Just 1 more story. It started to rain at a small apt bldg with a big covered porch. As I took my time gathering rain gear, 3 young guys who lived there arrived. I explained my purpose, they were very cool & asked some good Q's. We talked a bit & then I got back to doing the map spots. As I worked, they LIT UP A JOINT & started passing it around. Gotta admire the balls on those guys to fire one up in front of a (temporary) FED STOOGE. Wish I had gotten high with them--to make it a GREAT story.
p.s. My favorite question came on day 1 of door-to-door training. A mother was outside with her kids so I explained my purpose, got the map spot at her front door, thanked her & moved on. After finishing the block, as I walked past her house again, she stopped me to frantically ask "What is that thing in your hand??? DID YOU TAKE AN X-RAY PICTURE INSIDE OF MY HOUSE???!!!" Somehow, I refrained from laughing & assured her it was only a dot on a map of a relatively shitty GPS system.

I did that exact job. Using the handheld computer, we verified the street name, verified the number on your home/mailbox & then took a "map spot". That is ALL of the info on the HHC's. The purpose was to make it easier for future Census Takers to simply find the address of you PARANOID FREAKS who refused to fill out the questionaire.

This video is sooooo stupid. There is no punching in of coordinates. This was the address canvassing operation. . . where the Census Bureau verified addresses as actual housing units so the address list would be complete for where the Census forms should be mailed. GPS is used (even in cities) because it is required Nationwide. There are still rural areas where the homes can only be found by gps so all addresses are required to have a map spot. This worker was merely doing his job as trained.

This video is sooooo stupid. There is no punching in of coordinates. This was the address canvassing operation. . . where the Census Bureau verified addresses as actual housing units so the address list would be complete for where the Census forms should be mailed. GPS is used (even in cities) because it is required Nationwide. There are still rural areas where the homes can only be found by gps so all addresses are required to have a map spot. This worker was merely doing his job as trained.

This was for the Census workers working this year so they could be given accurate maps of blocks. By the way, the census will only come to your house if you didn't send back the form. Also, the GPS thing is no more. That was last year so employees this year could have accurate readings. Relax people...also, there is no way the government can have "actual proof" unless someone goes and "GPS's" the house from the exact location. Enough of your paranoia, the census began in 1790!! GPS mapping your house...whats the big deal? They can do that with satellites and get your long/lat coordinates anytime they want. In fact.. im pretty sure they already have them. Does this just make it a more efficient way of organizing all the info? yes it does. They tell the workers its to prove they visited the house, and didn't miss any on the list. is that true? Yes.. Is their more to it? Always. Its the government. Though, they dont even come if you do the 10 questions via mail.

For problem addresses, by the time I get there I've nearly all the data (and more) from public records but must still ask the questions.
At the end, remaining non-respondent information can be best-guessed, including data from public records, and the form will then have far more data than if the person had responded with only the # of people.
The maps generated from the GPS coordinates are enormously helpful in remote areas.

Why WOULDN'T he have a field computer? The postman carries one. My 8 year old niece knows how to text on a mobile. Have you ever done canvasing work? Using a handheld field computer is no different than carrying a clip board.

It must specifically be written in law for it to be required so where is the requirement that I have to provide the number of people in the home to the census? The census worker is validating addresses and collecting a gps of your home so that if you do not fill out your census form, someone can return to collect the data as required by law. What is the big deal. Census workers have been collecting data since 1790 and before they marked your home on a paper map. The census data is private and protected for 72 years. It is required to determine the house of reps and dole out federal funds to your community.
