree with oneboud I think that Loretta sang it better just because its her song and the first version is always the one preffered, but Spacek is also a fantastic singer and does all of Loretta's songs fabulously so she could sing if she really desired but her acting is phenonmenal and i'm glad she chose that path.
According to Loretta's "Still Woman Enough" book; she felt Sissy did all of the songs; EXCEPT Coal Miners Daughter very well. Loretta didn't care for Sissy's verson of Coal Miners. Loretta hand picked Sissy for the role and commented about it on Johnny Carson before Sissy even knew. Has anyone seen Loretta's version of "Me and Bobby McGee"?
I don't think Sissy sings better than Loretta, but I do think she is on the same level and could have been a country singer if she wasn't such a damn good actress.
@onebaud :i agree with that, sissy used to tease loretta and say she was going to get a tour bus and go on the road as loretta lynn the 2nd,this is told by sissy on the commentary on the dvd of coal miners daughter
@onebaud "On the same level"? You must have tin ears. If Loretta had sung like Spacek, we would never have heard of her today. She would have been a successful bar singer at best. Loretta had magic in her voice. Spacek is merely a good singer. However, good singers are a dime a dozen. Everyone knows someone who can sing well, but few people know someone who skyrocketed straight to the top, and stayed there for quite some time. It takes more than being able to sing on key to become a legend.
In the beginning, the makers of this film asked Loretta Lynn what actress she would like to see to portray her. Loretta replied "Sissy Spacek". When Sissy got the contract, Loretta trained Sissy to sing her style. Loretta is still Queen of Country music.
I read an interview with Loretta and when they got to talking about the movie, she said that some days she'd leave the set and go home and smack Doo in the head because of something that she recalled during the filming
This was the very picture show I ever saw. We saw it at a drive-in in Midland, Texas. Sissy, indeed do a great job as Ms. Loretty... To me she's the Queen of Country Music.

Awesome movie and the songs are mint too sing too im 28 and all my life grew up with this and other counrty music and they great i love old and new music but the older the better :)
Ol' Tommy Lee never got a lot of props for this film but he really helped to make this film complete. The whole scene about the "horny" thing is still one of the funniest things ever.
Very nice!! I love this movie too! My favorite scene is where Sissy Spacek as Loretta sings for the first time in public. The song was "There He Goes". I found this clip on Youtube and play it over and over.. I also watch the movie every time it's on TV.
I grew up loving this movie. It makes me think of my wonderful Granny, she wasn't a singer but she was a coal miners daughter. My greatest times with her was talking to her about her childhood growing up in coal towns a hard life most people could hardly understand now. On another note Sissy Spacek was so beautiful in those early pics from the movie.
My mother was a Coalminers Daughter.NE PA. During the big depression my grandma died from cancer leaving behind9 kids from 6 months to 17 years old. So you can guess my grandpa, the coalminer, had his hands full. He raised a bunch of great kids, and since I live in MI we would go there in the summers to visit. And sure as hell when we got with the cousins we would go and play in the abandoned coalmines. The only place they told us not to!!! I'm proud to be a cOALMINERS Granddaughter!!!
Loretta Lynn and Sissy Spacek: both classics! I love Coal Miner's Daughter ~ the original (Loretta), and the film, with Sissy Spacek. Incredible! This video has a nice montage of shots...
When they asked Sissy to play Loretta, she wouldn't do it until they put in her contract that she sings herself, not dubbed in Loretta's voice. Loretta was a tad angry. Sissy sings better. :)
Loretta wasnt angry she supported Sissy's decision in singing her songs and even helped Sissy learn to sing the songs .this is told by loretta on the interview she did for the dvd of coal miners daughter

@SusDgs You a frucking stupid if you thing sissy sing better then Loretta Lynn. The QUEEN OF COUNTRY MUSIC. Who has been in Country Music for 50 years this year. I Love You Loretta Honey All 50 Years Of You. No matter how many STUPID JACKASS PUT CRAZY STUFF ON HERE.
@SusDgs no Loretta sings better! she taught sissy spacek to sing like her but she doesnt compare to Loretta cuz if she did she would have landed herself a singin' career which she ddnt so that proves Loretta does it better
@tas4435 :sissy was in fact offered to record more albums by owen bradley lorettas producer however she wanted to remain as an actress since she had already established her acting career
Sissy Spacek is an incredibly gifted actress. She was born Mary Elizabeth Spacek in Quitman,Texas and her brothers nicknamed her "Sissy." Her family name is pronounced "Spa-check" because it is Czech, but we pronounce it "Space-eck."
I like this kind of old real country music.Today the country doesn't strike me like it did back in the 70's+80's.I guess those songs are the ones I really miss hearing on the radio back in the day.
It is hard to beleive this film is now 30 years old. I remember back in 1980 so well when it came out. Sissy Spacek did an outstanding job as the "Queen Of Country Music" Loretta Lynn and so deserved her Oscar, Golden Globe and gold album for her singing on the soundtrack.
Say it ain't so! Thirty years ago this movie came out and it was immediately one of my favorites - I watch it every time it comes on TBS and can lip sinc the lines. I agree, Sissy deserved an Oscar for her performance in this movie!
It was amazing how much she sounded like Loretta. She, from what I heard, Made sure she had Loretta's moves and sounds down before she would do the movie.
Nkkicute-I am a 'Bona fide" 'Hillbilly" and I actually love all kinds of music! My dad taught himself banjo and I'm teaching myself fiddle and lapharp (how ever sloooowly). Not all Hillbillies are HipHop/Rap "haterz!" Fer SHURE! LOL!
And to think that Sissy didn't really want to do this role because she thought she couldn't ... even opted to sing instead of lip syncing to scare off producers -- thank God she chose to do this movie after all. I absolutely adore Cissy -- what a sweet, wonderful, warm, kind and extremely talented woman she is. I fell in love with her acting when she played Carrie -- and wanted to shake those girls senseless for hurting her character in that movie.
Wonderful tribute! Thanks for posting. I'm glad I bought this DVD finally because I LOVE to watch this movie: can't see it enough. Sissy Spacek is a great actress and it's my favorite Tommy Lee Jones role.
Keep Loretta in your thoghts and prayers because I understand that she is very sick right now.
I have no idea what's wrong with her: possibly it's really nothing becauae I had read about her being sick but I read it in Enquirer (or one of those papers like that) and they tend to play things up too much so perhaps it's nothing (I hope!)
I just saw coalminers daughter last year and I was blown away. I thought her music was awesome. I'm so bored with music on the radio today. I hate all this rap and hip hop. it's annoying!
Some of those "idiots" are making millions and you know what? Country music artist totally respect them most artist respect others for their music but when it comes to country only their hillbilly fans disrespect music they don't like.
sissy spaceck did a great job on this movie. this is my all time favorite movie. i have seen this movie more times than i can count. at thousand times. sissy did a fantastic time. good job guys. thank-you for posting this. loretta lynn is my all time favorite. and this song is too.
Loretta PICKED sissy for this movie....Sissy was like "wth?' lol and then she met Loretta. I think they "clicked" The best people on this earth are from the "hollers"!!!
I love you sissy...fan of you since (violets are blue 1986)....FOR YOU I OFFER THE MUSIC: (SHE'S A LADY), FROM TOM JONES 1970!!! KISSES, JOE, FROM BRAZIL!
What a movie!! Can you believe that it's almost thirty years old??
I've been a Loretta Lynn fan ever since I remember. The first time that I met her was in Philadelphia, PA when she was singing Coal Miner's Daughter for the first time. I was ten years old and she was very warm and friendly to me when I got my first hug from the living legend.
Loretta still tours often and keeps a very busy lifestyle.
THANK YOU for making this vid!! Coal Miner's Daughter is one of my all time favorite films. Great work!! Sissy Spacek is absolutely amazing! Her talent blows me away!!!

Awesome Job!!!!!

I agree about the movie! what do you mean sick? what's wrong?
7861312 2 years ago
I have no idea what's wrong with her: possibly it's really nothing becauae I had read about her being sick but I read it in Enquirer (or one of those papers like that) and they tend to play things up too much so perhaps it's nothing (I hope!)

I just saw coalminers daughter last year and I was blown away. I thought her music was awesome. I'm so bored with music on the radio today. I hate all this rap and hip hop. it's annoying!
