  • Art of programming, more than 5000 lines.

  • Did you know that this was the last c64 game commercially released

  • If I ever need music for a game in developement, I will ask Jeroen Tel for help.

He is the best! The level 4 tune is so much better than the original.

  • ten times better than the spectrum version

  • what is better? C64 or Amiga? C64 is better and amiga is butt XD.

  • This is actually a good conversion. Unfortunately, like Twin World, the cassette loading times made it so slow.

  • Oh the music is brilliant!

  • Amazing! I knew there was a Lemmings C64 port but never seen it before. It's actually awesome seeing ol' C64 rendering so many animated sprites at the same time. I bet it was not easy to program on such a limited machine.

  • @kad3t Actually, it's the background that is made up of sprites. The Lemmings are bitmap graphics. If you read the developer's blog about the game you will see that this was the only way to be able to handle 100 Lemmings at the same time. That's also the reason why the whole width of the screen is not used: You can only put 8 sprites on the same scanline. 8*24 = 192 pixels playfield.

Pretty smart solution, I must say.

  • the c64 is like...."what the f'**k are they expecting me to do now?" "the sound I can do guys but the graphics ...?" wtf?"

  • That good game also exists for c64... wow!!! It looks very nice, nearly the pc version. But the chiptune-music is alot better than in the pc one!

  • this game rocks. as usual the SID is perfect.

  • Is it possible to use a Commodore 1351 mouse with this game?

  • Yes it is, but the problem is that you cannot move the crosslines/cursor to the buttons below. So you always had to press the keys 1-0 to activate a butten from the bar below. Nevertheless it was a master piece of programming having up to 50 (!) lemmings on the screen. There is a demo of a game called TRODDLERS which can be downloaded from gtw64DOTretro-netDOTde. I have absolutely no idea who they programmed this.

  • @hoques1432 I think he's using it in the video !

  • Sure, it doesn't look great, but getting this many lemmings on a C64, with scrolling, was quite difficult, believe it or not. I'm sure the developers had to use special tricks, such as having the levels rendered into an array of multicolour sprites, and I think the lemmings themselves were made up of 'softsprites', which were basically custom text characters in multicolour mode.

  • Really good game, i remember them doing a diary of this game in zzap64. Great game , great memorys.

  • It looks so crappy with lemmings wearing big F's on their heads :-)

  • Agreed! The music is outstanding! I wonder how many different tunes the C64 version had to offer.

  • Unfortunately not that many if I remember correctly. Maybe 3 or 4. I was disappointed about that a lot because the few tracks that it had were FANTASTIC.

  • @turican500 Lemmings on the 64 had 9 different ingame tunes by Jeroen Tel.

  • The music is bloody amazing for a C64!

  • technical its a very good version despite the limits of C64. Just a shape it released very late of the C64 lifetime.

Foreground was actuelly made by 7 multiplexed sprites (last sprite was for cursor), lemmings was made by characterset. That why lemmings is not bound by foreground tiles like many other ports when you set them to work and could have many lemmings on screens (even it slowdown a bit).

  • i didnt even know that there was an c64 version of this game

  • Admittedly, this version`s not great, but the worst 8-bit version is the NES one - the sprite flicker makes it almost unplayable.

  • I think the spectrum version is worst

  • Agreed, I just checked... I don't want to insult you, but was there any really good game on the spectrum? I think it was very very limited as far as graphics are concerned.

  • Well..Dizzy games are good. After all I must say that GBC version of Lemmings is even worse than Spectrum version.

  • The ATARI LYNX version was fantastic! I think it was the best version of all. The Lynx was the best handheld console at the time. Due to catastrophical marketing it did not have the success that it deserved.

  • Nah. The c64 version was seriously shit man. The bloody sega master system version shitted on this. There was a demo by a group called 'GP' that looked pretty decent though. Its only the first level as part of a longer scene demo, But still. Shows it can be done. I'll post the video as response to this.

  • Ahem, Master System max amount of lemmings on screen : 20 .. C64 : 100 !

    that GP demo had 7 lemmings + crosshair = 8 sprites !

technically the c64 versions is the best of all 8 bit versions as it has 100 lemmings none of the others have that

  • Are you sure about that? I remember counting once and there were 50 of them in one level, which is really amazing for this machine. It is very intersting when you compare all the 8-bit versions. The music is definitely best on the C64. The grafics on the NES & Sega Master System look better, I must admit. But 50 lemmings against 14 (NES) or 20 (SEGA) make up for, it I guess ;-D A fantastic job, especially on the C64, I didn't like the mandatory keyboard use though...

  • SHAME ON YOU!!! I guess you sold your machine too early then...

  • It was a Psygnosis game, not a Commodore game!

The C64 has the best music of the 8-bit formats, while the Spectrum has the best animation, CPC and Sam Coupe has the best graphics, its a mix. really, but still all great.

  • I'm surprised that the C64 version was released in 1994 since Commodore also provided us with the AMIGA original version of the game.

  • Shut your damn mouth.

  • Seriously, all the other versions have much better graphics. Compare this to the SNES version.

  • Snes is 16-bit and c64 is 8-bit.Try spectrum version.

  • Comment removed

  • NES is 8-bit as well, so check their graphics. PS I like the Lemmings games, I don't like the C64 graphics.

  • I know that nes is 8-bit.(I have played Lemmings on nes)I like lemmings games too,but I dont really care about graphics.Just music and gameplay.I like music in c64 version and I have seen worse lemmings versions too!

  • I don't lke the NES music that much, but the grafics are certainly better.

  • awesome music indeed, beats all pc-lemmings 100-0-

  • this is exactly the same as the pc version except pc's looks better and higher quality music

  • The C64 music always sounded 12Bit.

    This actually sounds Genesis-ish.

And the Lemming explosion looked like a camera flash.

I never got into Lemmings until I saw Part 1 of Gemini Dazzy's walkthrough for the PSX version.

  • I was surprised at how playable this version was. It sucks with a joystick because it's not precise enough to make quick selections, but with a mouse, it plays great!

  • Oh. So there were Lemmings for C64? I knew there were Lemmings for big computers like Atari ST, ZX Spectrum, Amiga 500, but C64? Cool!!

  • I hope you didn't seriously call the Spectrum a "big computer". The C64 version of Lemmings is a great conversion I think.

  • So you think the Spectrum is a "big computer" but the C64 ist not even a computer at all? I guess you probably consider a Game Boy a data center?!

  • great music , also graphics are pretty good for c64

  • DUDE.

Tailor Made for Blockers has AWESOME music compared to the other versions of this game! :O

  • i don't think the graphics are bad, it looks a lot better on a real C64. the music is awesome, Jeroen Tel rulez :) and this game supports the 1351 mouse, so it's not a pain in the ass, to control it.

  • well the controls weren't perfect! The different lemmings with the specific tools at the bottom had to be selected with the C64 keyboard. I liked the fact that you could press shift capslock to pause the game (this is the only game on the C64 that made a clever use of that special key!)

  • it came out on the amiga first didnt it

  • is thus an emulator or the real thing? If it is an emulator please send me a copy, but if it is on the real c 64 then send be all the full lengths of the music thank you.

  • I have all c64 tunes

  • aw so cute! Little moving blocks..

    But cool music.

  • 8 bit sounds better than it looks

  • great vid i really like this game but are do the lemmings take a bit long to do the action like they do in the gba verion in this?

  • Hmmm..This is my friend old console or not.Music sounds funny, but that door open sound in not very good.Oh well.Nice gameplay!

  • this is commodore 64 8-bit home computer from 1982 no console

  • But the music is delightful!

  • Oh god.... the graphics are awful.

  • Spectrum graphics sucks more

  • Why? There are less colors and a little less detail, but other than that, everything looks like it should.
