I have a Dean Evo (Les Paul-style guitar) that gets this great Les Paul tone. I swapped out the pickups for Seymour Duncan Seth Lovers, and now it seriously-sounds better than the new US-made Gibsons (and with better sustain). Mine has a flame-top, which I think looks better than the quilted top. Also, the Evo's set-neck design sustains extremely-well, and Dean used Honduras mahogany for the body (with a solid flame-maple-top). These are a steal for someone who can't afford a US-made Gibson.
@gangtwanger So how much is that Dean Evo les paul? Also, how much did that set of pickups cost together? I'll get it and be happy with it lol, Im drying for that orange guitar
I love when Knopfler plays his Les Paul Standard. That's such a sweet-sounding guitar (Saw him play that same one many times going back to the mid '80's). Nothing like the sound of an old piece of mahogany.

@markonlinux Not to mention a greater emphasis on phrasing and composition rather than speed and technical mastery. I've ben playing for 2 years and can go faster than Gilmour or Knopfler, but could never write something like this.
....Absolutely Brilliant Observation. I had not connected the two before, but Yes I agree. Both styles grasp hard on the throat while the meaning hits deep in the gut of one's emotions.
@markonlinux Mate, I've been think that exact same thing lately. I'm looking for other bands that were able to set such a powerful mood throughout their songs. Floyd and Dire Straits manged to create an atmosphere within their music and I'm hard pressed to find others of such calabre, it's something that's extremely difficult to do, especially for guitar based bands.
I'm also glad to see you agknowledged one of my favourite guitarist that we have recently lost, Gary Moore.
@markonlinux DG WRITES (????) songs?????? Plays a mean guitar to them - yes, but writes songs??? - music and lyrics is all RW, according to DG himself !!!!
In songs like "Calling Elvis", "Sultans of Swing", "Lady Writer", or "The Man's too Strong", Mark Knopfler shows his incredible technique and relaxed skill. However, this song is different. This song demonstrates his ability to portray strong, strong emotion, purely through his guitar. Beautiful Song.
@SlappaDeBassMon He puts feeling and emotion into every song! Listen to Tunnel of Love, close your eyes, if you don't imagine your at a fairground then your not feeling the emotion of the the song. The man's too strong is about a mercenary soldier, the melody lends itself to a very macho image. If your not getting it, then your better off listening to shite pop songs.
@oldfart4751 I did oversimplify, I apologise if it got to you. I know he puts emotion into all his songs, but I guess what i meant to say is that he sacrifices technical skill for pure emotion in this song, especially in the solo. Because i learnt this song on guitar, and it is actually not that hard, really, But at the same time, I could never play this song as well as Mark. He is just so connected to it.
And also, I will never go back to shite pop songs lol i gave up on them years ago.
There was a far better live version from about the same time, but the friggin video police pulled it. I love the way videos are pulled for copyright infringement but then the recording companies don't release them anywhere else, even for sale.
the best, the only one, forever Mark Knopfler ♥♥♥

In songs like "Calling Elvis", "Sultans of Swing", "Lady Writer", or "The Man's too Strong", Mark Knopfler shows his incredible technique and relaxed skill. However, this song is different. This song demonstrates his ability to portray strong, strong emotion, purely through his guitar. Beautiful Song.
SlappaDeBassMon 1 year ago
@SlappaDeBassMon He puts feeling and emotion into every song! Listen to Tunnel of Love, close your eyes, if you don't imagine your at a fairground then your not feeling the emotion of the the song. The man's too strong is about a mercenary soldier, the melody lends itself to a very macho image. If your not getting it, then your better off listening to shite pop songs.
oldfart4751 1 year ago

This is the stuff other legends like Clapton and Gilmour watch and go Oh My God, That Is Incredible. Don't take my word... ask them!
