I am writing to you since I am looking for a cover photo of a deleted CD of Walter Gieseking, in which Gieseking is sitting in a stool by his piano wearing his typical hat. In this cover photo, he has his legs crossed and he is smiling. The cover photo shows him in full body.
I would be grateful if you could tell me about the label and catalogue number of the deleted CD.
Gieseking played this concerto in America - what turned out to be the last year of his life. I was fortunate enough to hear and see. Wonder whether anyone pirated a recording that year (1956)?
He recorded this before Horowitz. they asked him of all people can u believe it. And what a fine performance it is. Also his Chopin is some of the best judged and imaginative recorded. He is really unbelievable Scryabin,Medtner He played it all and could do it all. Does anyone know how tall he was. I think he was like Klemperer really tall! Not sure want to know!
a performance promoted or at least authorized by the Nazis. this little detail may either deduct or add. Mengelberg did not ive long enough but Gieseking had quite some troublke to restart his career after the war. He was booked in NYC in 1947 by Sol Hurok but upon arrival in a DC6.he was refused entry. Nazi past you know however misguided.
The London studios , halls , record co´s embraced him then , bless´em !
this is probably novice to ask, but I'm curious. I'm learning this song at the moment by myself, and I noticed that at the second measure, and there forth, of a tempo there are 9 notes in the one beat and then 8 notes in the next. C, C, G, E, E, A, G, C, E (respecting flats). the only thing I can guess is three eight note triplets without any markings or beam influence, and then 8 regular duple.
Lucky me! Was fortunate to hear this Master perform the R 2, and then the audience was blessed with two solo encores - Mendelssohn and Debussy! Out of the entire evening, I was most carried away with his Debussy. Regarding the Rachmaninoff, although Gieseking's chordal fortissimo playing was was just that - fortissimo - his tone was never strident, contrary to most pianists. Always has been one of my very favorite pianists.
Yes, Gieseking by the right it is considered not only the largest pianist of 20 centuries, and the great musician - the artist! Fine interpretation! Thanks, dear Filippeo, for remarkable record!
Thank you for sending, but I already posted exactly the same performance!
Also, the video description is not correct: there is also the Rachmaninoff Third Concerto with Gieseking/Barbirolli, which is much better than Gieseking/Mengelberg.
