Aside from her incomparable beautiful voice, Renee's acting is equally unsurpassed. She gives new poignancy and depth to the Marshallin's awareness of "time's winged chariot hurrying near." One of the most touching scenes in all of opera. I could see Renee doing classical drama in the legitimate theater!

the orchestra did not play over her but its just that her voice is not big enough. If you want to hear a real singer, then you need to listen to Joan Sutherland, Maria Callas, Leonytyne Price, Renate Tebaldi and Birgit Nilsson. They were the queens of the opera stage.
@Royalorgans You honest to god make some of the most idiotic, bigoted comments on all of youtube. You do nothing but go around praising your favorite singers, and belittling the abilities of others. Renee is one of the worlds leading soprano's for a reason; just because you don't like a singer doesn't mean you need to incessantly comment on videos talking about how much greater Joan Sutherland is than all others. Seriously, no one cares. If you like Joan then go listen to her.
@tenor220 you don't have to be so mean, I just stated a fact that there are better singers than Renee. Renee even said that She took advice from joan Sutherland.
Yeah! Wasn't she brilliant today??? I was lucky to see it in October too. Today was the better of the two for everybody!! Christine Schafer was 10 times better than Miah Persson. What a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
@mattyslipp - that's what we said! what a way to spend an afternoon! We saw in live in HD in Atlanta (champagne chilling in the car in the parking lot for intermissions)—saw it on a huge screen with great sound. Fleming and Graham were utter perfection, and de waart had the orchestra in tip top shape. A 10. Sheer bliss.
if you like Renee fleming, you would love Joan Sutherland. she is called LaStupenda and can take this role to higher heights which Renee can only dream to be. renee is good but not in the same class as Joan Sutherland and her friends such as Maria Callas, Renata Tebaldi, Birgit Nilsson, and Leontyne price. Oh, and if you want to hear a voice that is capable of singing this without compromise, then you should listen to Kiri Te Kanawa, Kathleen Battle and Monsterrat Cabelle.
@Royalorgans Sutherland did not have the voice type to sing the Marschallin. Neither does Battle, neither did Caballe. In fact, none of the singers you name were known for the Marschallin except Te Kanawa.
Agreed. There are 3 ladies that do this role justice (Fleming, Swartzkopf and Te Kanawa) not only singing but acting ability. Those ladies like Sutherland, Norman, Battle, ect. have the acting chops but the fff sounds they make are way to loud and strong for the Marshallin. Imagine the final trio with a Norman??? It would be more like a solo.
I like the idea but the voices dont suit the role. Strauss wrote this role for lyrics not dramatics like Sutherland. Tebaldi (I have to check this out) did do this role and she even had to tone down slightly. It would be like casting Stutzman or Anderson as Octavian. Good idea, wrong opera.
well I think Im not afraid anymore to say that I prefer R Fleming to E Schwarzkopf as the Marschallin, no matter how strange that sounds to my own ears
@LohengrinT Fleming is amazing as the Marschallin. But I still prefer Schwarzkopf's "Ja, ja" response to the Baron. Her voice captures the entire emotion of the opera with those two notes.
HA - I agree - it's SO lovely - resigned, a little world -weary, just almost spoken, resigned to let him go. I am so glad someone else never thinks anyone else does it QUITE right ! :)
Elle me semble parfaite pour Strauss, que penserait-il d'elle, je me demande...
