A basic lesson in high speed stalls here and one of the true obstacles these pilots face during their races. They fly on the very edge of a high speed stall and that is part of their own adrenaline rush as a pilot. When the winds are up, it's even more of a challenge but when you look at the history of the race, you see that they have an INCREDIBLE safety record...

Still, it's a sport and a competition and these pilots all knew eventually someone would crash...hence the quick rescue...

These guys built and flew their planes on a shoestring budget , laying out the shape of the fuselage using chalk on a concrete floor,and painted them with whatever color they painted the bathroom with that day. Those are my kind of guys, not these snot nosed college "boyz" of today with a silver spoon in their mouth!

High speed stall, nothing more. He simply yanked the yoke a bit too hard during that final turn and lost control, resulting in the belly flop into the water. You can see the pre-stall buffet on the wings in videos that show the onboard cam.

People 1) The pilot came away from it totally uninjured. 2) The rescue team in Australia showed that they are the best in the industry. 3) These planes are too small for ejection seats and as thay are modified prototypes. They are not registerable in ANY country as they do not meet aviation safety standards. If you fly in one of these, tear up your insurance. 4) What does god have to do with it? NOTHING

Its called an acceleration stall. You can see the slight quiver in his bank about a second before contact. Luck he was able to level it. Ive flown the Extra 300's. You are on the edge of an acceleration stall in most of those turns.
