  • I watched this when I was a child and I thought it was a movie. I think I'll watch this again!

  • Do not watch this newer one, it is shit, it totally changes the story, the events, and everything, it even changes the plot. It totally and utterly ruins Dune as if that could be possible.

This abominable piece of shit is but an insult to the great books, if you have any taste at all, or like the books, then do not endure this horrible piece of trash.

I watched the whole thing in hope of better special effects then in the original, and that was the only thing I got. Waste of my time. and yours

  • @INSANESUICIDE . . . it was truer to the book than the movie. .

  • The 1984 movie was atrocious. I just finished watching this and found it very good. Yes the effects and productions values were poor by todays standards but it was made in the late 90's and is very passable. Especially considering it was made for TV. I loved the book and think that the only possible way to fully do it justice is with a full TV series with high production values. Look at what was possible with Batttlestar Gallactica...

  • @samusdrake the movie was horribly unbearable.

  • Production value and acting wise, not as good as the film(Chani the exception), but the story is very faithful to the book and makes this a great watch.

Children of Dune is just as good.

  • I liked this version more than David Lynch’s version and it is actually more faithful, but it still was not perfect. What I liked the most was how they depicted the mystic of the Bene Gesserit and the mystery of Spacing Guilt. The acting was great so was the sets but the special effect left a lot to desire. Still is a most see. I miss when it used to be SciFi… not syfy!

  • Remember when the Sci-Fi (not SyFy) Channel actually attempted to make surprisingly faithful adaptations of classic SF novels? Instead of Ghost Crap and Wrestling?

  • They absolutely butchered the book in this miniseries. I literally couldn't get through the entire first movie on the sheer number of differences from the book.

I can understand small details, and skipping parts for the sake of movie time and keeping an audience - but full, important, involved details from the book were outright ignored or slaughtered to resemble some morbid abomination of the intended piece of work. Horrible.

If you appreciate the books don't even touch this garbage.

  • Someone doesnt feel liek the movie , i hope the remake of the movie apperently 2014 is anything like this series, movie and book, is perhaps slwo pased to some but entails so much feeling, intriuge, love, not liek this lets throw special effects at it and action, evne though the movie has it, it focusing more on the underlying

  • If this trailer is supposed to make me want to see the miniseries, it totally failed. I can tell much more of the book is involved, but it looks like shit, which just about anything on the Sci-Fy Channel does. It looks especially disappointing considering that the 1984 movie had more convincing special effects.

  • isnt there a 2012 movie coming out? i think i heard that somewhere idk

  • i just got done reading the book for the first time. I really enjoyed it. Word around the campfire is that this miniseries blows the old 1980's movie away. After seeing this clip I would agree. Same way I would agree that some cheap animation about a hobbit got it's ass kicked by peter jackson. I think I am going to skip renting this thing.....just go ahead and buy it.

  • The visual design look absolutely terrible. Cheap and ridiculous.

  • @profcash Maybe so, but keep a few things in mind: The series was made for tv, and tv shows don't often have a very big budget. This miniseries was also filmed in the 90's when special effects were very poor. And the most important thing to consider is that the miniseries does a better job of covering the complex dialogue and plot developments that make of the Dune story.

In my opinion it's the depth of storytelling that makes a film, not the flashy visual design.

  • @shahared1

I understand all that. But if it was purely plot based read the book. Film is a visual medium and therefore if the visuals are not up to scratch it detracts from the overall quality of the piece, to claim otherwise would be disingenuous. Even if it wasn't cheaply done, the style they have elected to go with is still hideous and in my opinion nothing like one would imagine it would be having read the book. To be fair the same must be said for Lynch's version with the Harkonnens.

  • @profcash I understand your argument, but I think anyone who wanted to read the book has already. In my opinion no film adaptation ever stands up to ones own imagination. That said, I think the miniseries is a great watch for someone who is not looking for a film adaptation but simply wants to enjoy a good sci-fi story. Compared to the other fare offered on cable tv I think there is enough substance to satisfy just such a person. And maybe a few will be intrigued enough to pick up the books.

  • Wow this show sucks, David Lynch made an awesome movie.

  • dune==oil++

  • i want one of those legendary bene gesserit blowjobs

  • zomg.

    desert powah.

  • The one thing many people like about Lynch's movie is the style he came up with for Dune. I like the military uniforms more than the ridiculous-looking outfits they all wear in the mini-series. Also gotta love Patrick Stewart on the spinning baliset (a Chapman stick, actually). Here, it's just a lute (no iPods in the future, huh?).

  • @Domkavosh

Yeah I'm surprised how low tech the year 10,191 is!

  • @Domkavosh=True. The miniseries made the Sardaukar look like deranged chefs. and the Emperor looks like a waiter at the Luxor in Las Vegas.

  • David Lynch's movie was horrible but the miniseries is the best representation of the series you can get other than the book or the audiobook. David Lynch's version wouldn't be so bad if he didn't straight make up crap and change the story. Although due to the scifi starved time it was released in people tend to think of it as fondly as Star wars. :p What them both and decide for yourself and do yourself a favor and read the book for the most enjoyment.

  • the soundtrack of the movie was amazing..........

  • movie was 1000 times better , the acting was better, it looked better

miniseries = bad acting, bad computer render, minedless adaptation

i mean look at the eperor and the Baron harkonen the look like comedians to me

the move was a lot better if you like good acting performance and have deeper understanding for the actual plot

if you are a teenager and like cheap action movies, this one is just perfect choice for you

  • series are laughable, the cinematics in Dune 2 (game) are much better in FX and acting !!! is cheesy but WAY better in any of those games.

    Costumes in mini-series are pathetic,..

Dune movie is way superior to this ... lol-stuff.

  • It was pretty good, but even though the Lynch film was less close to the book, in a subtle way it captured it's spirit well, perhaps better than the the minieseries.

  • I loved the miniseries ! I have it on DVD ( 2 disc ) !! I watch it over and over ! I wish it even longer !!

  • Paul is like Alexander the Great. The upstart emperor. He's even Greek. His family line comes from the royal house of Atreus

  • @vroulidia cept phillip did a lot of ground work before

  • dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik dik

  • Frank Herbert's "Doon". )))

  • @glynbrain in germany its called "der Wüstenplanet" is not much better.

    Dune is die Düne

  • @glynbrain As opposed to "Dyewn" which would be the British pronunciation.

  • @DevilMaster dyoooon! lol

  • agreed. the '84 movie was just horrible

  • @ezrameszaros i dont think so its a true classic like the hole bookseries of frank herbert. It was like the matrix of its times and yes the books are better true!

I liked the 2000 film too but Dune 84 made something all the new films cant its so fascinating good u watch it and watch it again and i dont get boring. Thats what a classic sci fi epos is for me. Frank herbert made the book against corruption he said and he did a pretty fine job with that. And all new updates never will do that.

  • @derblicker the 1984 version stood out to me for some reason. More than this one did.

  • @t260y I agaree,

  • @nothinghumanlovesfor Your comment reminded me that i need to buy the last Dune books written by Frank Herbert.

  • @t260y hahaha i am happy that i can be of help LOL

  • @ezrameszaros Th ending didn't make sense, lmao

  • @ezrameszaros

in what way IS it horrible ?

actors play better, personality's are beter, Freeman and the rest dont look like clowns, movie also is more packed and not smeared all over like 3-4 hours long where nothing happens with like infinite stupid dialogs without any meaning (to make it longer - got no money for action scenes).

ahh and last fight Paul vs Feyd - ohh ...in mini-series ..like worst "fight" ever. (cant say that was a fight at all ..) and in movie, it was great. etc.

  • Desert Power!!!!

  • The first movie introduced me to the books, the miniseries was good but too much importance on minor characters, especially Irulan, for me though neither can compare to Frank Herberts books. I find something new everytime I read them.

  • I agree with whoever said the sandworms = best part. Honestly; they gave me chills x.O;;

And well, miniseries sure as hell pwnd the movie, but let's remember that the book beats both by far ;D

  • the real triumph of this series was when they made the sandworms. they did a REALLY great job portraying just how huge those things were supposed to be. i was impressed.

  • good series and better than the movie, but the acting was kinda sub-par.

  • The only bad thing were some of the fight/battles

  • @Daetaur i agree. the battle sceneswere much better. more detailed in terms of what was being assaulted.

  • Wow this is by far, one of the best sci-fi mini-series since V. I have it on DVD and the effects, set design, acting, everything is great

  • @sroge445 enuf said and it's true tho all are master pieces in their own rights, the books are virtualy imfilmable

  • @sroge445 Well, I think I speak for all who have ever read/seen a movie 'bout a book/tv series 'bout a book, when I say; Well DUH!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Totally! I'm not usually a sci-fi fan, but this is one of my top favorites of any genre, TOTALLY EPIC!

  • @sroge445

how HIGH do you need to be to see this series ? Every time I try to watch it with straight face, I die from laughing. Realy should do some drugs before watching this ... to protect my mind.

Can watch Lynch's Dune easy, Its realy a Dune movie and not some ..Disco party for like 3 hours.

  • @sroge445 all the series needs is the soundtrack

  • @sroge445 books =10000000000000000 better than miniseries XD

    the movie isn't bad...(david lynch's dune)

  • @sroge445 my thoughts exactly

  • I cant find this movie anywhere help help help need to watch it all i have is children

  • This is my favorite science fiction series. I have read the books and really need to see the movie, etc.

  • God I loved this series. Almost perfect. Way better then the movie.

  • Thank you for saying that. Really! lol

  • oh sorry...could`nt agree with you less...the only thing the tv series had going for it were the CGI effects....and some nice looking girls!

  • Sorry, couldn't agree with you less. The movie was changed so much from the books to make an overhyped movie that failed in every way.

As a movie alone, it's alright. As a book adaption, the Lynch movie failed in all respects.

  • lol..ok...lets agree to disagree....i did`nt think the film was brilliant...just prefered it to the mini series....but i`m the first to admit...i`m no Dune expert.

  • Well said, although the minisiries also had a few problems in that area as well. There were just some things about Dune that are hard to translate to the screen, like how Paul wasn't a God, but simply the Kwizatz Haderach and that he and his mother merely utilized the Bene Gesserit missionary legends on Arrakis. Still, it was far more faithful than the Lynche movie.

  • Maybe I'm just projecting, but I thought the mini=series went to some trouble to show what paul was doing. His visions showed him possible trajectories of events around him, his training showed him how to chooce the path that best suited his ends. Which is why he seems so confident to those around him, especially at the final battle. He knows so much of how Harkonnen and Padishah Emperor might do, it's like he has the script. But that is not like being God. He's an awesome leader with edge.
