I think he was showing them in reverse chronological order. Besides, it's not like The Beatles never used riffs and melodies from other songs.  I'm a huge Beatles fan and I can admit that they did copy from other artists at times--they even freely admitted to it. For example, the riff from "I Feel Fine" is almost the same as the riff of "Watch Your Step" by Bobby Parker.

Cord and note progressions are constantly being copied and updated by newer musicians. Even the mighty Beatles used previously recorded melodies and rhythms. Ever hear any old time Blues? there is an interesting radio show called "the ongoing history of rock" it shows a bunch of riffs clearly taken by bands from bands they listened to but also it shows examples of bands with the same riffs that could not have been aware of each other. it's a great installement but i don't remember what the epesode was called, they cover the nirvana, killing joke thing and conclude nirvana took the riff from killing joke, but cover many other examples,shocking how many there are

Interesting comparison. I am a music producer and I can tell you that with trained ears, you can know that these are all different. But what I can't say for certain is how much any of these bands knew about eachother's riffs. History says Kurt Cobain knew about the Killing Joke song. Personaly, I'm a big fan of both Nirvana and the Beatles. But other than the Killing Joke and Nirvana dispute, I don't know very much about the relationship between these different riffs and their players.
