I did watch the series. But L's lies were all planned in function of resolving the Kira case.

If you notice, here he honestly says that he wanted Light to be Kira. At another part of the anime, when Aizawa wanted to leave the investigation, he had questioned L whether he was testing him by not telling him about the financial stuff. The others all said 'No way L would test you like it..', yet L admitted that indeed, he was testing him. It's this kind of honesty I'm talking about.
