  • 0:49 - 0:50 sounds a bit like Titanic. But nice song. Nice playing to this song isn't my favorite but it's close

  • Wonderful song!

    Roli

  • great man!

  • Very well played, just sad that its not an original song of the Civil War or the 19th century but from the 20th century. Good song though.

  • Beautiful friend!!st 1VA

  • Very nice

  • I particularly enjoyed the wind hammering on the mic .. GOOD job

  • Wonderful. Thank You.

  • the setting perfect. the playing perfect. everything-perfect.

  • you should be doing this near a campfire when at night with the bugs going off, and the crackle of the fire, that would be amazing! Love this video too!

  • @Verdunkel1941 There's nothing like a harmonica to sooth the soul. It also reminds me of cattle drives at the end of the day, the cowboys would play the harmonicas in the still of the night around the campfire. They say the animals also were calmed by it.

  • beautiful! such a moving song

  • i love the song, wonderfull job! best harmonica version i have heard

  • Nice playing. but you do realize that it's not a Civil War song. Ungar composed it in 1983. Ken Burns, just used it on his Civil War series on PBS>

  • @Nomoreidsleft actually it was originally an old scottish folk song. But you're right- not a song that you would've heard during the civil war.

  • Someone else commented that they could just imagine sitting around a campsite and listening to you play this - and that's the same picture I saw as I listened to your arrangement. Very nice! I enjoyed your "Let It Be" tribute as well.

  • This is really beautiful.

  • @idrnoel Thank you.

  • Very nice

  • What key is that harmonica? Do you think I could play the song on a C?

  • @TheBackOfTheBoat It's a Lee Oskar Melody Maker in D, and I'm playing in second position. You can play it straight in C. I found tab on the web at harpinanawhinin (Sorry to be cryptic, but YT won't let you post a link in comments. And, this is not the tab I use). You would need a D to play along with most recordings, though. Thanks for watching, and sorry to have missed your comment when you posted.

  • @tjm3 Yeah I think I found that same tab while searching around on google. I've tried playing it a few times and it sounds pretty good- not as good as your version though. Thanks for the advice. I think I'll stick with my C Marine Band for now because it's good for beginners, but I hope to eventually start playing in other keys.

  • Beautiful !

  • Great tune and very well played! I can just picture camping there and hearing you play, I would have to break out my fiddle and join in!! That tune is just perfect for the out-doors.

  • @Southernjuggalo63 good for them

  • @Southernjuggalo63 ya still lost how is that skewed?

  • @Southernjuggalo63 By the power vested in me, I pronounce you deleted and blocked. Your racist bullshit has nothing to do with me or my my music, and is not welcome here. Peddle it someplace else.

  • @tjm3 amen

  • This song actually wasn't period. It was used in the ken burns documentary but i believe it was either written for it or otherwise a modern song.

    Good job though!

  • @drewfustehfox

That's right. It was based on an old Scottish tune, but Ashokan Farewell wasn't actually written until the 1980s.

  • very nice my friend

  • @Tyetheberious Thank you!

  • make it simple, and you'll mae it sound good!, althroght i liked the end effects! ;) 3 stars!

  • Sigh ... beautiful.

  • @JiaJinKwan Thanks!

  • bravo, really nice. I love the Lee Oscar Melody makers for playing some of the standards, but I haven't heard it used on a song from this era. Really pretty.

  • @verycooltone Thanks! I had Desperado posted too, but it got pulled by YT for copyright violoation. (They still have over 1100 other covers of the song, so they missed a few).

  • Oustanding !

  • @ErnstBecker Thanks!

  • Really nice playing with some beautiful

    tone.

    Thanks,

    Dave

  • Thanks! I enjoyed the stuff on your channel, too. I've hardly played my chromatics; I'll have to get them out sometime.

  • Masterful rendition of a great song.

  • Thanks, Herb. Good meeting you last night.

  • I used to play an arrangement of this song on guitar with harmonia and you made me want to take it out and try it again (smily face goes here!)

  • Just Beautiful!!!!

  • Thanks!

  • Excellent. I am learning the harmonica at the moment, what key of harmonica are you using.

    Many thanks Harry

  • Hi Harry,

It's a Lee Oskar Melody Maker, key of D. The tuning is quite a bit differrent from a standard 10-hole, and the song is not playable on a standard tuned harp. You might be able to play it on a 12 or 14 hole Hohner, I'm not sure. Google lee oskar harmonica and you wil find all the tuning info.

    Thanks for watching!

  • hello from canada, we watched a civil war movie in u.s history class when I was 16. I heard this song played in the movie and I never forgot it. It is the most powerful and sad song I think ive ever heard.

  • I also find it a piece of music that really sticks with me. Thanks for watching!

  • =O i wanna try this on my dad's harmonica XD

  • It is very good! But i'm sorry to tell you that Ashokan Farewell was writen in 1983...

  • Outstanding

  • Thank you.

  • lovely playing tjm 3, i love this tune.

  • Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!

  • Could not think of a better alternative. Simply beautiful.

  • Thanks for the kind words!

  • Pretty ! I love this tune .Good job
