ESA recently signed an agreement with Russia to develop a new spaceship system, similar to NASA's CEV. It will probably be based on Souyz, but be bigger and be modular. First manned flight is expected for 2018. The ATV is impressive but I think it would have been better with a reusable system, but this is a nice first step for Europe.
ariane 5 = 90% d'ingineering du CNES (he oui on le répète pas assez, l'esa aime pas en entendre parler dans les médias mais la plupart des contributeurs européen ont fuit ariane 5 a la base il voulait tous un truc pour chez eux ...)
ATV = astrium (EADS) bon ok la c'est un peu plus européen que ariane 5 en engineering ... mais bon astrium la france est l'un des majoritaires
I don't know why the ESA don't build his spaces shuttles for this misson. because the ATS wil be destroyed on the atmospher. The space Shuttle not. and such ESA won't wonder at NASA for fix Colombus or an other.

when the American shuttle will not fly any more or from very soon (2011) there will not be more than the vessel progress to motorize SIMPLE PERCENTAGES and make him take back altitude, ATV replaces therefore well the American shuttle

I know EADS work for a touristic space shuttle.
