Whaling in Japan or "scientific research" has nothing to do with capitalism. It is paid for by the government and has strong ties to Yakuza. Yakuza have been running it since the 70's, when it became illegal they found they could make more money by having the government subsidize them.

There's no hidden history, it's all well-documented. Google US Whaling if you doubt that. I personally don't care about whales but driving a popular commodity to near extinction seems shortsighted. Judge regulation by contemporary necessities.

We get called racist in Canada when we try to stop the whale hunt here because it's a Native Tradition, a tradition that recently was done with machine guns... part of me says that it's unlikely they traditionally hunted whales with machine guns. Now I don't give a shit personally but people should be able to critisize without it becoming about race. If you don't like whale hunting you just pick the closest target. They are doing a good job but they should be using bombs, guns etc. Or even better, drag those whale hunters off their ships and gut them on the spot, film it and broadcast that worldwide... Same for Canadian seal hunters. Save a seal, take that club from them, bash their heads in with their own clubs, skin them alive and leave them to rot, or leave them for the seals to feed on...

Some country I mentioned catches much more than the numbers regulated by the international whaling committee. According to my research, Japan is catching less than the numbers regulated by the commission. Also, the type of whales they can catch are limited but some people seems to think every whales in the world are endangered. Which is kind of hilarious.
