Winston! I used to play this as a child, really looked up to you! Unfortunately had to stop trumpet because of a tooth accident, still loving the tune tho!
He has a gift and he uses it to bless the socks off us! I could listen to this every day. He takes a musical instrument and makes it sound like pure gold---amazing.
This tune was used during the Second World War as a jingle for BBC's broadcasts to occupied Denmark. For this reason it is still well-known in Denmark today.
I love this music and happy to listen to all sorts of interpretations and this is one of the best. It was originally written for the harpsichord which I heard once long ago and seems weird. My absolute favourite is the version with Hakan Hardenberger, the Swedish virtuoso.
This guy is a genius, PERIOD! I do wish he comes down to Sydney and do a workshop with our young and very talented jazz musicians. Well, here's hoping.
he's a pompous , self-centered, string-pulling, asshole. The way he treated Miles Davis was unacceptable. I heard Wynton got his ass beat when he played with the big dogs and turned to simpler, safer more classical pieces. His improv is not very good, relative to other pieces.
He also has devoted his life to the teaching and longevity of jazz music. So before you ramble off some douchey little rant, you should think about how little miles davis cares what others think of him.
Who gives a shit what he "devoted" his life to doing - it's exactly that "devotion" to the "longevity" of what HE feels is really " jazz" that is the reason why I call him pompous. He's not doing anything new or interesting. Just merely saying that "all jazz is modern" doesn't mean anything." The way a musician treats another musician say more about the former not the later, regardless of whether later doesn't care -all the more proof the later is a MAN and not a little boy.
Who gives a shit? How about all the people that have decided to pursue a higher level of jazz and trumpet achievement because of him? Omg, he teaches what he believes? No shit, that's because there is no jazz curriculum. Everyone teaches what they believe. "ass beat when he played with the big dogs" Really? Because he played/plays extensively with people like sean jones and wyclif. He is a big dog... You're a silly stupid little joke of a human.
For the record, the way he treated miles, and saying it's "not real jazz music", I'll agree, that was low. But he apologized for it, and it was when he was much younger. Uninteresting improv? Listen to his recording of cherokee on youtube. If you want to call out a douchy jazz trumpeter, you're barking up the wrong tree. Go rip on Arturo or something. Wynton Marsalis is the single best thing in America for jazz education, and in general, the lively hood of the style.
Actually, this tune is from the CD "In Gabriel's Garden". The entire CD was recorded LIVE with the English Chamber Orch, in St. Giles Church, London. Wynton & the orchestra worked to add zillions of grace notes & arpeggios to the 32 pieces recorded on the disk.
A totally unique & astounding effort, & the best CD of trumpet music I've yet to hear.
Mr. Marsalis DANCES over the notes like a band of angels on the head of a pin.
he starts his trills on the wrong notes.... for that historical period anyway. Which im sure he knows and does it anyway because he knows how much of a badass he really is and can do whatever the hell wants
I played this myself in 1980's with a school brass small band (2 trumpet, baritone, trombone, french horn, tuba) but it was titled in our notes as "Trumpet voluntary". Thanks for posting this, the sound of this recording speaks for itself.
The best version of The Prince of Denmark's March. The Timpani's introduction is very true, and the trumpet of Wynton Marsalis is the biggest interpretation in the Whole universe!
c'est la meilleur version que j'ai entendu, trompette claire et vivante :)

This song is trumpet voluntary. When Clarke wrote this, it was written as The Prince of Denmark's March. But this is Trumpet Voluntary

it actually called The Prince of Denmark's March. Trumpet Voluntary is the title of several English keyboard pieces from the Baroque era

In Denmark this tune is called Prins Jørgens March
it was this prince there was married to Princess Anne in England he was called Prins George he was son of the Danish King Frederik the 3.

Absolutely superbly played -- made the hairs stand up,
Did you know this is the march of the British army's chaplains?
It was played by the BBC while broadcasting to occupied Denmark during the war.
gurgast 2 years ago
The trill rule is enforced primarily in works later than Clarke's work.
This work lies on the cusp between middle and high Baroque. Conventions are only guides, as my piano professor would say.

Your statement is totaly correct, but in the original version no trills is written, it was commen for the perriod to add trills where it might suit.
Great piece indeed
