No you can run it whitout the patch in windows 7 also because I did it. The patch is still in beta but not many bugs left,the patch have directx 9 full and 3d sound chanels better sound 32 chanels, better ai, many fixes, mpi, also bee able to have music and movies whitout the cd, I recommend the patch very high. if you whant the link for the patch I can give you it.
