You would still need the CDL, just because of the GVWR and the air brakes. Being "not for hire" would exempt you from the whole log book thing and the apportioned plates deal.........but you'd still need a CDL.
@TheGervarod CDL = Commercial Drivers License. Any vehicle over a certain weight/length requires this license when used for a business purpose. It's hard to say if you need a CDL when you have an old truck like this one that is used for fun and no business. Guess it depends on the police officer that pulls you over.
@MegaZsolti By the size of the radiator (small one) and the sound, it tells me that this is a B-81 with a Mack Thermodyne Diesel in it. The wider radaitor model usually had a larger Cummings in it and is noted as a B-87. I used to drive a '65 B-81 with a 18 speed Quadraplex in her & air start. Years ago I bought a Mack book that tell ya what model and the number produced. Very interesting.
holy shit they had a truck exactly like this in Maximum Overdrive in a chase scene. its an old stephen king flick in which all electronic devices go crazy and has a huge emphasis on semitrucks. I love the green goblin head truck in that movie its an old Western Star i believe.
thats a B81 thermodyne diesl mate my grand father just sold on it had one of the only shaggin waggins on the back beautifull old girl we left her in the shed for month it the lever she cranked right up we even had the original dolly and lowloader with old girl tovery sad to see herr fo but we didnt user her as we got a scania143H 450hp V8 118tons
I hate to bust your bubble juanitocaritos77, but this is either a B-81 which came with a Mack engine or B-87 which came with a Cummins engine. One way you can tell is by the radator. If it were a V8, the radator would be noticable much larger (wider) to help cool the V8. Back in the 60's I drove both. The B-81's were replaced by the R-700 series trucks.

Do you need a CDL to drive something like this?
chromehound 1 year ago
@chromehound Depends on your state, how you title it, who pulls you over. CDL leaves no room for error.

Correction...
I said "The B-81's were replaced by the R-700 series trucks". It should read "The B-81's were replaced by the R-800 series trucks"
