  • I wish GM would bring the 3.8 liter back. I learned to drive in an '84 Olds (FWD 3800), my first car was a '81 Cutlass (RWD 3.8L carbureted) and my current car is a '05 Impala LS (3800 Series II). My other favorite motor is the LT1 in my Roadmaster wagon.

  • were is the firebird???

  • I would love to pull up there with my 1999 Buick LeSabre 3800 series 2.

  • i just bought a olds 88 1998 with 65000 love it took it to get oil changed and he said it was like a brand new engine

  • I find it weird that not a single F-Body was featured in this video.

  • stupid ? is a 2000 pontiac bonniville a W-body?

  • I've been driving my Del Sol recently. Great gas saver. But fuck it, tomorrow I'm takin my GS out. My baby yearns to be driven!

  • The white one at 2:34 said PEACE OUT

  • i love my 99 gp >:D takes all my abuse.

  • my buddie has a 08 jetta thought it was fast till i took the grand prix for a rip lmao...

  • my moms 2001 buick lesabre has 264,000 miles on it still running perfect just the trans is starting to go and the engine is staying strong 3800 series 2 FTW

  • is the 3800 II a push rod engine? I know the 3.4 DOHC is a over head cam

  • @xtreme01hac10docter Yes, 3.8 rules!!!!!1 Pushrod, and it it kills so many dohc v6s v8s i4s!

  • @Motorfordtoyota

These engines are complete torque MONSTERS and I love it.

  • @wildman00sax I know, they are amazing, and they take so much effort to kill, they are SUCH amazing engines.

  • @xtreme01hac10docter yes. and it's design dates to 1962.

  • check my impala 3800 hundred brand new engine and modded

  • @footballwilbur yup, easily modified and hard to kill

  • 2:48 one of my favorite car sounds period, next to a good 350 and the zr1 and the z06, and just below it the 3.1!

  • Caint kill a GM 3.8! LONG LIVE GM 3.8S!

  • you left the 3800 camaro and firebird out! show us RWD 3800 people some love!

  • dont get me wrong, i love the 3800 and its a true bulletproof engine, But my lt1 with 1k under the hood will smoke any 3800, supercharged or not. V8 is the way to go. But the true thing in this video is wut the fuck happened to rwd burnouts? I fucking laugh when seeing kids with FWD cars burnout... next thing u know u'll be mexican and driving a civic.

  • I have a 96 Bonnie SSEi Supercharged. Just under 40K original miles. I've considered upgrading to make it a tad faster... Not that its not fast already. But a lot of me just wants to keep it original. You all have me wondering about this plastic intake thing tho. Hafta look it up now.

  • These Series II's are good, but the 4T65-E that they're paired to after 1997 are known to have terrible harsh shifting problems. Either the transmission valve body passages wear out because of the harder check balls, or the Pressure Control Solenoid goes bad. Either way, it gives you TERRIBLE harsh shifts after the tranny warms up...

  • These engines are okay, I have one in my 1998 Camaro, but the damn gaskets suck so bad, either the heads or the intake gaskets blew only 2 months after they were replaced, this sucks..

  • the intake manifold is a chronic problem on all of these 3800's because of the fact that GM used a cheap plastic intake manifold. The EGR tube runs up through it and it melts the gasket/manifold... I'm pretty sure you can replace the plastic one with an older Series I metal manifold.

  • Aren't your referring to the plenum? I've read those distort from the EGR heat and the lower intake manifold gasket can also blow out or um, in and dump into the cylinders and crankcase. ( GM idiots)

I recently saw a revised aftermarket plenum for less than 150.00? that supposedly doesn't distort.

Not sure who has the best manifold gasket.

  • Yes, correct, the plenum. I've heard that Fel-Pro makes the best design for these lower and upper intake manifold gaskets... The price isn't too bad, either. $38 or so for each upper or lower set... I've also read that it's a good idea to get a new throttle body gasket and fuel injector o-rings as the throttle body and fuel rail need to be removed to get the job done...

  • Yeah, I can't see doing this without upgrading to the L26 aluminum, which is around $80.00+ itself. plastic is a little cheaper, but than there's the modifications etc. I haven't been into motors for awhile because of no place to work or tools. Even though my fathers barn has all I need.

So many games for a car I paid too much for ( $8,000 in 07) and $2,000 since. Insurance wouldn't even give me back my parts investments in a total. :(

What a whinner eh? Could be worse.

  • @NTL1991

This happened to mine last month. My 3800 only has 57k miles on it but the ERG tube burned through the manifold. My mechanic put a smaller diameter ERG tube in so that there was a space between the manifold and the tube. Other than that and a failed oil pressure sensor the engine has been 100% reliable. It is a great engine, unfortunately I don't have the supercharged version so it is a little lacking in power.

  • @MrPizzaman09

I just bought a supercharger and I'm fixing to do a top-end swap.

Look around for parts. You can get them for cheap.

  • 5 stars terryK! slowmontecarlo even makes an appearence in there, gotta love that!

  • proud owner of a 98 gtp

  • i fliped my car and the hood and battrie went flying and the moter and trans are still good love the 3800

  • Great video. Best car I have ever owned and still have. Buick Regal GS.

  • yeah, i read about those problems. It's quite common. I never had trouble with it, though.

  • replace that POS plastic intake with a aluminum unit, that will make it more durable. plastic intakes suck

  • I had an Olds Intrigue with the L36 engine, and although they don't make as much power as other v6's nowadays, they were the most reliable engine gm ever made. Mine took a beating :)

  • until the plastic intake fails. shame on GM for using plast engine parts, what the hell were they thinking. the 3800 was a very reliable engine until they used this intake. my landlords 3800 let go at 133K when the intake failed. 133k is NOTHING.

  • Regal Gran Sport

  • to "Z34teen" as for the 3800 being heavy its not. This was one of GM's good points with this motor they were able to make an iron block and iron head engine as light as they could so the end result was an engine that only weghed a little more than the 60 degree V6's.

  • like the part with the gs regal smokin the 5.0 mustang

  • 3800 FTW. i got the SC3800 on my Olds LSS

  • Sweet vid. I have a '99 Grand Prix with the N/A 3.8L. I'm "fixing it" to my liking.

  • HELL YEA the best engine GM ever maid. I got a 96 bonneville SSEI. Its got 100K miles on it and it still runs 14.7 in the quarter. the series 2 supercharged are awsome they always have power when you need it.

  • the Buick 3800 is a good engine, but it's not the best. It's heavy, outdated and doesn't produce enough power to justify it's displacement. My sister has a 3.8L S/C GTP so I know how they are. I'll stick to my under-rated LQ1 3.4L DOHC 24 valve V6 though. Design-wise, the LQ1 has 10 times more potential than the Buick 3800. A Buick 3.8 needs a supercharger to beat an LQ1 despite being a larger engine and having (slightly) more torque. These aren't opinions, just stating facts.

  • just so you know the LQ1 was about as bad as you can get. The LQ1 is just GM's way of making a cheap DOHC V6. its just a regular 3.4L with DOHC heads onit. it still has the cam and everything in there. (its not a cam anymore but just a shaft that runs the oil pump. you also still have the holes to put your lifters and everything. There is a reason why nobody makes after market parts for the LQ1 it was a failed design. it only lasted 6 years to the Buicks 3.8's twenty plus years.

  • It only lasted 6 years due to horrible maintenance reviews. People have no patience anymore. Granted the LQ1 had a pushrod block because GM was working with what they had available in 1990. It went from a 130HP 3.1L pushrod V6 to a 210HP DOHC 24 valve 3.4L monster. It would've been more if it wasn't detuned for the transmissions (possibly 281HP). I'm saying the LQ1 has more untapped potential then the 3.8L, which requires external balancing so it doesn't puke it's guts everywhere.

  • The LQ1 does have an external harmonic balancer. the drive pully that goes on the crank has a counter weight on the other side of it. The 3800 does not need its internal harmonic balancer GM only put it there to make the engine idle smoother.

I don't like the LQ1 because its power band is so high up in RPM range. its also not as broad as the 3800. Not to mention the LQ1 sucks on gas mileage. I know becuase I had a 92 GTP. I now have a 96 Bonneville SSEI.

  • @workensmart not to mention the LQ1 is just pathetic hard to work on.

  • Funny that you say this as HOTROD mag inquired about the 3.4 DOHC to GM engineers and HR said all the engineers could do was shake their head and walk away, and as for the"potential" of the 3800 check 3800prodotcom, running low 8s on a factory block, something your 3.4 cannot do.

  • @workensmart yes, GM realized the LQ1 was a failure, and everyone pretty much knew the L36 3800 would be a slam dunk as its replacement in the high end monte carlos and luminas in 98.

  • @gmdude91 I agree. And stock for stock the Lq1 is about the same as a L36 but the L36 gets great gas mileage. I raced a two door 98 GT when I had my 92 GTP and we were about tied but the 98 GT still won.

  • @workensmart oh and guess what engine filled in in the olds intrigue while cadillac was finishing up work on the shortstar 3.5 (which i like alot more than the 3.4)....sure enough the good old L36. oh and to add insult to injury on the whole LQ1 alternator deal, guess what the highest positioned and easiest to reach belt accessory is on the 3800? sure enough, the alternator.

  • @gmdude91 what about the coil packs on the LN3, L27, L36 and L67? you forgot about them being right in front of you. The only advantage the Lq1 has over the 3800 is that it can rev higher, big deal LOL.

  • @workensmart if only the RWD L36s were as easy to deal with as the FWD ones are. i got a 97 camaro. just did spark plugs recently (pain in the ass, but not near as bad as the LQ1), plus the engine is kind of pushed back under the hood, as are the coils. drips a bit of oil out of the rear main, but im really not worried about it (seals are a problem on RWD models). this 3800 has done whatever ive asked of it and then some, very dependable.

  • @gmdude91 yea same hear my 96 Bonneville SSEI has been very good to me I just needed to put new brake lines in last year and tune up and thats all I had to do to the car. its got 110,000 miles on it but it runs like a bat out of hell all the while getting in the very high 20's on the high way. great car I love it, its got every opion but 8 way leather seats and adjustable air suspension. But I hate leather and I don't want air suspension the car handles very well as it is.

  • As for the 3.4L making 280 HP well GM always does that with its proto types. the 3800 serise 2 supercharged was supposed to make over 300 HP. and the 90 Turbo Grand Prix was supposed to make over 270 HP. GM has this stupid rule that all of there cars from any division can't be quicker than the Corvette.

  • @Z34teen i like the shortstar 3.5 out of the intrigue better than the 3.4. its DOHC and what not, but also much easier to work on, and is timed with a chain rather than a belt.

  • @gmdude91 I'll give the shortstar credit where it's due. It's a good engine and relatively reliable. However, a timing chain as opposed to a cogged timing belt (a la LQ1) puts more mechanical drag on the motor, limiting output somewhat. I still stick to the LQ1 having more untapped potential than the 3800. LQ1 versus the Shortstar though. close. I still think the LQ1 has more potential.

  • @Z34teen it does have more untapped potential than the 3800. of course, GM couldnt come up with a good enough transmission for it. i love GM to death but even as a fan of them you gotta admit most of their trannies are garbage (save for the turbo 350 and 400, and they purchase most of their manuals from aisin or tremec, but thats for a whole other day). as for the LQ1 timing belt thing, at least theyre not as hard to deal with in cutlass supreme as in the round body montes and luminas.

  • Got my 98GP GT, Love that thing, 110,000 miles and still taking down eclipses. Things a BEAST, Nothing better than the look on a ricers face when you smoke them light to light!

  • Headers. intake, exhaust. Chip. Throttle body. Cam. rockers, lifters.

  • they are great motors

  • Nice vid...Love my 3800 series II with 161,000 miles. Runs flawless. It's a shame that GM did away with it last year as it was by far their most reliable motor.

  • @bc1271 i wouldnt say its their most reliable motor ever (4.3 tops my list on that) but it has to be in at least the top 5.

  • I've my 3800. :)

  • where are the bonnevilles? still though love my 03 SSEi , the 3800 buick is an engine touched by GOD!

  • can someone help me make my 3800 firebird like theese cars lol

  • BIG INTAKE : )

  • anyone know who's car that is at 1:15? im curious what kinda setup that is. I love the sound

  • The BEST engine ever made. Between my parents, brother, and I we all owned Pontiacs with 3800 Series engines. The three bonnevilles we had all had over 200,000 miles when we upgraded to newer models. Most reliabe vehicles money can buy!

  • need some 3800 camaros in this :/

  • the 3800 is also hard to kill.

  • @ZackMcLeish13 caint kill a 3.8! Ha!

  • This engine is the best thing about the Grand Prix. Overall I like that car, but I don't like FWD and I don't like the feel of the handling much, but the engine is awesome.

  • Damn it, there was no sexy lumina there! The 98 LTZ was the only ones that got the l36, and god damn, my dad's got one O.o fast as hell!

  • @Firen81 yeah id love to have an LTZ L36. i think many more LTZs wouldve been sold had they all had the L36 rather than that LQ1. doing maintenance on an LQ1 is an absolute nightmare.

  • great video!!! i like it, i like it a lot. 3800 is a great engine even though replacing the intake manifold gasket is practically maintance. but i know that i love my L36

  • nothing like the gm 3800 ;)

  • to take advantage of the rushing air as the air intake is on that side...free ram air effect if u will ;)

  • i probably will get my dads 98 olds 88 for my first car and its stills runs new with 225000 miles on it :)

  • The GM (Buick) 3800 series,; the best V6 engine in the world. I love that sound!

  • Don't forget about the L32 3800 Series III!

  • i got a 99 bonne wit 190k and the motor is strong and quite. i love the 3800 motor

  • Three Days Grace - Animal I Have Become (Album: One-X)

  • Okay that was really surreal how this video has the same song I was listening to in WinAmp.

  • oh buddy rightat the last second u threw the impala in. missed out on all the chevys man this is more like buick and pontiac tribute.

  • REGAL OWNAGE!

  • it was 1995

  • I own a 2003 pontiac bonneville SSEi and regularly hand "suped up" imports ther ass the only one that gave me any trouble was a wrx from a rolling start i took him, from a dead stop i stayed with him of the line after 50mph he took me. the wrx was not stock, that says alot for a "luxury car" that weighs nearly 2 tons! 3800 series II SUPERCHARGED luxury with attitude! also smoked a couple of 5.0 and 4.6 stangs. whos your daddy? thats right boys and girls GM!

  • Great video, what is this song??

  • When did the Series II begin production?

  • Introduced in 1995, was upgrade in most GM cars from Series I to II from 1995-1997 all 3.8s after 97 were Series II, amazing engine, my 1996 Bonneville had one, 0 problems, always started, my new 97 LeSabre has one, 205 HP/230 tq un-SCed stock from factory in a V6 is sweet. 3800 S2 FTW!

  • 1995

  • i miss my 3800 :(

sold it with 178k miles and it was still going strong

  • 3800's are extremely sturdy LOVE EM! I have a 589HP Turbo/Supered 3800 in an 86 Pontiac Fiero.

  • Damn. I have an 89hp 4-cylinder in mine.

With a bigger cam, so maybe it's 95 now. :)

That car with any 3800 must fly, but with a supercharger it must be insane.

  • I plan on doin' the same in my. Got a 2000 Monte Carlo SS not SCed.

  • Sweet. Ive got a 3800 sc swap in my 2000 grand am gt intake, headers, exhaust, cam, 3" pulley, 150 shot. 12.70 et baby

  • damn nice, can't tell u how many cars i've beat with my stock engine. 2000 bonnie

  • i have a 3.8l fbody

wish i had a gtp. SC 3800 ftw great vid!

  • Gotta love the 3800 Series II! Great engine, and this is coming from a Ford guy

  • I've had a lot of the 9C3 Police 3.8 Luminas. Just wondering if anyone has swapped a supercharger out of a buick 3.8 and fitted the the Lumina. Be a nice sleeper since the 9C3 has better handling than the rest of them. Cool vid.

  • great video!

Thanks for putting that together. 3800s all the way!

  • I own a '93 LeSabre with the 3800 Series I, it's never let me down. Fantastic engine.

  • I have a 90 olds 98 177,500 miles never has it used a drop of oil,and it as still running with a bad cam magnet cam button and cam sensor got it fixed now,you would never know it has over 177 on it!

  • My LeSabre is now sitting in a field waiting to be fixed up, although even after a year of sitting she still starts up and runs like when I parked her =)

  • sweet!

  • Nice video Terry.

I was gonna be pissed if I didnt see at least 1 vid of mine, but...there was :)

    When you making another!

  • cool,

Im in the 1,2 sence :^)

  • I love the 3800 Series II Supercharged... it makes my Buick Ultra go fast! lol
